I’ve had a KitchenAid KDI-18 in my kitchen since I bought my house about 4 years ago. It’s worked flawlessly, but I’ve been looking to get a quieter model, since the kitchen is open to the living and dining rooms.

I found a mid-range Thermador for sale on FB Marketplace- Couple didn’t like that it wouldn’t dry plastics, and wanted to get rid of it. Leaving the door open at the end of the cycle helps, but it’s not like the new ones with Zeolite.

It has a built-in water softener, which was a huge perk for me. The old KA had a hard time with glassware due to the extremely hard water in my neighborhood. Having a water softener, and a rinse aid dispenser has made a significant difference with cups and mugs.

I ordered a few parts for it- mainly a cutlery basket and top-mounted clips, since I have laminate counters. The side screws that were previously used aren’t my preferred method to secure the DW in the cabinet.

Installing it wasn’t too bad. The old dishwasher had a hard copper line from under the sink, was direct-wired with armorflex cable, and had a very thick drain hose that was difficult to pull through the cabinet. These Bosch/Thermador units have a water leak system that will shut off the inlet, and have a remote water valve that connects under the sink. I had to find a 1/2” to 3/8” compression adapter, since I didn’t want to swap the water valve on the wall, and my local plumbing shops didn’t have 1/2” compression to MHT supply lines. I added a surface mount outlet and junction box to capture the wire, and was able to plug it in. The drain hose was an easy swap.

I’m still kicking around ideas for what to do with the KA. I’d almost like to keep it for a canning dishwasher, since the internal water heater and heated fan dry will dry literally anything (including plastic Tupperware, something that I miss a bit with the Thermador).

For now, it’s on a furniture dolly in the corner of my garage.

What have other folks done with their old DW’s, when they still work?
