I'm looking for a new dish washer for my mom. She wants something basic, preferably with a food grinder in stead of a filter (or is a non-filter DW even possible any more?) because it's hard for her to reach inside to remove the filter for cleaning. I was looking at the following GE, but any other suggestions welcome.

Dave, have you looked through the Use & Care Manual? Go look at page 18. There is a graphic that clearly states there are 2 filters A former member who is an expert on dishwashers, bought a GE after they came out with this design that had filters at the botom of the tub and still featured the dishwasher had the Pirranah food grinder. Andrew told me that the grinder is pretty much a marketing ploy. That the openings in the circulation system are so small that very few particles actually got to that grinder, that most all debris got caught by the filters.

Thanks appnut. Yes I did see the filter, but was hoping that maybe it would need less cleaning if it had the food grinder. Sounds like maybe that's not the case though from what you are saying. I'm wondering if there ARE any dishwashers without a filter any more???

On a humorous/disgusting side note, my sister got a new Bosch dishwasher about a year ago and I warned her about the filter. She kept insisting that hers didn't have a filter. I was visiting her a couple of months ago and looked inside. Sure enough, it was just like my Bosch. I pulled the filter out and it was absolutely packed with sludge. If we hadn't already eaten, I'm not sure I would have used her dishes! Now she knows...

If it's only your mother, perhaps a compact counter top dishwasher.
It sounds like maybe she's having issues bending and stooping.
With the dw at counter height she'd be able to see everything better.
At about $250 it will be less than any undercounter model.

That’s a great idea the countertop variety if she doesn’t have a lot of dishes. I got a used 2005 Whirlpool Powerclean portable for 100$ in mint condition, I recommend looking in the used department for something that’s been taken care of in great shape if she doesn’t want a countertop variety. We were lucky enough to find a 2020 Maytag built in for my parents place that had the old wash system with a food chopper plus a few filter strainers under the lower wash arm to collect bigger chunks of debri from getting into the chopper assembly, those were very good dishwashers the Maytags from 2015-2020. I think Whirlpool learned their lesson from when they didn’t add additional filter strainers in the point voyager dishwashers and they were so notorious for their chopper assembly’s getting clogged with gunk. Anyways, For a brand new machine, I just don’t think they make anything without a filter but with a food chopper best thing you could do if want something brand new is get whatever you’d like and assist with cleaning it for her once a month depending on the machines usage if that’s possible, I cannot think of anything that doesn’t have a manual filter that’s on the cheap side. Let us know what you decide! And happy dishwashing!!

If you’re looking for a dishwasher today that doesn’t have a filter you need to clean on a periodic basis, you’re limited to a few models. On the low end is the Frigidaire line, with their big plastic self cleaning filter disk on the floor of the tub. They also have a soft food grinder.
Next is the KitchenAid line with the MicroClean powered filter system. These models have the 3rd rack with spin tubes and have model numbers with 404, 604, 704, and 804.
The only other option, is to look at the Maytag line. They have the same powered Micro Clean system that KA has, but with less design features.

Thanks guys for the countertop suggestions, but my mom can make quite a few dishes and runs her dishwasher every couple of days. I'm pretty sure she will want a full sized one.

Thanks johnb300m for the models without a filter. The local appliance place has one of the Frigidaires on display according to their website, so we'll check that one out.

In the worst case, as someone mentioned above, I can clean out a filter for her every week or two. She rinses her dishes really well before putting them in. I checked out a youtube video of the filter on the GE and it looks simpler to remove/install than my Bosch because the whole screen doesn't come out with the filter. She could probably change it ok, but it's just awkward with the door in the way.

Using pods?

Using liquid or powder instead of pods may reduce some of the build up on the filter. The plastic film is supposed to dissolve. I wish I would have bookmarked the video that showed how the film which turns into a gooey substance collected in the filter--I believe it was a Bosch dishwasher. The filter reminded me of a cheese grater with the cheese still stuck to it. I have been watching a lot of them since that is a top pick when I go to replace the one I have now. Some say the pod dissolvable plastic is not good for the pump.

My old dishwasher has a blade in it to chop up larger stuff, so I honestly haven't noticed any issues with the pump or ciruculation pump when I took it apart recently to repair. I've used both powder and pods in it over the last ten years.

Some of the new ones don't have this chopper in it. The pods are convenient and sometimes seem to work better since ingredients are kept separated until ready to use.

Hmmm. I kind of think it makes since since I know the gooey material from the washer machine pods can get stuck to clothing--I only used Tide hygienic pods for certain loads and now not at all for that reason (I buy the liquid). Yes, I use hot and warm water as required.

After seeing what I think I remember as a Bosch dishwasher (it's the brand I am looking to buy now), I compromise now LOL. The Finish tabs seem to work well after I could not longer get Cascade Boil out for a reasonable price. I cut the plastic wrap off the Finish tab and place one in the main compartment and use a liquid or powder dishwashing detergent in the prewash container. Because older people often have arthritis and other issue with fine motor skills, I don't recommend telling them to cut the wrap off. She might want to consider using a quality detergent in powder or liquid form to see if that helps.

Just because it says it's safe doesn't mean it is. There have been a lot of issues with so-called flushable kitty litter. It's one of those areas, I won't debate with anyone. I just plan on leaning toward caution.

I should clarify this..

I am using Finish tabs (pressed powder). They now have a plastic wrap designed to dissolve instead of the foil pouch. I do cut that and peel it off before using. You can't really safely cut the plastic wrap off the Finish Quantum without risking coming in contact with the contents--those pods have three or four separate compartments. That is why I just say maybe try switching to a quality detergent in liquid or powder form to see if that helps.

Taking the time to scrape the dishes a little better may help too.

My old mum used to have a Miele dishwasher it had a filter but as she was unable to get to it she also rinsed things well before loading and in the years she had it when I visited I would refill the salt and check the filters and they never needed cleaning. She always used finish products and we sold the machine with the house it could still be going it was a super DW.

If people are pre-rinsing religiously, there should be no need to clean the filter. After all what debris would be in there? Maybe she could even get away with using half of a tablet for a full load.

What nobody seems to talk about is adjusting the amount of detergent according to the soil level of the dishes. While we find it totally normal to do that with laundry, it doesn't seem to come across people's minds to do that with dirty dishes. I use tablets in my dishwasher but often add a little powder because I don't pre-rinse much. I always have clean dishes and a clean dishwasher too.

Maytag has the best

I purchased the Maytag MDB8959SKZ with three racks. The model here has two racks and saves some money. No filters to clean. Works great.

yes that Maytag....I LOVE the Maytag dishwashers out of all the ones I've seen. I hear Bosch is good too...Maytag has been low or no stock though at a lot of places for a while...

Still.. I actually wouldn't mind having a removable filter to clean periodically.... I mean, isn't that better than having to take the racks out, and wash tower completely off in the event that something gets stuck in the chopper

Self cleaning filtering

awooff's profile picture
30+ yo post reverse rack maytag (free on marketplace 5 years ago) - pic below is how clean the filter was after 5 years of use and no prerinsing.

Was really expecting a mess as never could see how the old maytag design of the self cleaning filter could actually spray itself clean but seeing is believing! other then a few poppy seeds it was clean!
