Well, sometimes these things just fall into place... Mike (dishwashercrazy) was contacted by a person who found his amazing collection of dishwashers and wanted to know more about this one that was in a house undergoing renovations and was up for grabs. The owner thought it was very similar to Mike's 1956 Frigidaire. This is what it looked like while still installed in its original location.
It has been repainted, I guess to match another harvest gold appliance once upon a time.

What made it interesting to yours truly was the fact that it was in Hamilton, Ontario! Not exactly next door, but feasible to get myself... After a few weeks of emails, plans, schemes, temper tantrums, and my final capitulation on getting a dog, I agreed to drive to Hamilton and buy it.
It was an easy drive (I was accompanied by an ex-co-worker who didn't mind being stuck in a car for 16 hours) but I was bloody tired by the time I got back to Montreal, just after 12:00 AM last Friday. Hubby drove it to work with him and then down to Ogden Friday evening. On Saturday, guess what I did??

IT WORKS!!! I did a 'dry' test (after cleaing out some pretty scary-looking crud out of the pump and spray tube) and the pump roared into life as soon as the current was connected. Solenoids tested fine, so did the heater. And...are you sitting down?? The TIMER works!! GASP!! I was turning cartwheels in garage where I am now building a new home for wayward vintage dishwashers.
I still need to do a water test, but I am confident, given the condition of the tub and sump area!

Lower rack looks great - thought that black spot was rust, but nope. It washed right off! Check the original cutlery basket with the mesh detergent cup!

Now here's a question - the upper rack is good but there is what I think is a removable section that I am not sure how to replace properly. I wonder if there is a section missing... It is totally different from the 62 Deluxe Frigidaire dishwasher of mine.

Rest of the upper rack. Also good but a little unclear on how to use those fold-down cup racks...
SO, I still need to do at least a bucket test to see how the pump seals are. I will have a few things to 'play' with...
The spray-tube inlet on the back of the tub looks like there was water leakage. The door gasket is totally shot. And I have to decide what colour to make it... It may wind up turquoise - now THERE'S a surprise... LOL
It should be a fun machine!!

Paul,

I have the Users Guide for my Frigidaire dishwasher. I will scan the pages and post. Please bear with me.

The removable section of the upper rack can be positioned: left, middle or right, depending on the placement of cups - this is the cup holding portion of the top rack.

The guide shows those fold down racks in the up position when large bowls or pans are placed on the upper rack.

Great to hear that you got this machine home and are working on it. How is the condition of the water pressure switch? I know where you can get one if you need it.

More after while.

Mike

Thanks Mike, that makes sense.
Whenever you get a chance, that user guide will be awesome!! The pressure switch seems good but I haven't tried the machine with water in it yet...
Oh, and I found a date stamp of 1 - 10 - 58!

Will you paint it Turquoise ?

Nice dishwasher; glad it seems to be in good working order. A couple coats of Frigidaire Turquoise, and it'll look pretty, too. My friend Brenda had a body shop refinish her white DW in Lupine Blue DuPont Imron enamel, and it looked sharp.
The manual was interesting, too. I've never heard of a brand of DW detergent called Thanx. It must have been short lived or a regional brand.

dishwasher! the pics are great and so is the manual that dishwashercrazy (mike) posted!

i had no idea the spin tube rotated that fast! i wouldn't mind aquiring one myself someday, it is one of the wash system styles that i don't have yet. and it's frigidaire! hopefully one will cross my path sometime here.

also wanted to tell you i installed the solonoid you sent me on the 1965 custom imperial timer yesterday and it works perfect! the timer now operates in two modes, 50 second increments and 75 second increments, depending on cycle selected. i hope to have this rollermatic as well as another operational by the end of the month! thanks again for the timer! and have fun with ther frigidaire spin tube! love the pink racks too!

what years were the spin tubes produced. i'm guessing late 50's thru 1964?

Pete, so glad to hear that solenoid worked for you!! I can't wait to see more of the rollermatic!!
I think the spin-tube dishwashers were made between 1956 and 1964, but I may be off slightly. I don't recall ever seeing advertising for a Frigidaire dishwasher prior to 1956 and I remember an entire neighbourhood in Beaconsfield, Quebec that was outfitted with all Frigidaire appliances (all turquoise, too!) when the homes were built in 1965...

When I acquired the 1956 Frigidaire DWUW (Undercounter model) from Ben (swestoyz) this past October 2009, he loaned to me two of his Frigidaire Service Tech-Talk books. I scanned the complete Dishwasher content from both books. One, from March 1956, featured the 1956 line of Frigidaire Automatic Dishwashers, which consisted of three basic models:

DWUW - Undercounter Model
DWFW - Freestanding Model
DWSW - Sink Combination Model

The other book, from December 1954, featured the V line of Frigidaire Automatic Dishwashers. The opening Introduction paragraph reads, in part, as follows: The V line of automatic dishwashers consists of the following four models:

DWV-8U - Undercounter Model
DWV-8F - Freestanding Model
DWV-8P - Portable Model
DWV-8S - Sink Combination Model

The DW denotes the product as a dishwasher, and the V for year of design (1955). The number 8 represents the capacity (place settings of dishes for 8 persons).

I believe that this (in late 1954) was their introduction of their dishwasher line of products. Also, if V stood for the 1955 Design year, then I am presuming that W stood for the 1956 Design year.

Attached is a page from that book showing the construction details for the first models.

Mike

it's a quick lesson in frigidaire dishwasher history which i knew little about. i didn't realize the spin tubes were frigidaire's ist line of dishwashers.

when i visited larry in parma last year he did have a motor and pump for a spind tube in his shop at that time. he may have parts for them still if you guys need any.

i would love to see a spin tube dishwasher in action with plexiglass for a dor to observe the action.

mike, you're great with videos, maybe this will be your next project?

Sorry, but as of March 9th, I purchased from Larry at Modern Parts, the used Frigidaire dishwasher pump and motor, dirt and all. He even included a new pump bearing. I believe it is different than the one currently on my model DWUW dishwasher, but I am not convinced that the one that came loose with my machine when I picked it up from Ben, is the correct pump/motor assembly. Why do I think that? Now that I compare depth of mine and the used one from Larry, the one from Larry is about 1/2 inch shorter, now that I have measured it. But before that, as soon as I attached the one that came with the machine, the whole cabinet then rested on the bottom of the motor. I had to install additional leveling bolts to the underneath of the frame to get the machine off of the motor. If you look in the above photos, there clearly are no leveling bolds. The machine rests on the frame itself. For the time being, the mystery will remain unsolved. I will be anxious to find some spare time to clean and check out things and decide what I am going to do.

For clarification, I water tested the machine in late October, and I discovered that I have a pump bearing leak. In early November during my second wash party, we ran the dishwasher with a piece of Plexiglas mounted in place, so we could watch the action. Unfortunately, I did not make a video of the action, which I am real sorry we did not take the time to set up. Anyway, I have the Plexiglas, and I plan to make a video of the machine in action as soon as I can resolve the pump bearing leak issue - water poured out of the weep hole/tube - which is in place for just such a bearing failure.

Mike

looking forward to seing that video

rollermatic's profile picture
sometime and if i can make it to your next wash party that you recently invited me to i look forward to seeing the machine itself.

i agree, the dishwasher should not rest on the motor/pump. larry is pretty much right on when it comes to knowing his machines, i would also assume that the pump/motor he sold you would be the right one and maybe the one that came with the machine was not.

personally i would not run that motor at all if you have a leak. hopefully you have a new seal? i would imagine between larry in parma or mark michaels with his huge frigidaire part stock and connections one should be available.

i found the same problem with that kd-14 kitchenaid i drove to cleveland and picked up last week on my week off from work. it seems that the motor/pump goes completely to the floor and the machine basically rests on it. i have not had time to post any pics yet but i do have it completely torn down and outside of that issue all else looks very good including the pump and seal. gonna get to it later this year, for me it's rollermatic time right now. finishing up 2 machines that i hope will be running very soon.

back to those wonderful spin tubes, they are so unique! i've seen impeller machines, spray arms, even that tappen roller machine with the large roller in the bottom to fling water, the younstown kitchen type central apray tube, and the frigidaire spin tubes? are there any other styles out there?

you and paul both have a very unique and classic vintage dishwasher there! looking forward to more pics (and videos) from both of you!

Got some work done on the Frigidaire this weekend...

turquoisedude's profile picture
Sunday was warm enough to be working out in the garage on this latest project dishwasher, so you can guess where I was... LOL Hubby had found some material that I think is going to work fine a new door gasket (I sent him out to get a new snubber for the Inglis washer, but that will be a whole other post!) but before trying that, I figured I'd give the tub a scrub out.
Here's the before picture...

And here's how it looked after some scrubbing. Still have a bit more to do (Geez they had lots of minerals in the water in Hamilton).

But whatever it was washed off (the same kind of gunk was on one part of the lower rack, too). So, it turns out the racks are in really great shape - bonus!!
With predicted highs in the mid-70s this weekend, you can bet I'll be doing the first water tests... Wish me luck!!

Paul, You are making good progress. The tub looks like it is cleaning up, but Gosh, I know how difficult it can be to get that scale off of the tub.

Be sure not to press hard on that rubber covering for the water pressure switch. I learned the hard way, and it cracked. Yours looks like it is still in very good condition.

The racks look in good shape too.

I hope when you do a water test, that you do not have a bad water pump bearing. You will know it if water drips or flows out of the thin silver tube underneath the pump.

Mike
