Many people post that it's a mystery as to how the neutral drain works, usually in the context of installing the neutral drain transmission repair kit. This POD posted 13 Nov 2022, patent dated 14 Feb 1984, should explain how it works.
What I don't understand is why the neutral drain on my 33 year old DD sometimes works, sometimes not. I'm surprised the coupler hasn't ripped apart by now. Often the machine will spin with a tub full of water after the wash cycle completes, but the rinse cycle will have a neutral drain. For whatever reason, I've been hesitant in installing the neutral drain kit. Both for my current bad health I'm not up to the challenge , but also I'm thinking it might be easier to just install a replacement transmission, as my current original transmission makes a loud clicking sound with a full load of clothes. But there's also been a lot of talk of how the replacement transmissions (3360629) aren't good and may fail after a few months of service. PartsDR sells what's described as a "new GENUINE Whirlpool replacement part" for approx. $160. Is it FSP? |

I personally wouldn't install a new kit or transmission. I think its nice having a machine that also runs the self clean cycle every time you do a load.
The coupler will not fail as the machine's clutch slips protecting the motor and drive train from excessive drag. I've been able to hold a DD tub stationary with 4 fingers while the machine was put into spin. There is a lot of slip, it shouldn't be an issue. |
