Not being very washer savvy when I look at that agitator being narrow at the bottom and widening towards the top how much agitation would it produce with a 1/4 or les fill of water. Seems backwards to me.

We had a Fedders Norge with a very similar tub and agitator to this, the agitation is powerful in these machines with a medium sized wash load. Always got the clothes clean.

I always thought those base fins were a little too shallow for the size washtubs they put them in.

By the way Goatfarmer, nice machine. Is this a Borg-Warner washer?

I'm not sure,the metal tag says "Norge Division,Edison NJ."Normally,it says BW,or Fedders.

Also,I remember reading VHQ standing for "very high quality",in some old advertising. Is that what it means,or is there another meaning?

Post# 68533 , Reply# 10   5/28/2005 at 19:00 (6,921 days old) by agiflow ()
Fedders

I believe Fedders used to produce A/C's in NJ also.

Yes VHQ meant Very High Quality. This is the first time I've seen a good inside photo of one of these washers that's still the old design (filter stream and water entering on the left (vs. burp-up & water entering where this filter stream comes in). I"m so used to the big ol' bakelite black agitator of our Norge15 Dispensomat, which have very large fins at the bottom and it splashed a helluva lot on ex-lo water level and any water level below mediu, pretty much sloshed the clothes back and forth with not a lot of turnover, unless it was a very small load. So, due to my rambling, but, I still think the small fins at the bottom managed to cause quite a bit of turbulence which washed the smaller loads very well. And the large loads got movedf with that intense, big arc agitation with those large fins towawrd the top.

Kenny, can I see a photo of the rest of the control panel?

THanks, Bob

I agree Appnut, i think overall, though i didn't see it at the time, that the Norge was probably the best washer that i used.

Amazing tub capacity for an early seventies machine at 20 lb. no less. I would love to have that Norge back again.

Yes, Norge washers in the 60s and early 70s had a reputation for being great cleaners.

agitator

Mom had a similar machine in 73/74 with 8 or 9 pre-programmed settings/cycles that adjused water temp and speeds.

I liked the agitator, in that the bottom vanes created enough turbulence to get up most of the way. Then the larger fins at the top would make/create more turbulence where the bottom fins would not reach.

It had a nice long stroke and a speed that was neither too fast nor too slow. (giggle)

They really were nice machines. The one I knew died of an oil leak too!!

The timer on our Norge went bad and would continually go through the cycles without shutting off.

It was my mom's favorite machine.

That model is very close to the one my favorite great aunt had. Her's had more options, but I don't remember exactly what they were, but I know there was a recirculating lint filter with the basket on the rear. Would love to see some product info from this model year.

We had one when I was a kid, fantastic washer. One of the
best we ever owned. It would take 20lb loads with ease and
all would be spotlessly clean. It was noisy though. We got
about 14 years of heavy use, died of an oil leak. There was
a confidence that anything one threw in it, it came clean.
Good turbo rinses and filtration. The sweeps on the agitator
were long if I remember right.

Agitator sweep

"The sweeps on the agitator

210 degrees, something they touted in their advertising

spray rinses

I can't recall correctly, but i believe the early seventies Norge's had four spray rinses per spin. Reminded me of Kenmore washers.

Ours also had the semi-neutral drain also. All in all a great workhorse and very well built. I know blah, blah, blah LOL.

I just LOVE SS. That timer dial rocks my world!
What are the two cycles, can't quite make it out.

Mom's had a regular and a pre-wash cycle. As as I said earlier, the speeds were controlled by the pre-programmed buttons.

Pre-wash ==> Fill-wash-drain-spin

Other than the huge "CLUNKS" of the spin solenoid engaging, it was a good machine. Mechanically it resemtbed a Maytag to the point that I believe the drive-belt was also below/underneath the base.

I loved my aunt's Norge washer. It had a suds saver. When you would start the washer on the suds return cycle, the agitator would splash and kick up a tremendous amount of suds. Actually, the lid lock was engaged during the suds return cycle. But by then, I knew how to defeat it.:D

Lid lock ?

I never knew Norge made machines with lid locks. Anybody know what years Norge made lid locks on their washers?

Only machines I remember with locking lids were Westinghouse, and their WCI counterparts.

Lid lock only worked on spin and suds return cycles.
