Even after soap was replaced by detergents for both automatic laundry and dishwashing machines temperature along with mechanical action remained key players.
To cope with soils, fats, and oils found on dishes/pots and pans you need to break those substances down and keep them so thus can be flushed down drain. High pH along with water temperatures accomplish this very well. Throw in chlorine bleach for destroying protein soils along with sanitation and things get better. Heater on my GE Mobile Maid won't boost water temperature (cycles are just too short), but does keep water from cooling. If one resets main wash for another go (prolonging heating) yes, water temperature will start to rise. One did or does this often as feel short wash time of main cycle is just too short. Downside of above is that lacking any sort of thermostat GE MM at least continues heating water throughout main wash cycle long as timer tells machine to do so. This of course means energy consumption increases if wash is repeated. It also may be dangerous as there isn't a limit to how hot water will go. Long as timer tells heater to engage that is what happens. During winter when boilers are firing for heating "hot" tap water can be between 140 to nearly 160 degrees F. A few years ago when tempering valve was shot we had hot water near 170 degrees out of tap. |
