Hi group! I’m been considering finding a Frigidaire Jet Cone washer. I was looking for one some years ago, but was discouraged by being told that we are getting into a generation that can’t repair them, if service is needed and parts are even harder to find. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Daniel, they still show up occasionally it would be helpful to know what year machines you’re looking for also, where are you live? Transportation costs can be substantial if the machines very far away.

John.

Looking for a Frigidaire Jet Cone Washer

I would like a Jet Cone washer from the 1970's, but I would consider one as far as 1962.

You need to find out where the local appliance stores are taking their hauled-off machines for disposal and keep a steady eye out.
From a distance pastel colors are earlier machines, gold, green and copper tones later ones. ESTATE sales are still a good way to unearth them, although sometimes you need to ask what's in the basement or outbuildings. Sometimes the people selling aren't even thinking anyone would want an old machine covered with dust and droppings somewhere.

When I started collecting in the early 2000's they were everywhere, although the parts weren't always available. The BOL machines were the most numerous. As long as the water-bellows was still intact you had a pretty good chance of breathing life into them. If the pumps were shot on some of the solid-tub machines, you could always just floor drain the machine.

Rollermatics with solid-tubs debuted late 1964 into 1965.
Early 1970's saw the 1-18's debut and Frigidaire was sold 1980.

Good luck with your search!

rollermatics once very common

despite the shortish production span,~1964.5 through '69, 3-4 rollermatics could usually be found behind the appliance shop 1976-77,and plenty at the dump 1982-83:enough that i was able to fill a 5-gallon bucket with transmission rollers salvaged from the junked rollermatics :)

And John, my apologies for not finishing giving the answer to your question! I'm from North Carolina.

Go to your local appliance dealers, and make friends with the delivery people. Take them some donuts, and tell them you are looking for older Frigidaire washers, and are willing to pay for them. Keep in touch regularly, you might be surprised what comes in.

The 1-18 machine...

...was basicly a larger capacity "jetcone" washer with perforated basket and the "Rollermatic "mechanism is belt driven at about 1:1 ratio instead direct drive of the rollermatic. In my area at least, the 1-18 was nowhere near as common as the rollermatics-at least in the alleys and at the dump-none found at the dump in '82,but i was given a working 1974 one that year :) GM 1-18 was made 1970-79,then 1-18 was made a couple more years as a rebadged Westinghouse agitator washer of about 12-14 lb capacity instead of 18 lb of the real thing.

Back around 1965 we lived in a flat in SF. The landlord lived upstairs, we lived downstairs. There was a Frigidaire Jet Cone washer in the first floor garage area. It was explained to me by the landlord that his wife didn't like it, so he "donated" it to the other tenant(s).

I found it interesting to use, but it had its issues. Mainly, it would make a terrible tangle out of clothing, wrapping shirt arms and pant legs together. And turn sheets into ropes. Other than that, it was fine ;-).

Ahh the infamous "rope maker" washers. IIRC only early Westinghouse front loaders received same moniker.

IIRC with Frigidaire many claimed if loaded correctly tangling and rope making were reduced. www.automaticwasher.org/c...

A family I knew had a Frigidaire clamshell washer with the Jetcone agitator, at least that’s what I saw about a twenty-year-old one thrown out, and one young family member drove a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado and worked at a gas station so he was the one handy at fixing things so his family got a lot of life out of it and maybe the matching dryer…

And they dressed neatly enough that I certainly would never have guessed their clothes to have been washed in such a rough machine or had some method to avoid the tangling—and surely it was equipped with a gentle, delicate cycle for what little I got a glimpse of what one gal family was wearing, I don’t think she took any time to just wash by hand and either line dry or use the low heat in the dryer…

Loaded properly, the Jet Action washers with the cone-shaped agitator did not tangle much of anything if the user followed the four quadrants diagram printed on the underside of the lid. I used one as my daily driver for years and washed king-sized sheets and a load of dress shirts each week without tangling.

The clamshell Customm Imperial must have had the Three Ring Agitator changed out at some point. Frigidaire-equipped laundromats had the three ring agitators replaced which reduced the capacity of the machines, especially for large things like throw rugs which we took to coin-ops. After that we switched to places that had large capacity front loaders.
