Seeing Eugene's load motivated me to try and see how much the 1980 BD Kenmore Dual-Action could REALLY handle. Well, surprisingly, I raised the water level and there was rollover, but it's definitely not something I'd do again as I want effective circulation, not to mention a working machine, LOL. This particular load consisted of:

5 pairs of jeans
15 T-shirts
6 pairs of boxers

Here you see it loaded into the machine.

Seems we have a double-picture issue here

Interesting! Here's a wash shot, with the tricked water level.

Another wash shot, taken from above. Yes, there is turnover!

Slow-speed spin. I used the Permanent Press cycle for this load.

Did I mention it DRIED them too?

You know it's winter when you can do this...:)

Steam-dried towels are simply amazing.

I'll have to try that "dump truck" full load in my Kn DA machine.Looks like enough clothes in there to fill a dump truck!-And circulates them!

Good load there Austin, glad you got the rollover...the GE combo looks such a beast, is it noisy when drying??

The Europhiles at this point are busy "Concentrating On Their Breathing" ....I (will own this one) wouldnt have the nerve to wash those beautiful light t-shirts and such with jeans....LOL

Enjoy , Mike

Holy cow, Austin! That's a huge load! Love the pretty colors in frame 171509. I'm not surprised you had rollover when you increased the water level. Those KM's are workhorses.

I'm going to make a video of 2 loads today and I'll put them up on YouTube. The first load is thirty-some bar mops (blue-striped white towels of approximately 14" x 19").

The second load will be denim. I have only three pairs of jeans (much larger than yours, though), but I also have several heavy denim chef's aprons (the kind that cover your whole front), so I'll toss in those and maybe my heavyweight sweat pants. I'm betting I won't get rollover, but I want to find out.

Off to work!

I doesn't look too crowded Austin, at least you can clearly see the pools of water.

Go Kenmo', it sure does the job. Interesting to see how many items can be put into this machine.

Austihn, that's definitely a BobLoad. You get a certified sticker. But I"m like Mike, I wouldn't dare put those nice t-shirts with those jeans. But then again, I'm a super picky sorter!!!

Of course you did raise the water level higher than the normal limit, but as Robert said, there are pools of water visible, room for circulation, parts of the auger are visible in both agiation shots, and the clothes clearly aren't >>crammed<< in.

Austin, I think your machines can handle a bit larger load than what I've seen you typically run. :-)

mixed loads

I must condem your mixed load although my understanding may be wrong so please feel free to correct me. A mixed load with towels and jeans to me would have resulted in a 40degree wash or warm water as I don't think jeans could stand any higher water temp. I don't own a pair of jeans so I can not say for sure however if this is the case then the towels and cleaning rags would not have been cleaned at 40 degrees. Especially ones that may have had some degree of solvent e.g. bathroom cleaner on them. Therefore mixed washes are not good unless towels and whites ogether things that can stand 60 or 90 degree heats!

cbosh, Austin does not have a hot water heater in the laundry studio at this time. All washes are cold water.

My mother would have slapped you silly if you tried this in her RCA Whirlpool.

Bob

I've been really busy with work and being on dialup I kinda stay away from pics.

Question????

Austin,
Why do you use the Permanent Press cycle for jeans? I know the BD Kenmores spin at about 525rpms on the Regular cycle which is slow going by today's standards. Just curious.

Post# 172156 , Reply# 21   12/4/2006 at 12:30 (6,323 days old) by washertalk ()

The combo is a rare machine for sure.

Mixing colors, you are just the typical trouble seeking teenager. Even I never lived that dangerously.

I like your almond belt drive Kenmore. I have to admit with all the machines I have had I have never had a almond Kenmore BELT drive. I've had a top. I have had a almond Whirlpools. I've had Almond Whirlpool/kenmore dryers. Hmmm. I'm a bit envious.

Ah yes, the slight altering of this here or that there. I remember those day. I get the raising of the water level thing. It is easy enough to do by holding the knob between 2 levels or adjusting the set screw.
However, and it has been a while since I have taken one of these apart and I'm sure someone else may know more.
The first thought that comes to mind is that you probably don't want to fill the tub above the heigth of the spin tube. Even though there is, or should be a rubber gasket between the spin tube and agitator shaft. It may leak water down between the spin tube and agitator shaft and cause a number of problems.

Have fun

Um yeah Jason, he got it like a week or so ago from the curb. There is a post on it.
Work, you've been working? Is that supposed to fly as an excuse? Dial-up speed? Ok, that is believable. Well let that slide for you.

Mixing colors

Hi Erik,

I did a large mixed load only for the sake of doing a BobLoad®. Glenn knows that I generally underload the machines because of my sorting. When I do "normal" laundry, I separate the darks, lights, bedsheets, etc. If I have a lot of jeans, I do an all-jeans load separate from the "soft darks". Since it was cold water, I didn't have a color-bleeding problem. Then again, I've never had anything bleed on any mixed load I've done down there.

Filling above the spin tube and agitator shaft will not harm the machine. If you remove the agitator from a direct-drive Kenmore, you will see that the agitate shaft and spin tube are much lower than where the water level normally rises. The same goes with some belt-drives; Jason's Frankenmore and my 24" for example. The spin tubes on those are fairly low in the tub, while the agitate shaft of course is normal length.

Hi Jason, I rescued this Kenmore from the curb last month. Here's the original thread about that machine.

I mix dark and light colors all the time..

...and I am no teenager. LOL

In my experience if you use a detergent made for colors you don't get the bleeding. I use the Perma-Press cycle that uses warm water and have had no problems with bleeding or fading.

I'll even put a scoop of Oxi-Clean in they are especially dirty and don't have the bleeding or fading.

Dialupalousas

Yes, I live in a remote part of town with no DSL or cable. The only high-speed I can get is at work and they don't know about my washer thang yet so, I gotta keep it on the down low.

Austin, great machine!

I hate dial up... I had it for umpteen years and then in 2003 i got teed off at ATT and switched and never looked back.. Now if the verizon wireless lap top cards wheren't so much

The Sprint cards are 'posed to be better than Suckular, I mean, Cingular Edge cards. But U GOTTA sign a 2-year slave agreement with them to own one. I guess I'll wait until the Cable company decides to run digital cable to our part of town. DSL is a no-go. Too far away from the CO. Satellite sucks becuase if you download a certain amount in a month, they cut you off.
