I'd say better start saving up for a replacement. Sooner or later, there's a very good chance you're gonna have to get a new machine. Especially with the uncertainty of Whirlpool today where they may later go bankrupt for failures like my brother's Maytag.

Check to see if the wires are loose going to the drain pump.
Hopefully it’s an easy fix before getting worse.

They have a service bulletin for the pump. The area where it mates with the tub is under-re-enforced due to thin wires. You'll need to replace the wire harness or splice the wires together, then use a hanger to re-enforce the area.

I never understand why they don't find all these things that go wrong after a model is introduced to the market... I mean, I thought they researched and developed the crap out of these things. Wouldn't these problems show up during the MANY HOURS of testing they do on them? I mean, do they not even do R&D anymore?

You could try to have your washer fixed, but it may be a matter of time before something else breaks. At least that's what happened to my brother's machine, one part broke but still useable and then another one went where it was out of service. So they replaced it with this LG WM3400CW. Originally my sister-in-law wanted another top loader but I told her how much I love my LG front loader and that's the way to go nowadays. I think the era of top loaders are over in my books, there is no new top loader I'd buy anymore not even a SQ. SQ is just too expensive, especially their front loaders. If I had to buy a top loader today, I'd get a used direct drive. But, I have found that front loaders do a better job than a top loader. In fact, I once lived at a place where it had a front loader and a SQ classic top loader side-by-side, the SQ didn't clean as well as the front loader. So if I had to buy a new washer today, it'd be a front loader preferably LG.

mark_wpduet - bugs

@Mark_WPDuet -

The issue is that the VMW design has been cheaped significantly in the history of the design (as many products are).

The original VMW's had cast metal hubs (W10324651) with locking spanner nuts from the old Direct Drive systems. That got phased out in favor of a cheaper plastic design (W10528947)

At one point early on, the units had dedicated pressure switches which were basically identical to the late-year Direct Drives. Then those got phased out in favor of a pressure transducer which I can only assume is to cut costs - other brands still have them on some models.

Then you have the tub. It went from an all-metal design to one that has a plastic bottom. That happened around 2017 with their refresh that changed a few other things, I think when they went to the Pima Alto 2 board. When they changed to that design, they put a cheap-o ABS plastic bushing against the gearcase that will waller out after 4-5 years. Less if you overload against the Use & Care guideline specs. That has been the bane of refurbishers like myself for many years now until it was found that the ABS bushing could be stamped out and replaced with a Nylon 6/6 bushing which will last longer than anything else on the unit. Eventually, Whirlpool went back (in 2024 I think) and added a metal re-enforcement collar to shore up potential play, similar to how the older Cabrio bearings were.

Constant revisions to cheapen the same design is always, in my opinion, a bad idea. Yeah, I get it that they gotta screw people over to keep the stock price fine, but eventually you get some really bad changes that don't wash out during the FEMA process.

Front loaders utilize gravity friction, have higher RPM, and they're more delicate on my laundry so I have less lint removal. I also appreciate that they're more quieter, use less electricity and water, and can fit in bigger loads. I have sensitive skin myself but my front loader does so well where I never needed to use free & clear detergent. As much as I love my Kenmore 90 Series top loader and will always be my favorite washer, my LG front loader is a night and day difference. You're welcome to still stick with top loaders which is fine but my house is never going back to a top loader.

no need to worry panasonic vac not closing the door on the option and by the way on the dryer do you know what the error code is when cool led light flash done led light flash and end of cycle signal off light flashing means?

I don't

My brother doesn't have the matching dryer, he does have a Maytag but it's one of their basic 29" models. Those are good machines. Honestly if I had to buy a brand new dryer today, I'd get one of Whirlpool's basic 29" models. WAY cheaper than buying a matching LG or SQ dryer.

My home was built in 1968 and my family has been its only owner. Since that time we are on its 5th dishwasher. It’s current one a Kitchenaid is 6 years old. So on average for us they last around 10 years. We had a caloric that was about 5 years and a Kitchenaid superba from 1999 last 20 years. You win some you lose some on everything.

Cite the model number, there may be a tech sheet with the fault codes explained available on WP's service portal.

There's nothing in either the tech sheet or service manual regards to those indicator lights referencing a fault code.  Fault codes are in format of FnEn on the numeric display by accessing service/diagnostic mode.

It looks just like my old 1989 A211, but it has a lot more options.

Looks like it's a A712, never guess where I found it!

Its a Maytag A712 washer, TOL for its time. Made with the pitman transmission from 1984-June 1989. The lower o-ring seal was replaced with the lip seal beginning in June, 1986. The orbital transmission was installed in July, 1989 until its production end in 1990. The matching TOL dryer was a DE/DG 712 from 1984-early 1989 then replaced with the very short lived DE/DG 713 as a TOL dryer until its production end in 1990.

Well Alex, I got gifted a used Frigidaire (Fridgemore) fornt loader in 2006 with the intention from that point on to never go back to a top loader, particularly a DD desgin. I coined the term shredmore and it still sticks with me as far as I'm concerned.

I had a small conversation in a youtube comment section with someone who posted a video of their horrible HE TL washer (I think it was from 2017) and miraculously it's made it and still working with no issues... He was watching it try to roll over a load and was cussing it... laughing at how ridiculous it was...I think it was a Kenmore TL washer...

He said he can't wait until it does and they replace it with a better TL...

I said, "Why not just get a front load" He says there's nothing wrong with FL's, but that he just likes the way TL washers operate more... That they are more pleasing to watch or something like that...

I disagree totally.. I think the coolness factor of a front loader is higher than a TL washer... Especially the clean washer cycle..

But to each their own I guess...

if someone wanted to give me a brand new IN BOX HE TL washer, I would say no...I would rather have the worst rated front loader on the market.
