Looks basic and a little rough, but price is ok.

Other than the knobs & name, how do you tell this from a General Electric range?

None.  This one appears to be Harvest Wheat, which is post-1976.  By then, the 'Pods' had completely taken over Hotpoint and the metamorphosis into General Electric was complete.  Additionally, by 1977, 40" ranges weren't in high demand, certainly not sufficient demand to justify making something branded Hotpoint look any different from the identical item branded as General Electric.  Knobs and badges were sufficient.

Difference?

They weren't even trying here. The only things I can spot are that they used the Hotpoint-style knobs and I think I can make out a "Hotpoint" badge.

Do I see the name Hotpoint vaguely in the center of the control panel?

Almost looks like somebody tried to buff out the Hotpoint logo.

I'm not sure when Hotpoint 40" ranges began being produced on the same line as GE, but thinking it must have been in the early 70's. The last few years of the Louisville made models had even fewer differences between the Hotpoint & GE models.

The stove did that to itself as soon as it was plugged into the outlet.

This is one tired range

The aluminum control panel trim has been attacked with abrasives, and maybe even oven cleaner, which is why the hot point name is nearly worn off.

This was a good performing range, but there’s no reason to ever have a 40 inch GE built range that is not self cleaning, GE oven’s were not that well, insulated unless self cleaning.

I just noticed now that there’s no convenience outlet on this range, which also makes it (I believe) post ‘u6. If it had one I’d think it’d be right next to the button for the console light.
