Hey guys, thought I would share with you my latest acquisition. I was scrolling through local marketplace ads and saw exactly what the title says. I have had one of these dryers before with the matching Neptune washer (was older, 2004 models) and had no issues with it, and it was second only to a Kenmore/Whirlpool top lint filter dryer in drying speed, which is important. No one likes waiting forever for clothes to dry, even with a washer that only spins them at 600-650 RPM. Anyways when I got it home, I already of course knew it was new because of the cardboard around the exhaust duct, stickers, etc. Inside the drum were the manuals, still in the plastic packaging. What I noticed right away as you’ll see in the pictures, it has the Maytag Neptune logo on the control panel near the buttons, not separate from them, as was the case with earlier models. Must of been something they did in the last year or two of production as my 2004 Neptunes had the brand logo on the separate decal to the right side of the control panel.

I so wish the sellers had the matching washer as well, either a MAH5500 or MAH6500, but they did not. Sigh. A brand new Neptune front load set…now that would be truly amazing. I miss my Neptune FL (MAH6500) Unfortunately I had to get rid of it as it had a mystery balance/vibration issue that eventually rendered it completely useless. Just refused to balance for spin even though the bearings were fine. That was almost 10 years ago, but I kept the matching dryer (same model as this one) for some time after.

Anyways onto the other fun part, when opening the package with the manual(s), whoever had the matching washer clearly never tried the sample detergent, or took out the coupons. These coupons describe why it’s important to use HE detergent, what happens if you don’t, etc. If you’re not Canadian, Sunlight would be All in the US. Not sure if All is still around, I think it’s in blue packaging with yellow lettering, kind of the reverse of Sunlight branding ironically. The dryer was made in July of 2006, so just months away from Maytag’s demise. I’ve run a few loads through it now and it works flawlessly, has that new motor and heating element smell. Lol. You know the one.

The person selling it was moving, and had the dryer stashed away in their garage, and said they had kept it all these years thinking their old dryer would eventually give out but it never did. They were moving, and the old dryer was sitting on the deck. I asked what they were planning on doing with it, and said they were selling it also. So even tho I am unfamiliar with the design, I was in such a good mood having the new Neptune that I bought it as well. It’s an earlier WCI/White-Westinghouse dryer, I’ve used one before but never had one myself. My recollection was that it got very hot and had actually warped a synthetic/plastic design on a t-shirt when I used it. I blamed this on me using the high heat cycle. Aside from that I seem to remember it did dry pretty fast and evenly for the large load I was drying.

What are your guys thoughts on these? Like versus the Neptune which is basically just a classic Maytag SOH dryer, which is a better design? I vacuumed it out and holy lint! I’m surprised it didn’t start a fire. There was even burnt lint build-up in the back of the drum by the heating element. Scary. Anyways now that it’s vacuumed out and I cleaned it up a bit, it seems to heat and run fine (without a load that is). Very quiet. I know many people disliked the matching WCI washers but I had one for a few years and had no issues. They certainly cleaned well and had top-notch suspension compared to most other top loaders. This dryer is a very early WCI model (I think) and was manufactured in January of 1991. I will probably sell it and make a few bucks now that I’ve cleaned it out and made sure it’s working, but I do like it just because of the vintage look. And also something about that rear drum cylinder that looks cool. So I may keep it. What do you guys think?

The WCI/White-Westinghouse dryer

That I bought with it. This was before I cleaned it. Probably should have created a separate thread but oh well…

If you wanted it, I am happy for your finding it.

Just my personal opinion and not a judgement on your Neptune dryer acquisition, but that is a singularly ugly control panel.
