An interesting concept behind this machine that most of the public did not accept. Using the same machine to wash dishes and clothes had very little appeal. |

Except what the public didn't understand is the tubs are completely separate, the way it is designed there is no way that any water that ever touched the clothes washing tub could then touch the dishwashing tub or vice versa. I can recall watching an episode of “Life With Elizabeth” Betty White’s first TV series in about 1955 in which her husband, I think his name was Brad had monkeyed around with their washing machine to also make it a dishwasher, because Elizabeth wanted a DW. They loaded it up with their dishes for a maiden run, turned it on and you could hear all the dishes and glasses breaking.
Maybe this TV program also contributed to the Thor Auto Magic not catching on? Eddie |

Eddie, the Thor Automagic was introduced much earlier, around 1946. I guess if it was going to "catch on", it would have done so by the time that show ran. |

In an era of cloth diapers many housewives simply likely shut down upon hearing about a combined washing machine and dishwasher. No amount of sales or marketing was going to be able to get past those objections once Mrs. American Housewife made up her mind.
IIRC Thor did sell good number of these washing machines as just that, without separate tub required for dishwashing. Indeed among collectors and others seeking holy grail of intact Thor "Automagic" kit units largely turn up without elusive dishwasher tub, just the washing machine alone. |
