So it would be easy for the user to see the cycles printed on the outside rim of the control knob. Even though there are three option buttons on this machine, the cycles are selected from the dial that is turned to one of 4 different points before the machine is locked and actuated. IMO these Maytags were/are great (but loud) dishwashers.
I think a lot of dishwashers like GE's were designed this way.
