I am seriously considering shelling out $500 to $600 for a brand new Speed Queen top-loading washer for my new building-rather than spend it on fixing up that GE old-style washer with the $500 to $600+I cannot bear the thought of a transmission boot pulling loose, and water flooding my new building-GE old style parts are getting obsolete as well. Also, where is the lid safety switch on the current Speed Queen top loading washers-I want to be able to watch it agitate and spin, lid open. Do they have off-balance switches?

Lid switch is under the control panel on the rear 'lip' of the machine. There are other posts that discuss how to bypass.

Not sure about an off balance switch, but they do have an auto balance system (including ring on top of the wash tub). The more expensive the model, the more options you get, 2 speed motor, and a hush pak...which I recommend...it reduces the commercial motor noise down considerably. Also, you will need to increase the water levels...out of the factory, they only fill to what most older washers would consider a medium load. You can also find that in the archives.

Link to key features below. They have the ability to compare the models.

Also, check all SQ dealers in your surrounding area...some SQ dealers are strictly MSRP, while others can be considerably less.

Fair warning..I love my SQ AWN311 washer but one thing that I wasnt ready for was the water bill. We went from a front load Maytag/Samsung Neptune and our bill for water and sewage ran about $118 per quarter. We got our last bill from the last quarter and it zoomed to $255. Yep you read right $255 thats an increase of $137 bucks. YOUCH! So me thinks that we may go back to a front load washer. Plus the washer does not extract like a front load washer does. 710 rpms and the hole pattern leave alot to be desired. This is just my experience with my washer so far.

I LOVE MY SPEED QUEEN..........

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Speed Queen top load washers, I have the same one as my buddy DanMan, and I love it. The choice is yours, either you want to wash your clothes with water, in a top loader, or without water in a front loader. The only front loader that I like are the new Wascomats in the local laundromat, at least they use a sufficient amount of water.
Remember this too...so what if a machine spins at 1000 RPMS, if the clothes aren't that wet too begin with, of course they are gonna come out of the "washer" less damp.

TOP LOADERS ROCK!!!!

I've put some pretty hard stains through my new front loader....and EVERYTHING has come out clean. And my washer spins at 1200 RPM's :P And having your clothes come out of the dryer in just 25 minutes ROCKS! Don't be hatin'!

Yo aaronfitzy....

I ain't hatin' my brotha, I'm just sayin'.....It's a choice, to wash your clothes submerged in water, or to just have your clothes "saturated" ...I choose to have them submerged in water. Massman, you know we have a bond as fellow SQ owners, but don't you think it's a "wash" so to speak...You replaced that $1200.00 Maytag in just three years, while you did save on your water bill, you had to go out and buy a new machine..If it's just the thrill of buying a new machine, I can understand, but to save money on your water bill by buying another $1200 plus f/l washer, doesn't make sense, especially if you have to replace the machine in three to five years.. Where is the "energy efficency" in this.. landfills will be full of inoperable front loaders pretty soon, but we will have saved water...I just don't get it. It's half a dozen of one, six of the other.
Mike

Being a FL has nothing to do with it failing...I have had an electrolux based FL here in Canada that has worked awesome for 10+ years...I just replaced it with a Miele, not because it doesn't work but because I bought a dryer(old one died) that was a miele and wanted the matching pair...*and* I wanted a heater...

Had TL's all my life and will never go back to damaged clothes that come out dingy...
TL's are fundamentally a bad design...

The problem with most FL's these days are that they are made like c**p...cheap components glazed over in the lastest shade of plastic red....
However, don't confuse a bad quality product with a fundamentally better design...FL's are just better...hands down

exact description of lid switch location

I need a clearer description of where the lid safety switch is on these particular Speed Queen washers, and how to defeat them temporarily-run with lid open, please.

Post# 413025 , Reply# 10   2/6/2010 at 07:26 (5,192 days old) by jeffg ()

You can either take the top off, and it'll be obvious where the switch is and how to defeat it, or just get a 30" or 31" bungee cord and hook one end to the metal lever that runs to the switch (it's in back, under the top rim, on the side opposite the water valves). Hook the other end of the cord to the bottom of the washer, to put some downward pressure on the lever. This will activate the switch. Don't put too much pressure on this lever or you might bend it.

If you have access to a machine, one glance will explain it.

Unless you have free water, a solar water heater, unlimited detergent budget, or usually use the wash water over suds saver style or just do very little laundry each week or just don't care about the environment at all you would be ill advised the buy a new TL washer. A new SQ FL washer will last you at least 20 yrs and uses enough water to actually get clothes wet and clean. Even if the main bearings and seal do fail on this washer you just replace them you don't have to replace huge expensive plastic outer tubs. My brother and I have both purchased new SQ FL washers in the last 5 yrs and they are real work horses. For almost a year when my dog was sick I had to wash all 5 kitchen rugs in one load almost every day and it did a beautiful job washing all the you know what out over and over again with out a single problem.

Heat-pump dryer use about 50% less energy than regular electric dryers. Sold in Europe from Bosch/Siemens, AEG/Electrolux, Blomberg, V-Zug, Miele and probably others.

You got that right. I agree completely with Aaron. Every since I got my Fridgemore, I don't check for stains, just pour in Biz and away I go. And my clothes are lasting a lot longer, as well as linens, towels, ... Far diffeernt story with my old Lady Shredmore!!! And even though it's only about 900 RPM spin, I"m able to keep up with wash & dry times. NMASSMAN44 peersonally emailed me when I had questions about his Miele and he told me about the water bill. Extremely disturbing. Many of us DON'T have cheap wate like some of you do and it will continue to go up!!! And NMASSMAN44 still has his Miele set around somewhere. He may go back to them!!! (I wouldn't blame him). He also told me about a couple of other things he doesn't like about the SQ, but I'll let him divuldge those!! (And he doesn't do BobLoads in his SQ either!! and is even fussier than me bout laundry))

question for combo52

Where did you purchase your FL SQ?
I live in your general area and I'm curious who the dealer was, and if the prices were competitive.
Thanks

Mtn unless you have free water then I can see what your saying. But most people dont and here in the Metro Boston area we pay dearly for water. The geniuses at the Lynn Water and Sewer Commision upped the rates so people would conserve water. Well people have been conserving water by getting front load machines and then they realized that gee we are not making the same amount of money that we used to. DUH! So in order to keep the same amount of money coming in without tightening their belts they upped the water rate again. Its a vicious cycle.
I do like my SQ washer dont get me wrong and it washes well and yeah its fast BUT I had to raise the water level up to the top row of holes since the level they chose at EX Large was not doing it for me. Plus another thing I have to double deep rinse since we both are sorta sensitive to detergents.
The first deep rinse in the SQ does OK but the 2nd deep rinse does even better plus thats my softener rinse. Extraction oh where do I begin...could be better. Plus the hole pattern leave scum on the top of the load...and I am finding that scum is coming from the Downy softener I am using. It never did that before until P&G reformulated Downy. I called them on it too. I dont use the softener dispenser since the agitator actually holds alot of it in the barrel. It doesnt flush out completely and I end up with softener in the wash cycle for the next load.
So dont crucify me since this is what I am experiencing with my washer. I am not picky either .

Massman........

I can understand your frustration with the utility company and, having to pay higher water bills, I have the AWN542, and I haven't had a problem with scum build-up, but then again I don't use Downy, I use Suavitel (yes I know you don't like Suvitel) I guess I am just used to high utility bills here in the NY/CT area. My water bill is about 70 to 80 dollars a month. I wouldn't crucify you either, I wish you nothing but the best with your situation. I just wish front loaders used more water than they do. Take care...
Mike

I would say your best bet is either a Neptune washer...either the MAH5500, 6500, 7500 series.....which use a good amount of water

or a Frigidaire FL with the ROUND door, some places like Sears Outlet still carry them, uses plenty of water and if you need to you can adjust it with a simple screwdriver....I have to check but I think Sears also have them online still...

shop around and check them out....never hurts

I wanted the model with the heater but they were backordered and would have taken 4 to 6 weeks to get it. I upgraded to the Imperial set. Other thank a few hiccups with the dryer, they have been a good set so far.

I really like the simplicity of the controls on Malcolm's SQ but it doesn't seem to use an adequate amount of water, which is my main complaint about my Affinity FL machine.

I still think full size Duets are best. They have the "Clean Washer" cycle which is fun to watch, and over all do a better job, at least compared to my Affinity.

Tbolt,

If budget is a concern, consider the AWN432, it doesn't have the Fabric Selector switch which results in a few less cycles. If that's not a big deal to you. I like the fabric selector switch myself because I can just set the 'time' in the 'Regular' cycle and customize the speed of the agitator and spin via the Fabric selector switch. If you don't have these, those settings are controlled by the timer switch set to the various cycles such as Delicate and Perm Press. Just a thought if budget is a consideration. Personally, I wouldn't go any less than the 432 as you start losing the Hush Pak (important to quiet that commercial motor down) and extra rinse options...but that's just me.

Welcome to the Speed Queen club...we'll all be excited when your get your washer...it took me 6 months before I saved enough money to buy my set, have been thrilled since the day I got them and feel like a kid again watching my classic washer with the traditional agitator!

Water bill...

"We got our last bill from the last quarter and it zoomed to $255."

Hmmm...that's $85/month for water and sewer (usually a 50/50 split)...that's what I'm paying in Tennessee for the condo in the city ($80-$85). I also have a residence in the country where I never even reach the minimum amount provided under the standard service and pay $38/month for water only.

Mind you that there's 1 to 2 showers per day and 2-3 loads of laundry and 1-2 loads of dishes in the dishwasher per WEEK at the condo. Maybe I'm getting ripped from the water people. :|

Our water rates have been going up lately also. Our meter fee used to be $1.00/month and now its been raised to $18.00/month. That's $216.00 a YEAR for a meter fee...quite a jump from the old $12.00 year. Plus the actual water rate has risen to, I don't know how much more though. This was the whole reason we decided on a FL.

Does anyone know what the current Speed Queen top-loader washers do when the load gets severely off-balance-do they have an off-balance switch?

Does anyone know what the current Speed Queen top-loader was

My old SQ used to trip the unbalance switch and sit there until I re-distributed the load. My new SQ top loader, three years old, hasn't unbalanced yet. The old one very rarely unbalanced. In two decades of daily use I don't recall this happening with a greater frequency than once or twice a year.
