Early 806

Has the wire wound baffles. If I'm reading the tag right, I think it's DZ, making it 1967.

Yes DZ. Would be a great match to my ‘69 avocado 806.

I'm always amazed at how the Maytag HOH drum finish always look perfect, even after all these years. On all the HOH dryers I have seen. That drum finish was indestructible.

Porcelain enamel drum coding

Maytag dryers up until and including HOH dryers used porcelain enamel on the drums. It was a very durable finish for a dryer probably overkill.

Many other brands use porcelain Westinghouse from 1964 through 1989, GE dryers used porcelain from 1957 into the 90s, and the 57 through 61 Lady Kenmores actually had a porcelain drum.

It certainly looked nice and Wore well but didn’t make any difference in performance. so overall, it was probably a waste of energy to do it when you consider how much extra energy cost to fire on porcelain enamel.

John.

If you have ever had the opportunity to see a Highlander HOH dryer, you would have had an opportunity to see a Maytag dryer with a galvanized steel drum. With enough use, the zinc would wear off the steel drum. The finish wore off my aunt's Maytag Highlander dryer drum. These were BOL or close to it in the late 50s and possibly into the early 60s.

This dryer must be the galvanized drum model.

Wouldn’t it be possible to paint those Highlander galvanized drums or not? Currently in Arizona for the week and plan on going to the appliance junkyard sometime tomorrow or Thursday, might take a drum off of one of the Highlander drums and might try to see if it’s even possible to use some sort of appliance epoxy to paint the drum what, think a Maytag HOH with a white drum would look nice.

Electrostatic powder coating would probably be a good finish to apply to these galvanized drums.

I wouldn't bother playing around with a galvanized drum when Maytags porcelain coated drums were the gold standard. If you want to perform durability tests with various coatings, that would be a fun experiment.

Galvanized dryer drums

I would agree with Dan. It’s not worth the effort, it’s very hard to paint over galvanize metal and have the paint stick. There are special products that allow you to do it but they’re pretty chemical laden primers.

I use some of these years ago to paint, galvanize, rain, gutters, and things on my house so that you could actually have paint stick to the galvanized metal and it worked but I don’t think I’d want that stuff inside my dryer.

Plus the galvanized drum as it is it’s just fine if you want to restore an older dryer with one, just use it as it is.

So I went to the appliance junkyard today, didn’t end up getting any of the galvanized drums off of the highlander dryers and ended up just getting one of the porcelain drums instead. Going to post about my Maytag HOH parts hoard when I get home to California tomorrow and will go back to hoard EVEN MORE HOH parts when I go back to Arizona later this month or earlier next year.
