This was my friend's Panasonic up at his cabin that I took back in 2017 since I didn't know at the time if they were ever going to later sell the place or not. But I actually had a chance to return back down there this year, however it got replaced with an LG. Kind of a shame because I was very curious to see what the model was as I have a fascination with Japanese microwaves, particularly Panasonic and Sharp. And I thought this was a cool looking one when I first saw it back in 2006 I believe or no earlier than 2005. Anyways, would anyone happen to know what model this Inverter was? I'm pretty sure it was original when the place was built back in 2004. The picture is kind of blurry but it does say that it was 1250 watts.

Modern microwave ovens

Sharp has never been a particularly reliable brand of microwave oven always seem to have more problems than most.

The inverter idea was also kind of a bomb. Most companies have gone back to non-inverter microwaves. Whirlpool tried the inverter ones that we were working on and they had a lot of problems. I’m not surprised the Panasonic has been replaced at your friends cabin.

John.

Excellent Microwave!

That Panasonic looks exactly like the one we bought new in 2008.  It's still going strong at a friend's house 14 years later (we moved to a place with an OTR nuker).  I loved that Panasonic for its ease of use.  The cylindrical knob in the center of the panel can be used to set cook time instead of punching in numbers, then just hit Start.  This crank-and-go option is what sold me, but the other feature I used -- perhaps even more -- was the Sensor Reheat.  Place the item in the oven, close the door and hit the Sensor Reheat button.  That's all.  It reheated perfectly better than 90% of the time.  The labeling wore off of that button from so much use!

I have four microwave ovens here. One is a relatively small Danby, which lives in the patio kitchen. Another, the oldest, is a Sears Kenmore, in the main kitchen. Also in the main kitchen is a Panasonic Inverter NA-6515. I have another Panasonic Inverter, new in box, which I haven't yet put into use. Three microwaves being OK, four is sort of a crowd.

I did have  fifth one, another Panasonic Inverter. I returned that to Costco not because of inverter issues, but because it had a door latch issue; I had to slam the door in order for it to start. I got tired of that, found the box, and returned it for a full refund, although the refund amount was less that I expected. Perhaps (since I didn't have the receipt) they gave me the discounted price of one I bought later there. It was also one that I had brought into my last jobsite (2019).  I suspect it was mis-used by somebody at the jobsite while I wasn't present. But it certainly could have been a mfg issue, IDK.

I don't think I've ever fired up the one still in box. As I recall it was discounted at Costco; perhaps too many returns due to operational issues? IDK. I remember the price was very good.

Like I say, the Panasonic in the main kitchen works great, has for some years now. One of these days I'll unpack the "new" Panasonic (it's in my workshop now) and see if it works OK.

And so it goes. Microwave ovens are great... when they work.

That's good to know that Panasonic is still selling the same design today, just like some of their vacuum cleaners which were their better models. So that microwave is also probably one of their better models as well. And it seems like Ralph here agrees. I just looked at what the model my friend's LG is and it's a LMC2075ST which they're still selling today so it must've gotten replaced just recently. I think for a microwave that lasted over 15 years is not bad actually. I now wonder what really happened with the Panasonic and why my friend decided to replace it? I'll have to ask but I'm going to assume that it probably died.

John, actually my grandfather has a Sharp Carousel R-410DK from July of 2000 at his house and it's still alive today as I just went up there for Thanksgiving a few weeks ago. It has now outlived the microwave that was there before the Sharp which I think was an Amana because I remember seeing the electronic clock display being red on the old one and I also think it was original to the house when it was built back in 1982. To me, I think that's impressive for a modern microwave. And who knows, it may even outlive my grandfather when his time comes. But to be fair, he does spend almost half of the time at his cabin. Speaking of which, I think the microwave that disappointed me was his over the range Frigidaire at his cabin. It was put in when the cabin was built back in 2004 just like my friend's cabin but it died in 2011 and it couldn't get fixed according to what the service technician told my grandfather. So we replaced it with a Whirlpool that he still has today. So not only his Sharp outlived his Frigidaire but also our Sharp that we had from our last cabin, my great aunt's Sharp, and even my friend's Panasonic as well.

I also did some more digging and this appears to be a NN-SD967S. Although I could possibly be wrong because I do notice by looking at these pictures here, the Inverter logo looks different from the one that I took a picture of from the cabin. Assuming my friend's is an older one probably.

OK, after reading all this stuff in this thread, and also doing a fairly thorough Google search on door latch issues (the only problem I've ever had with a Panasonic microwave), I'm probably fixing to move the box with the brand new (that is, never used) Panasonic NN-SN797S inverter microwave from the storage area (really a half bath) into the workshop so I can plug it in and confirm that it actually works.

I'll let you know how that turns out.

Probably I'll use it to pop some popcorn. Waste not want not.

Alex,

Maybe a bit off topic, but I had to chime in regarding the Sharp Carousel.
We have a Carousel II that was a freebie from my in-laws.
It's an R-5H82...circa July 1991.
It has needed one repair, and I don't remember what it was. But, it's still a daily driver!

Barry

P.S.
The washer in your profile/avatar might just be my dream daily driver washer!
Minus the rust. (No offense)

I may be a Panasonic nut and all but honestly, I think I like Sharp's microwaves better than Panasonic's. We had a stainless steel Sharp Carousel R-508HS up at our last cabin we bought after the place was built and that was my all time favorite microwave! I loved the looks of it, the sounds it made when it ran or when you push the buttons or hear the end cycle chime, and it seemed to do a great job. I wish we took it back home with us when we sold the place, I would've gladly replaced one of our black Amanas with that Sharp.

And none taken. But luckily the rust can be removed and repainted. I think I'm going to have someone rebuild the Kenmore washer for me when I get back from my grandfather's, not the same grandfather with that Sharp R-410DK. Speaking of my other grandfather, he once had a vintage Kenmore microwave from the 80's. I don't know what model it was or who made it for Sears but I do know that it looked just like this one. I thought that was a pretty impressive microwave because it lasted for a very long time, sadly it blew up a few years ago according to my grandfather. I think he liked it better than his over the range Maytag.

Just heated a cup of water in the supposed "new" Panasonic in the workshop.

Turns out it's not a new one. The mfg date on the back says "March 2002". The model is NN-S762BF. 1300 watts. Which doesn't match the box it was in. No manual in the box, either. Must be in the house somewhere. Or maybe it got left at my last job site.

Anyway, it did just fine heating the cup of water, so it's a keeper. I know it's one of mine because I stuck little plastic labels (probably Brother P-Touch) on each selection to make them more readable in the kitchen.

Oh, and for the one I returned to Costco... I found some very nice videos on-line about how to fix the door latch issue. Turns out the problem is that the metal bracket holding the door latch assembly is too thin, so it can bend over time and stop holding the door shut. Not too hard to fix with either wire or zip ties, but it does involve taking the outer case off and some careful work. Too late for the one I returned, but ... if it happens to the one I still have in the kitchen I'll know what to do.

The Kenmore is a Sanyo

paulg's profile picture
That Kenmore / Sanyo is a great microwave. Had one years ago. A neighbor threw it away. Pulled it into the garage for a quick check. Shorted magnetron.
Replaced magnetron with a new generic replacement. Gave it to my mother who used it at work for a good number of years. There were many employees so it got commercial use. After she brought it home I cleaned it up and gave it to a friend.
That was over 20 years ago and he is still using the oven.

That's cool that the Kenmore was made by Sanyo! I always thought their microwaves were cool looking as well.

Yesterday I took these photos of the Panasonic Inverters that are used at a local church building. First one looked smaller compare to my friend's and it uses 1300 watts instead of 1250. And the other one, the inside of the frame looks square instead of round like my friend's. Still thought it was fascinating to see anyways.
