New To Me - Haier HLP21N

It ain't first of May, but someone was moving house!

Walking home on a beautiful night spied usual tell tale signs of someone having moved house; appliances out for rubbish collection.

Nothing terribly interesting caught my eye at first, just a Bissel stick vac. Then spied a little Haier washer. Unusually hoses were attached and power cord not clipped.

At first was just going to take inlet hose (can never have too many), then saw how light and rather puny unit was and, oh well; when the cat's away this mouse will play.

Hailed a taxi, chucked thing into back (it was an SUV) so here I am with this:

Got her indoors and figured since next day was rubbish day if thing didn't work out it would go.

Plugged unit in and all proper lights came on. Poured kettle of water in tub; no leaks, so far so good. Poured another kettle full of water into machine and set it to "drain", which it did.

Today after wiping thing down with disinfectant (well you never know where things have been do you?) rolled it up to sink, connected hoses and did a maiden clean out wash. Unit worked perfectly. My hunch was correct then, someone was moving house and just binned things they no longer needed.

First real was was two pairs of jeans on "Normal". Am not totally keen on impeller washers of this sort, but have to say the Haier did manage decent roll over which always gets points in my book.

Came time for spinning after main wash and trouble began. Unit would do short spins, stop, start to spin again, stop.. Finally stopped and began flashing lights.

Figured at once load was unbalanced so opened up washer and took jeans out. Sure enough they were a tangled mess and that as causing unbalanced load. Untangled, put things back in, lowered lid and machine completed spin and rest of cycle (rinse, final spin) without issue.

All and all things seemed to come out clean. Will no more after things are dry; they're on clothes horse now so won't be until later.

Minor things; unit won't wash, rinse or spin with lid open. Fill or drain yes, but otherwise it just sits there beeping until lid is shut.

No lint filter. Not really a huge issue as bunged a few of those Asian net things recommended by another member.

Will hang onto unit for a few weeks before deciding to perhaps move it on to someone in need.

Checkrate/Likes 3 That's a fun curb-find. I had one like this, passed on from Robert. It did a great job on what it was able to wash. I don't love the impeller-top-load-washing method so much either, but if it's one's only option.. I didn't dig into the proposed new regs too far, but it seems as though these compact and sub-compact washers are getting some scrutiny from DOE now. Rightfully so, the amount of water and energy adds up pretty fast for their diminutive size. It did a terrible job on comforters ;-) View Full Size

Checkrate/Likes Spent good part of yesterday putting this little machine though its paces. Actually cleans and rinses quite well. Did a load of microfiber dusting cloths that were rather grimy and they came out quite clean. Heavy soil option gives about 26 minute wash which is fine for shifting dirt (what one used for microfiber dust rags), but as with all impeller washers longer time means more tangles. Not so much an issue with smaller items like those microfiber dust cloths, but wouldn't do shirts or such that way. Wasn't paying close attention but seems "Heavy Soil" does two rinses as opposed to one. Can't see doing more than one bed sheet at time. Well maybe two twin or crib sheets but not sure how things would tangle. Machine seems to spend much time sitting just pfaffing about. It spins, pauses, spins, pauses, and so on. Pump is "30 mins on/30 mins off) not sure if that has anything to do with matter.

Checkrate/Likes 1 oh boy this looks like fun unfortunately mine is the plain one manual knobs xqbm22-c it does tangle everything into a mess dress socks are in a ball boxers and such not too much but still tangled I watch it and untangle it before it spins it spins up slows down about 3 times then spins at normal speed interesting cycles on this oh the only thing it will not do is spin with the lid up fill wash rinse drain all lid up the video one operates differently but that may be because it is electronic some pic since i went to see about the dg608 that will not heat Photos... < > Photo 1 of 5 View Full Size

Checkrate/Likes In my experience all impeller type washers will tangle things to some extent. Hoover strongly recommended not washing things for longer than recommended time periods in aid of avoiding a tangled wash. Putting things away after they came off clothes horse was still rather amazed at how well the little Hair got things clean.

Checkrate/Likes 1 *Four Weeks On* And am loving this little washer. May sell on my recently acquired Kenmore and Monitor table top washers! Once one learns to work with limitations of impeller washing machines this little Haier is a nice bit of kit. Yes, anything with sleeves and some other items tangle. One just reaches in and moves things about before spins to deal with that issue. Capacity isn't very large so it's not like having to sort out a huge amount. Capacity wise for bed linens we're talking two twin or one flat/queen. Can maybe add one pillow slip with latter and perhaps two with former. Again due to tangling issues it does seem wise to keep such loads small. Did a few dress shirts last night on "Normal" using Tide Coldwater Free in water at about 90 degrees F. Didn't pre-treat or anything to collars and cuffs to see what this machine could do on it's own. Everything came out a treat; collars and cuffs, the lot. Down side is extraction is rather anemic. Final spin is only about 700 rpms which leaves cottons and linens rather moist. Things bunged on clothes horse will take longer to dry unless put into spin drier for a bit first. No big deal as one normally does a wash last thing in day and leave things to dry overnight.
