These were pretty machines, but we’re kind of the beginning of the end for top load. Washer quality.

Probably one of the first US machines that put a lid lock on because they were too cheap to put a brake in the machine to stop the tub.

It’s too bad. Westinghouse spent so much money making these top load washers, but never sold particularly well, it didn’t work as well as GE whirlpool, Kenmore, Frigidaire may tag, etc.

Like many other Westinghouse appliances such as their dishwashers repair record of these top load washers was just awful.

It’s too bad they didn’t put more money into redesigning their front load washers. It would’ve worked out better I think for them.

John.

Only experience with top load Westinghouse was in a laundrymat that my mom used when the Norge went down. Thought they washed well and relatively quiet machines. It was a nice laundrymat!!! Had family that owned a set for many years. I liked the 70’s consoles.
Westinghouse’s strength was in the front load. I agree with your statement John. Pear Bailey thought so!! 😂

There was a Westinghouse dealer in the next town-over into the 1970s.  I knew two local people who had SpaceMates sets but no one with a stand-alone frontloader or a toploader.  I bought a 1977 LA495PX in May 2010 from a now-deceased collector.

looks like the ad is from around 1967? I have a 1975 with blue ramp agitator, but motor needs repair or replacement. In 1982,a new Laundromat opened with a row of westys featuring(as I recall) black agitators.

Often the more prettier and laden with such fancy gadgets as the two big knobs, one for the timer and another doing another function a smaller knob or maybe a set of buttons could do, the more trouble-prone in this case topping the least reliable of washers...

Despite the era of underdogs that these were in, thanks to attractive consoles and pretty panels such as these were actually doing good, but try to find one even scrapped away today...
