Based on the serial number, you have a 1966 Empress with an 11" carriage and Pica typeface.

I'm not familiar with that model at all. However there are usually two methods used to trip the ribbon mechanism into reversing. Some ribbons have an eyelet about 3 to 6 inches from each end which trips the ribbon reversing mechanism on the full spool side. The other method is where as the spool gets full on one side the tension on the ribbon increases as it rubs along the ribbon direction mechanism thereby pulling it and changing direction . In some cases not having the ribbon threaded properly can affect it. There's also a great sister page soley for typewriter maintenance / repair questions.
