Does anyone know which model of Maytag is based on the original design? It seems that some models are copies of earlier brands (Magic Chef etc). I'm not sure where the Atlantis evolved and which models are based on the original Maytag design.

The original design that Maytag earned it's reputation on is called "Dependable Care". But I think they are phasing out the design. You may also find it under the "Performa" label, which used to be the Norge/magic chef washers that is the basis for the Atlantis line. Honestly, as a repair tech, I would stay away from Maytag laundry; although I'm not sure how the Neptune top load washer is doing. My advice is to go with Whirlpool/Kenmore for a top load traditional washer.

I enquired about the Dependable Care (LAV) at an appliance shop recently. I was told that, although there are some in stock, Maytag has taken this machine out of their product line. They have some financial trouble, so they ditch the bulletproof design that made the company what it is...nice goin', Maytag.

Part of the problem is that their "bulletproof" Dependable Care design had taken a nose dive as well. Center seals were a problem in these machines too, I've seen too many with bad seals leaking water and/or oil all over. One I have in the garage now is leaking water, and rather steadily, from the main center seal and is only a 97 model. Machine looks perfect otherwise...

spiralactivator, Maytag is still producing the LAV model. I still sell a ton of them. I try to steer folks away from the cheap Performa-style & Atlantis. The new SAV models are built off the Amana line and seem ok, but they seem to have a seal problem right now.

Maytag Dependable Care

 I bought a Maytag in 95 (LAT) series,first year of the white face, and it is a fabulous machine, simple yet large capacity, a real workhorse, with a few bells and whistles. Recently, I replaced the belts on my mother's Maytag she bought in 1970 and got a chance to look at the mechanics of that machine when I took off the front panel.(turns out it was not necessary to even do that) Curious when i got home, I took the front panel off and found the EXACT SAME mechanics, except a bigger tub and a bleach dispenser hose to the pump of my 95 model. Maytag took a wrong turn- the dependable care design was what made them famous, but perhaps they did not get a good volume of repeat business since people died of old age before they ever had to replace their Maytag, as my mother has. The dependable care was hands down the easiest washer to repair, if you ever had to. It never went off balance and stood the test of torture when we 4 became teenagers and would wash one item for a date. I am just wondering whom I should will my 95 one to when I go?

Regrettably I have to agree, the new junk is junk, but if you put the gemline aftermarket seal kit in the new depenable care line , you get a longer lasting machine
