the model number is said to be KUDS220T4
But I'm used to KDS-17/18/19 etc, not KUDS...whats with the KUDS?? Is it midwestern?

I see one of these for sale, is it a Hobart machine or a transition whirlpool machine?

looks like a superba series 22 from the photos

.....
will it fit into a KDS-57 body?, that is..can it be turned into a portable using a KDS-17's (-57) portable body components?

frankenwasher...

KUDS22 is a ~1992 Superba. I have one, currently being used by my sister.

It's a pretty cool machine.

Series 22 has touches of Whirlpool -- reversing motor -- but has heated Flo-Thru drying and a sump heater for water, new-style lower rack with plates to the side, classic 16-position upper rack with adjustable dividers.

The first fill on Pots/Pans & Normal is delay-heated to 140°F.

Sani Rinse heats by time, is not delayed to a specific temperature.

Pots/Pans has three wash periods, heats twice in the first wash with a spray & soak period. It may heat in the 2nd wash as well, don't recall, been too long since I last used the machine.

I would keep that baby just the way she is. It's a fabulous dishwasher. I recently picked up a KUDS22 Superba Selectra (the electronic version of this machine), almost new, hardly ever used - for $50. It really does do a good job. It's the Hobart design, with some Whirlpool influences. Love it. It's not a tall tub, but not too many challenges getting things to fit thanks to the shape of that upper rack. Most tall things like broiler pans, cutting boards, etc., fit fine along the sides of the lower rack.

The big difference with the Selectra series is that you can actually turn off the water pre-heating in every cycle if you want, it has a nifty energy and temp monitor that tells you how hot the water is inside the machine, and how much energy your selected cycle is going to use via bar graph.

Looking for a donor box then...

Can a built-in be upgraded into a portable? That's my ultimate goal.

Did they make a portable version of this '92 superba 22?

Where might I find a donor portable in which I can insert this superba 22?

Yup - My daily driver too!

Even with the black panels as this one has. The model number is KUDS22TO1. The last digit has some significance (I remember that being mentioned here a year ago or better) but it's the same machine. Those who've heard about it will know, it was salvaged from the sidewalk for trash pickup! Makes me wonder if it was replaced by anything even close...

I've bought this superba 22

I haven't picked it up, but I've given my word to buy it.

The question is, how difficult is it to convert it to a portable?

I've read the instructions for converting a portable to a builtin, but what about the other way around?

Next question
$$$$$$$$
I'm inserting that money symbol hoping to get more replies

Anyone have a 20-23 kitchenaid portable, no good, which I can use as a body donor? Wheels, side and rear panels top, etc.

I suspect most have gone to the recycling center in the sky.

how on earth do people consistently abuse their rack tines like that?

Post# 285597 , Reply# 13   6/16/2008 at 20:32 (5,791 days old) by jeffg ()

It may not be abuse, but simply adjustments to fit tall or awkward pieces. We often bend the tines in our DW to accomodate bowls, pots and baking pans.

question about racks

stopmeister72's profile picture
On partsselect.com, the racks for KDS21 are NLA but the racks for KUDS220T4 are available. Is this rack compatible with KDS18-21 models?
Later on tonight will post a thread of my SUPERBA day yesterday. :-)

Picked it up today

I had a good 5hr sunday drive and picked up this DW today.

It looks nice. No problems with the tub or any obvious distress on the mechanicals that I can see. The screen on the pump top is still intact.

Problems include the split rails on the upper rack and some chrome off of the buttons.

Any series 22 upper racks looking for a home? Send me your buttons, racks, and series 18-20 portable cases, or links to the same. I'm hoping to turn this one into a portable, and a kitchenaid case would be great (since I'm familier with my KD57 unit's case).

These trips make one a bit fatigued. 2000 T&C minivan got 27-28 mpg on the trip @ 60, not too bad really. so why do crossovers only get 23 mpg hy???

I have KDS-18 racks

I have KDS-18 racks. They are in very good condition. They are compatible. Hopefully Steve T will tell us the differences between KDS-18 & KDS-22 racks.

Congratulations on your new machine.

Presto Chango!

The Lower racks of the 18-22 series machines are virtually identical. The 18 had 13 rows of tines on the left side so you could get 14 plates down the side and the later machines had 12 so you could fit a larger bowl or other piece in the back. The side tines were configured differently on the 18 as well; more of them closer together. The 19 thru 22 were all the same. The lower racks on the 22 and 23's were basically the same setup but it had the removable set of tines on the left side which allowed for large pots and pans to be placed in the lower racks without bending the tines. It also would be able to be placed in one of two positions in the rack to give more room on the right side. Seems dopey to me but I guess that was wehat the public wanted. There were also some minor variations in the placement of one tine which kept the silverware basket from moving around. It was removed when they went to the really big, nearly full width silverware rack. I like that rack because it really gives the silverware a place to be with loads of room for the water to get at it and clean them.

The top racks, by now most of you know are different yet the same!
We all know that the original 18 racks had the smaller diameter washarm under the rack which was obsoleted and replaced by the 19 series which had the bigger arm which did the corners better. This was used thru the 23 series with some minor variations. With the 21's some came with or without the china guard depending on the model level. With the 22 series, they had flattened out the fron of the top rack which accomodated the small wares basket nicely and could hold a small pot there or bowl in a flat position.

If my memory is correct, the 23 series which notably did away with the Kitchenaid designed washpump assy and went to the WP powermodule had the same upper rack as the 22 but was mounted to the sides of the tank using the whirlpool mounting channels so you might have to change the rack adjusters if you got a rack like that and tried to use it in an earlier unit.

Gee.. did I leave anything out?

Let me know!
I just know Andrew in Orlando will find something I missed! LOL

Thanks Mark

My KUDS22 upper rack has split the rubber along the rail, as I hear is normal. So the replacement I'm seeking would correct that fault.

My bottom rack is in good shape

Stevet -
Can I install the long spray arm from my 22 upper rack, onto the 18 upper rack? Thus having the corner coverage?

Give it whirl!

I think you should be able to make the changeover since you will have all the hardware you need. What's the worst that can happen? You just put the 22 racks in it and get the repair kit and fill in the broken areas and hope for the best.
It has been so long since I messed around with any of these racks but I think it is a do-able task.

OK Steve....you missed something!! How come with the 23 Series Superba, I could not fit my everyday dishes with the upper rack in the second position, yet in the 22 series Superba, the damned things fit fine?? Is there a difference in the racks or the clearance of the racks? I assume it's the same tank between the two models with identical clearances. Did they change something with the racks or rack clearances? I found the 23 cleaned better than the 22 does, especially pots and pans, because they cycle times were vastly different. But fitting things into the 22 is a little easier. All my dishes fit with the upper rack in the second position. What's different?

All in the game!

Andrew,
Like I mentioned, the 23 had the Whirlpool tracks to hold the rack in place even though it still had the adjustable racks. I think they were mounted lower that the previous models. That may account for it. Also, it had the power module pump which was a good system and with the longer cycle times, it would definitely do a better cleaning job. I think they tinkered too much with the 22 times and that is why sometimes the results weren't what we would expect. Did the 23 have more than one rinse or was it like the 22? I could swear I had more than one rinse on the 22 I had in Valley Stream. In fact I took the 18 down here because it had the 3 rinses and the 22 had only 2. At least the one I had up there definitely had 2 distinct rinse and I always used the Sani cycle on it so maybe that added the 2nd rinse. Maybe someone here has the service manual with the cycle time charts and get a difinitive answer opnce and for all.
Enjoy the 4th!

Nope, both the 22 and 23 had only one rinse. The 23 omits the rinse between the first and second wash, too, and just does a purge. The second wash on the 23 on both Normal and Pots/Pans is 20 minutes long (or so). I believe that's heated. The Whirlpool tracks would explain the clearance problem. While it wasn't a huge difference, it made a substantial difference in loading ease on that machine. The 22 actually holds a good variety of different sized items pretty easily. Just needs an extra rinse and longer wash.

23 racks

roto204's profile picture
You're right, Steve; the 23 uses the Whirlpool mounting rails and when I went to put the rack from my 22-series Superba in the 23 I had found, I was surprised to find the rack rollers were different sizes--so I had to do a huge transplant of the rails and rollers from the 23 rack back onto my 22 rack so that I could have the nice metal wash-arm and china guard, as opposed to the plastic upper wash arm and no-china guard of the 23.

The things we do :-)

It is our passion!

Yes, Nate, the things we do for our love of these vintage machines. I was lucky enough to find a Selectra 23 but alas, the controller was bad and they are no longer available so I trashed the unit. Not that I would have paid what they wanted for it.I saved the bottom rack but it isn't in very good condition. By then WP had really cheaped out on the rack coating and most machines of that vintage have junked out racks and really badly chipped porcelain inside. Looks like they had even made that thinner!
I can't even begin to understand why they went to such an extent to redesign the 23's for such a short period of time instead of just continuing on with the 22 style with an upgraded model number and cycle selections. The racks weren't the only redo.. the motor itself has a smaller diameter mounting hole so you cannot swap it into an earlier 21 or 22.Just seems like a really costly machining process to do with a whole new bottom assembly. I guess a machine shop could make an insert for it but then you would have to change the washarm too. Unless others are like us and save stuff from machines we are forced to trash!
