Miele W5740 Problems
[Down to Last]
Post# 1228337   4/9/2025 at 03:20 by mieleforever (SOUTH AFRICA)

Dear fellow members,

We have a Miele W5740, for about 15 years now, but of lately it has been giving us trouble.

The last year or so the machine has had difficulty in getting rid of suds, and continually have a suds lock during interim spins or final spins, eventually it will spin but at a much lower speed and when done we have to manually select the spin cycle again and 8 out of 10 times it would spin at the set speed of 1400 rpm.

Ok this last couple of weeks it started to make a clicking sound quite rapidly and then through an error code "Technical Fault 63".

We have taken the machine in to the service centre and they can't find any fault with the machine, has happened two times now that they come and pick the machine up and then only to find out later there is no fault.

When back at our house it works for about 1 to 10 cycles and does the same thing, today however it threw out "Technical Fault Waterproof System, and I immediately turned machine off.

Any ideas out there?

Your input is much appreciated.

I think you're describing several issues here that just coincide.

The suds locking issue is known from this series.
There is a hose running from the drain system to the detergent drawer that is there to vent any air fron the pump.
That can become clogged by residue over the lifetime of the machine, which causes the pump to become air locked, reducing draining rate and thus causing suds locking.
That repair is a bit annoying as you have to manoeuvre the pipe out of the machine from both sides.

That's part Nr. 23/24 and the Y pieces in the parts diagram.

F63 is a water diverter fault.
That's probably scaled up or so.

That's part Nr. 28 and retails at about 140€.

I would guess that the waterproof fault is just something coming loose and causing a minor leak.
If the machine has been moved several time recently, that seems likely.
The waterproof fault is basically always triggered by the float switch in the bottom of the machine being activated (or it's wires becoming disconnected).

Honestly, nothing that particularly seems to hard to fix.

But at 15 years - depending on the operating hours, you can check that in the service menu - I think that's just a machine that's nearing it's end of life.

Hi Henene,

Any idea how I get to the service menu?

There should be several instructions online, just be careful to not change any settings you're not 100% sure you want to change, you can potentially brick the machine.

There are 2 menus, the service menu with al the tests and fault code storage and the operation hour counter, and the second menu with all the programming settings.

- Close the door, switch the machine off.
- Hold start.
- Turn the machine on while holding start down.
- The light for start should start flashing.
- While flashing, release start and immediately start pressing it 3 times for the service menu. (Pressing 5 times gets you into the settings menu.)
- Hold the button on the third (fifth) press.

After a few seconds the machine should start displaying an item. You can release start now.
Navigation is with the 3 buttons (left/right are up/down, middle is ok).

Yours should display anything in clear text.
Navigate to operating hours.
And while at it, might as well check the stored fault codes.

Here's a video - though German it shows you the gist of what to do.
Apparently, on some machines, you can navigate with the dial and start as well.

May have parts if needed

I recently acquired 2 free Miele W5741 machines, one had a bad logic board and the other had a broken spider. Managed to make a good one out of both. I stripped down the other machine entirely for parts and scrap (was in bad shape).

Thank you all for your imputs, I have managed to enter the service menu and ascertained that the machine has done 12 232 hours.

So I guess it has done it's bit for the world.

There must be some or other leak Henene, because I tilted the machine and water was running out from the bottom. The waterproof fault code however then reset itself, but I still think it should go back to the repair centre and see if they can perhaps fix the machine.

will keep you posted.

At 12k hours, throwing money at it really doesn't seem useful.

Miele always says their machines are designed for 10k hours.
At over 12k, the machine has done it's best.

I'd really advise on replacement, unless getting it repaired is possible at a reasonable price - or just getting the apparent transport damage fixed for free.

At that work done by the machine, bearing failure could be just around the corner, and throwing the equivalent of hundreds of dollars at could still leave you stranded either way, sooner rather than later...

But who's to say, you could still get a few years out of it.

Try cleaning the diverter while its still installed

This can be done while still in the machine.

Clean the brass finger things and the upper part they touch. Also do not drop the long thin springs down into the machine.

If you remove the wheel/gear with the brass fingers, there is a notch that is used to synchronize it and the red wheel.
