I am having a problem with a Maytag A206 automatic washer that I am hoping I can get help with. The drum will not spin for the wash cycle (the belt just slips, brand new belt). If the machine is set to spin it works just fine. The drum spins and the pump removes the water.

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

The drive pulley is turning but it appears there is too much resistance to turn it in the direction for wash which is the opposite direction of spin.

transmission issue. Either the oil in the tranny has become like varnish, or you have a busted gear that will not allow the pulley to turn easily.

If the washer is in good enough shape, you might consider dropping in a donor transmission. Just about any Maytag washer of the same capacity with a helical transmission will do. 06's, 08's, 10's, most 12's or their variations. I suppose you COULD drop in a orbital transmission, if you really wanted to, as well...

I wouldn't point the finger at the trans every time this diagnosis comes up. There are several components between the pulley and trans that could cause this problem like a frozen/stiff brake rotor bearing or radial bearing.

You message is somewhat vague, the drum is not supposed to turn in agitation, if the agitator will not agitate, more than likely the fibre gear is stripped, and time for a rebuild. Also replace the oring in the trans housing because they get old and form a flat spot snf you will have grease underneath. if you decide to tear down, remember the tub nut is LHT and also the basket hub, and that has an allen screw, that 1st must be removed before you take the hub off. If the tub nut is corroded and will not move drill a couple of 1/8th holes in the nut and with a small chisel it will crack. More than likely a bad gear if it won't agitate.

Dan, the bearings you mentioned would affect spin, not agitate. most likely it could be a bad gear in the helical trans or a bound up upper shaft which was also semi-common.

I would like to thank everyone for their responses. To add some clarity to the issue the drum will turn in both directions when I remove the belt and turn the pulley by hand but it seems to be excessively resistant. It feels like bearings that are very stiff. Does anyone know where I could find on the new schematics.
