started to give the modern maid impeller roto rack dishwasher a tune up today. got this from the church when i visited matt (everythingold) several weeks ago. this is my first impeller machine and i was anxious to see how it was built.

all in all it's in great shape.

racks are perfect! bottom rack!

top rack too!

tub is in equally fine shape for it's age!

one more

here

i watched this machine in action the day i took it out of the church and even with the broken impeller peices it really moves the water!

i don't plan on ever using this machine to wash dishes as i'm afraid to break impeller more than it is. this one will be a conversation peice only. but i am going to test it this week when i get it back together.

it has no water seal

but uses that extended tube that the impeller slips over. there is a rubber boot at the top that the motor shaft slides thru to help keep any water out of motor shaft/tube area.

there is another larger diam rubber ring near the bottom of the tube that acts as a water baffle also.

here it is with rubber seal off

the tube

tube is in good shape and seal is also

rubber seal

is still very soft and pliable for it's age.

the other rubber ring at the bottom of the tube is also

here's the front

all stripped down. note the unusually large detergent cup

it is operated mechanically from the timer by a cam

i will show pics of this when i put timer back on.

Post# 352803 , Reply# 9   5/28/2009 at 18:28 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
the fill "funnel"

is fed by a copper tube! those days are over!

note the drain pump and the large rubber tube that connects from the tub to the pump. this was very dirty and brown in color and i soaked it ans scrubbed on it till it looked much better!

Post# 352804 , Reply# 10   5/28/2009 at 18:30 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
here it is

all clean again. well as clean as it will get

that small hose coming out of it's side connects to a water pressure switch.

another pic

of it with timer in background. timer works fine.

one more pic

of this rubber connector.

i must have a "rubber" fetish!

Post# 352808 , Reply# 13   5/28/2009 at 18:35 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
on the top of the machine is

a large rubber vent like device. it was equally dirty but cleaned up well

Post# 352811 , Reply# 14   5/28/2009 at 18:40 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
here's the underneath showing

motor, fill solonoid, water pressure switch and drain pump.

this is the only dishwasher i have ever run across that has a full size metal plate or pan that sits under the motor and connects to all 4 of the legs.

normally i would take it off but the drain pump mounts to it and i don't want to disturb it's originality. i mean it was designed with it so i have to keep it. i did take it off today to get motor out however.

close up of motor mount

very easy to take motor out.

Post# 352813 , Reply# 16   5/28/2009 at 18:44 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
motor is

in great shape, runs very quiet. it's a 1/3 h.p. 1725 rpm.

gave it a good oiling at both ends (we like that).

let it run awhile and it stayed nice and cool.

Post# 352815 , Reply# 17   5/28/2009 at 18:45 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
it has an

extended shaft that screws onto main motor shaft

Post# 352816 , Reply# 18   5/28/2009 at 18:48 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
here's the motor mount

note the drain tube that the rubber connector clamps to. it had a bit of rust on the end so i got out my wire brush and drill, some sand paper and my rustoleum primer.

this is the only rust on the entire nmachine!

Post# 352817 , Reply# 19   5/28/2009 at 18:51 (5,447 days old) by soberleaf ()
no more rust problem

with that! i will wait 2 days, recoat, wait 2 days and put a coat of rustoleum on it before reassembly. good things are worth waiting for they say and rust is a huge enemy of dishwashers with metal tubs! especially one this old!

old metal fill valve!

i have already taken off it's solonoid in this pic

and all seems well

i found the schematic

glued to the lower front panel.

the motor and heater element

are wired in parallel and both operate together thru both the wash and dry cycle

this machine has a rinse, wash, rinse, wash, rinse, rinse and the washes are 8 minutes each, all rinses are 3 minutes except the final which is 5.

it says each fill is 6-8 quarts, timer advances 7.2 degrees every 60 seconds and drain pump runs when motor is off

there is a rinse/hold, wash/hold, regular wash and a super wash with hygenic rinse cycles.

dry is 17 minutes and total cycle time is 49 minutes.

gee, these new machines today should take note of this little
iumpeller model's ability to wash and dry a load in 49 minutes! and it probably does as good a job too! with a single impeller!

hope you dishwasher fans have enjoyed this little photo post, i am going to take a break and take a couple more pics as i start putting it back together here. will post them later here tonite.

Great pictures and restoration! Try Larry at Modern Parts House in Parma, OH, I did get that exact impeller brand new from him about 10 years ago for a Frigidaire D&M dishwasher so he might have another.

Post# 352841 , Reply# 26   5/28/2009 at 20:38 (5,446 days old) by soberleaf ()
wow thanks!

that would be great, so larry in parma might have the part! i know parma well! i lived in sandusky ohio for 10 years when i worked for cedar point. in fact i moved to minneapolis when they bought valleyfair in the late 70's.

i will try to get ahold of him via phone tomorrow!

thanks as always, this site and you guys are great!

i was just talking to a member who picked up a 1-18 today and i told him to post his questions on the site. seems it won't go into high speed spin but that's a seperate topic i know.
but after talkin to him i got excited and used my 1965 rollermatic again tonite! love that washer!

now back to the dishwasher at hand here!

Pete, You have really detailed your efforts nicely here. The method of driving the impeller is exactly the same as the Kenmore that I used to have back in the early 70's. And the rubber drain cover, and rubber sump is exactly the same as well, indicative, I think, of the D&M machines.

Pete,

It is great to watch you do what I never had time to do. These dishwashers were waiting patiently for you to rescue them. Super job. That impeller machine is impressive. And I like the product placement for the Zoom Spout turbine oil, great stuff. Larry at Modern is very well stocked, but you seem to have a knack for finding parts. OOOHHH, what's next? The Slant Front GMFR TL? The stainless steel KDI 16? The avocado portable? I really enjoy your posts. Oh, and I'm picking something up today that will rev your engine, I'll send pics later. I think your handle should be "DishwasherKing" matt

love havin my engine reved up!

i rev it whenever i can you know! so i'm excited to see what you are sending pics of.

i have already ordered a seal for the slant top frigidaire in case it needs it, parts are still available at parts houses!

the kds-16 stainless door is on display in my living room along with 7 other machines and the frigidaire rollermatic. i'm not worried about any of my kitchenaids as i can get tons of parts for them and pump parts are still manufactured by hobart for their comercial machines.

the kelvinator d&m i have ordered a pump seal for also. as soon as this modern maid impeller machine is back and running (later this week, have 2 more coats of paint to put on that tub opening) i am going to start on the kelvinator.

i also am in the process of putting the sears roto rack back together after a good tub sump paint job and new seal installation.

and my kd-15 is on it's final sump painting coat and will be back together in a week.

so yea, i'm up to my gills in dishwashers here! but i love saving these old machines! and that little g.e. mobile maid that is giving me problems in another post i did last nite is going to just "sit" for awhile in a "time out". it has won this round but the war isn't over yet!

Nice Impeller dishwasher

turquoisedude's profile picture
Wow, Pete, you scored a great machine there! I am sick to think that I trashed a top-load impeller machine that had an impeller that probably would've fit.... Oh, if we only knew then what we know now!
Keep up the good works and keep posting! Can't wait to see this machine in action someday!

found the impeller

as you prob have already seen from my seperate orgasmic post!

think i will change my name from "soberleaf" to "dishwasher drunk"! as it definately is an addiction! this addiction is ok however!
