I’m not even sure how I ended up on this, but I found a circa 2005 Maytag Dishwasher Brochure. I’d never heard of American dishwashers having third racks prior to the late 2010s, and never heard of ANY dishwasher having a rack setup like this!
That crazy setup immediately made me thing of the current top-end rack setup WP is using in all their brands. Surely this inspired it, especially since Maytag is a subsidiary and any patents they filed on this unique setup would be owned by them. This also is the only dishwasher I’ve ever seen with 4 distinct wash arms as well. I don’t know anything about the quality at the end of Maytag’s run as an independent company, but I have to imagine these cleaned well. The upper rack was removable so very tall items could be placed in the middle rack at the inconvenience of a missing rack and dish space. It appears like a good idea but knowing the control board issues Maytag was having at the time, it probably suffered from those. I think they were also having premature rust issues with the racks, something that a lot of manufactures were suffering with as well. | ||

Perhaps they brought them back through Whirlpool.Jerome, this is a completely different 3rd-rack location and function than the current design. It has a dedicated spray arm beneath. Do any upper 3rd racks currently have a separate spray arm beneath? They're primarily for flatware, cooking utensils, and small items. Maytag did the 3rd lower rack for cookware near/at the end of their time before sale to Whirlpool. The brochure linked above is dated 2006. Didn't some other manufacturers have a 3rd upper rack before Whirlpool added it to any of their brands? | ||

whirlpool wash system I'm wondering if Whirlpool has updated their wash system on their own models for the 3rd rack with extra wash action since I don't see global wash anymore. What did they do to them? They could've put the self cleaning micro clean filtration in their own dishwashers. | ||

wash action I have to question the wash action, knowing there's a good chance that water will never get to the necessary racks to get all the dishes clean. If it does, it would take 3-4 hours due to that stupid puny pump that can't handle heavy soils. If this were a power clean, it would be a different story. | ||

Real Maytag three rack dishwashers
These were a Maytag design that they came out with. They also had it with a stainless steel tank. We still have customers with these dishwashers.
Overall, they worked OK they had a lot of weak points. I liked working on them. They were easy to access and work on compared to some other tall tub machines. I guess this would be the first true three rack dishwasher, the dumb thing was that the most powerful wash arm the bottom one was only used for a couple flat items so it really didn't have the cleaning power that the current KitchenAid and Maytag and whirlpool three rack dishwashers have. When whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006 they announced that they were going to keep this plant in Tennessee because it was an all new plant and it was very modern whirl pool. Continued to build dishwashers there for about two years, but they realized there were just too many problems with the design and consolidated all dishwasher building to Findlay, Ohio, and went to the better whirlpool designs, and that was the end of this dishwasher. I guess that makes this a collectible model. John L | ||

Whirlpool came out with a point Voyager dishwashers
Around 2001 they were sold under the whirlpool name generally with plastic tubs in the KitchenAid name with stainless steel tubs.
After whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006 Maytag dishwashers soon appeared using the point Voyager platform, but Maytag had nothing to do with engineering or developing the whirlpool point Voyager dishwashers. John L | ||

A Miele dishwasher with three racks from the 70’s. IIRC you could have other racks if it had to be used for other purposes than washing cups and saucers.
