I gave it a wipe off and tried it.. Nothing happens. I may first try changing the plug or cord. Super late model though.. I'd say maybe late 80's or early 90's..? |

This didn't come home with us. I wouldn't wish the task of getting it out of this basement upon anyone! |

Try adjusing the screw for the thermostat. Also make sure darkness lever is not all the way over to off either. If it turns out to be a cord might I suggest sprucing it up with a N.O.S. cloth appliance cord from the early 60's. I have a huge stash of them (still in their wrappers) I got off ebay and I would be glad to set you up with one....PAT COFFEY

Love the GE Fan! It is so clean! I remember this fan in the elementary school that I went to. Every class room had two. Brent |

I think your "mink stole" might be a fox fur piece. These were sold to dress up the neckline of a winter coat or suit. It looks to me like you may have already discovered that the fox head usually has spring-loaded jaws, so that you can clamp the jaws onto another part of the piece to secure it around Milady's neck. However, some fur pieces were mink, so it could be that too. Fur pieces used to be Big Business, highly coveted by women. The longer the piece and the more skins used, the more expensive.

Growing up we had one of the later, sliding lever controls, and now I have a T20 (1949-50). I found the regulation to be better on the later, lever models. Sometimes i have to unplug the toaster early to get the desired light toasting on my early T20. That said, I'd rather pull the plug once in awhile in exchange for the nifty sunbeam design on the side, and the cloth covered cord. The knob regulator is much cleaner looking which adds to the streamlined effect. This toaster was significantly less "streamlined" than many toasters of its day, which is probably why the shape carried into the late 1990s with no visible changes. Funny story though...I remember watching old cartoons growing up that showed toasters with levers on the sides, where the toast popped up, and thinking how interesting that was, and how antiquated it must be. When our "Automatic Beyond Belief" toaster finally bit the dust, my parents bought a cheap crappy toaster, and I mused about the quaint mechanism by which it operated. It was only as I got older, that I realized most people's toasters worked that way, and that my experience had been the exception. |

...Oh what memories I have of those big electric fans. My grandmother had one in the kitchen and another on "the other end" of the house in hopes to create a constant breeze going through her extra long house. As a child I would simply drift asleep from the wonderful hum that ONLY a metal fan blade can create. I've recently recreated this as best I could by purchasing some metal reproduction fans (ALLAIRE) from Restoration Hardware. They are made well and I have a 12" at home and 8" on my desk at work. The sound of that fan and her Fridgidaire washer in the background brings back the fondest memories of summer. Where's the homemade lemonade? |

...For yesterday were not nearly so spectacular, but I'm still well pleased. Both were from Goodwill. I found a Lane sample cedar chest, about seven inches by four by three; these were given to girls graduating high school by Lane cedar chest retaillers in hopes the young ladies would then start a "hope chest" in a real Lane chest. And I found a cat basket similar to the one below. They're kind of pricey new - anywhere from $40-100 - and so finding a vintage one at $5 was great. It was also fortuitous, because my Tony turns ten this month, and this was the present I wanted him to have - a really uptown bed instead of the foam-and-plush thing he's always had. Again, the pic is not exactly the bed I found, and that's not Tony: |

Wow Fred - you really know how to do the estate sales properly! Remember the cool green Kenmore you got about two months ago? Well it arrived in Charlotte in mid-December in one piece and looking great. THANK YOU Fred and Robert!!!!! I will make a post about it when it warms up enough to not turn blue while I work in my garage. The machine already has taken ownership of a 'new' gold Roto-Swirl and a replacement timer. I wish you continued good fortunes in your estate sales! Gordon |

I was so bitter and jealous of my girl-friends that got certificates in the mail for their Lane chests, I tried and tried to talk one out of it but to no avail. Now I fear that 1-800-GOT-JUNK will show up at the door with grain shovels if I bring home any more stuff! No estate sales here this week but they should be back up and going again soon. My (pointless?) resolution this year is to be MUCH more discerning at the sales and bring only things home that I really need. We'll see how long that lasts. Yeah, I was the same way. Of course, knowing what I do now, I should have offered to trade a Punt Pass and Kick * ring for one - I'm sure some of the more, er, tomboyish girls would have been very happy to do that. * An old Ford Motor Company contest where they gave away trips to NFL games and stuff like that to boys who excelled at football skills. Anyone who signed up got a PPK ring, whether they did anything in the contest or not. And believe me, I didn't. |
