On Friday I finally made the trek to Wytheville VA to visit Mark (lightedcontrols) at the great warehouse. The photos below are of the beautiful jewel that I came home with. Less than 24 hours of restoration work and here is the outcome. I have to say that I've never had more thoroughly cleansed, fresh smelling clothes. I'm looking for more things around the house to wash now... Hope you all enjoy the photos.

This is the rinse turnover. 4 T's, 3 dress shirts, 5 pairs of socks, 4 pairs of underwear, 1 pair of jeans, 5 pairs of pants all with great turnover

Awesome!

Looks like a great find you got there. First candy red (or orange) I've seen in a 1-18, is that factory or custom?

You guys...

joelippard's profile picture
have no idea how happy I am to have this unique machine. The color is the original Poppy Red from the factory. It was purchased by Mark from the original owner who still has the dryer and will not part with it. I almost don't want to use it much so I don't wear it out but man... it's so much fun to wash in and my clothing is noticably cleaner than from my 90's Whirlpool direct drive.

I've tossed around the idea of adding sound dampening to the interior panels. What do you guys who are "in the know" on these things think about that? Has anyone done it before?

Poppy Frigidaire!

peteski50's profile picture
That is almost the exact match to my Aunt's Poppy 1/18 she purchased in 1974. Hers didn't have a window and she had the matching dryer. She had the basement wall painted poppy to match the set. Real awsome.
Best Of Luck,
Peter

What a beautiful machine. I just love the circle spray fill. Did Mark have the matching dryer for this one?

Nope, the original owner of the dryer still has it and wouldn't sell it. If Mark had been able to find a matching dryer I think he would have put the set into his collection. I think it was a little hard for him to sell it but I promised him it would get best of care from me... that's one reason why I put up the photos so he can see how it turned out. I didn't know I could love a washer so much...

I had the same one in Baltimore in almond. Then , while I was in South florida(Ft.Lauderdale)I got that same model with its matching dryer when the Finkelsteins(owners of IHOP)came to my jobsite to replace all of their FRIGIDAIRE Poppy Red appliances on their yaught. They were rarely used and the range was the Touch N Cook.Their 1-18 washers were great but the dryers weren't that well designed.I had a lot of issues including drying time with every 1-18 dryer I owned. The felt drum liners were a bitch to replace and the igniters would get lots of carbon build up on them.I'd have to use a wire brush monthly on the igniters to keep them from failing. The dishwasher too had issues.the interior door liner would warp and become loose. The steam escaping from the vent caused warping on my Formica countertop. The range was as awsome as the washer! So was the refrigidaire FRIGIDAIRE called it "The refrigerator tha talks back"It was a 3 door model that had an AM-FM radio and cassett tape player built in to the upper freezer door. You could play music or put a blank tape in to leave messages on. I think that the compactor was made by Nutone. It worked o.k. but was hard to find bags for.I wish I could have brought them here! They'd look great in my apartment!

I absolutely LOVE the dryer I adopted from Mark (see archive thread below for pics - # 15714). I have a friend that, seriously, wants to see me put it in my will that she can have it eventually (LOL). I'm saving up $$$ for a vintage TL washer now!
