yesterday I was watching a video of a 1972 Kenmore top load...it was overloaded. I increased the video to 5x to watch and it rolled the load over really well, even though, like I said, it was overloaded... You really need to watch all these washer videos in FAST speed to be able to see the rollover if it's more of a slow overloaded rollover...as opposed to a normal load that rolls over in real time.

What struck me while watching was this: The rinse filled to the top, started agitating, but was so freaking SHORT! It was just about to start rolling over a part that stayed on the top when, BAM, it started to drain... the rinses were not long enough... Why were the rinses so short? If only the rinse would have been maybe 5 min's longer it would have been so much better. It did do spray rinses during spins, but still.

I'm thinking back to the top loaders I grew up with and the rinses were NOT very long at all... I never even thought about this until I just saw that video.

That's one thing I don't like about the 74 Kenmore. It needs longer than two rinses for big loads, particularly stiff denim. Just when it's pulling the load down it starts draining.

Belt Drives were 2 minutes, DDs went to 4 minutes on most of their cycles.

I agree that 2 minutes is to short. I'm guessing 2 minutes is from the days of straight van agitators with loose loading while dual action agitators brought about longer rinse times.

Rinsing is primarily a process of dilution ... so short agitation time isn't a serious problem.  Some rollover is helpful to insure distribution of softener but even a half-roll is enough for that.  IMO.

Yes I agree as long as you can get at least one rollover then that's fine. The Amana NTW4516FW I had a few years back had a 10 minute rinse when set to heavy wash !

I agree with Pat, you need to stretch and pull the fabric forcing the fresh water though it.

Rinsing is

Every bit as important as washing.

Washing loosens the dirt, but if the dirty wash water and detergent aren’t completely rinsed out and removed, the clothes are not clean and residual detergent will dull them. Barely one rollover in the rinse tub is not enough.

There was great reason for Rinso’s jingle: Rinso white and Rinso bright.

Rinsing was one of the reasons why some women objected to automatics when they entered the market. Top loaders only do one rinse. Wringer washer users who were particular about their laundry used to rinse clothes twice or more until the rinse water was clear.
