I want so badly to save the Frigidaire Flair range that came in the l962 completely unmolested mid century home I just bought last month.

Both ovens work, all the lights work but the four burners don't and neither does the clock, (btw, the clock isn't a biggie at this time).

I know not a thing about ranges however, a friend looked underneath and said that one wire to a burner is missing and another one looks like it had shorted out as it is discolored.
He mentioned something about two saftey switches on either side of the cooktop in the back.

Do I have a chance in hell of ever bringing it back to all its glory?

Drop those doors , Hon !

That looks like it might be the same one I have. It's been a long time since I hadit in in use, but I'm sure at least two burners worked; it's all yours!!

Dick, that Flair is just beautiful! It looks so well cared for. I'm no expert for sure but I'm betting that it can be saved without to much trouble.

The safety switches prevent the surface units from operating if the cooktop is not in the out position. Make sure that the cooktop is fully out and locked into position before deciding that nothing works. Since the safety switches are in the circuit for the surface units, they could have been damaged when the one unit shorted. I would be willing to bet it was the Speed Heat unit that failed. It's all fixable if you can find someone willing to work on it, but if it was the Speed Heat unit that failed, it might have taken the switch with it. In that case, you will have to replace the switch with a regular infinite heat switch. If, by some miracle the Speed Heat switch is still working, you must baby it. Do not start it on HIGH. Only start it on Simmer until you hear it click. Then turn the heat higher. The control operates by throwing 230 volts across a 115 volt element for a metered amount of time. On high, it will operate at 230 until the unit is red hot, usually about a minute. Doubling the voltage increases the wattage by 4 so a 1500 watt element is operating at 6000 watts while on 230. You can see how that is stressful. On lower settings, it is on 230 for shorter periods of time and it greatly prolongs the life of the element and the control not to stress it by starting it on HIGH

Beautiful kitchen; I love the cabinets. Interesting how there are three racks for each oven. You can never scour those chrome liners. Once you scratch chrome, it's there for good.

One work of warning. Be very careful of anything you place on the brushed chrome (not stainless steel) cover that rolls out over the cooktop. I know of someone who was cleaning his humidifier and set the plastic bottle of cleaner down on that part of his Flair. The acid in the cleaner went down through the chrome to the brass underneath it and left a circle in brushed chrome finish.

Flair and Speed Heat

estatesale_gary's profile picture
There is a very large following for the Frigidaire Flair. Check out the Google group via the link below. You should be able to network out and find just about anything that you need.

Regarding the Speed Heat switch - many of these switches were taken out years ago and replaced with conventional switches as these switches were very expensive to replace. If that is the case, make sure you look at the switch and the element.

I have a 58 Frigidaire Custom Imperial range. Took me nearly a year to find a NOS Speed Heat switch. Make sure that your Speed Heat element is also good. A shorted element will take out the switch.

EstatesaleGary, my aunt had just the problem you described with her speed heat element, the repair guy put in a regular switch, just as you said. Her Flair was purchased in 1956. I would think in the days before microwave ovens, speed heat was a dream come true to warm a hungry infants formula bottle at 4 AM. Here is a link to one in the Memphis area $100. Looks in pretty good shape. alr2903

TYPO?

Flairs were not available in 1956; 1966, maybe?

Mainly range manufacturers with heavier elements used speed heat switches and elements; like Westinghouse Corox units and Frigidaire Radiantube units, to name two of several brands. There might have been a thin tube Chromalox "Flasher" unit, but with thinner tubes, the high wattage elements could glow red in about the same time on HIGH as a Radiantube Speed Heat unit without putting 230 volts across a 115 volt unit. GE and Hotpoint high wattage Calrod units heated fast and did not store as much heat in the material of the surface unit itself but sent it into the pan bottom and ultimately lasted longer.

Tom no typo, she said 1956, keep in mind she is now 92. So I would agree with you. But late 1950 something. I am a 1959, and it's the only stove i remember her ever having. alr2903

Just love the house but you want to know something-----I'm still having problems with beginning the dismantling process on the rooms in my little cabin that I've called home for so many years. And disconnecting all my washers.

How would you replace one of these eye-level stoves that is built-in and sits on top of the cabinets? What would you replace it with?
(The sanme would apply to Tappan Fabulous 400,Kenmore Classic,GE Americana, etc.)

Inside freezer door

I'm curious about the inside of the freezer door. It looks like it has four vertical dividers, and the middle two are adjustable. What would this be used to store, I wonder?

It doesn't look like the right size for frozen juice containers. Maybe half-gallon boxes of ice cream would fit perfectly? Maybe it would hold boxes of frozen vegetables, laid flat? Interesting!

Post# 435365 , Reply# 31   5/14/2010 at 22:16 (5,104 days old) by Dick_S. ()
replacing eye level range

Well, if it EVER came down to moving out the Flair and replacing it with another built in, I guess the bottom cabinet on which the Flair rests at the present time would have to be taken out as there would be no similar replacement available unless it would be another Flair or comparable unit from that era.

As I write this, the Flair is sitting in many pieces on the flagstone in the family room. My friend took it apart last weekend and tested it. He thinks it doesn't need all that much and is coming back this weekend to put it back together and see if the burners will fire up. He tested both saftey switches and says they are both fine. So....................I can't wait for tomorrow.

Oh, and about that freezer door-I would say it depends on what the owner needs to store in the door. Because two are adjustable-any sort of variations are possible. That's just the way I look at it.

speed burner

As of last weekend, there are now three burners working on the Flair. Only the speed burner is still out.
As a few members suggested that it might be a good idea to change out the speed burner with another infinite heat burner along with a new control switch--I've decided that is what I want to do.
NOW, the burning question is--Is the speed burner unit and a infinite heat burner unit one in the same???? Or is one a 220 burner and the other a 110 burner???
The Frigidaire manual gives them the same part number but is that a mistake or what?
I hope Tom Turbomatic sees this post.

Your house looks like something I saw at the Seattle Worlds Fair in 1962. I think it was a house of the future type of thing in the GM pavillion.

Your home is very nice. I'm willing to bet that you are happy it is still in it's original shape. A lot of people would have torn out all that mid century design and updated it. But I think your's looks great as it is!

Oh, and Tom, think nothing of it.

The only thing that Chris still might have some little doubt about is if the speed heat burner itself has to be changed out when the new "replacement" switch that takes the place of the old speed heat control switch is put in.

We've been told repeatedly that it doesn't have to be changed out. Would just like to hear your thoughts.

More pics to follow showing progress being made in move in future weeks.

Hi, If anyone needs parts for this model flair,I just parted one out. speed heat burner was bad,and not useable. most other parts available.THIS MODEL HAS A FUSE PROTECTING SPEED HEAT SWITCH!! fuse is inside behind control panel. I can be reached@: wclute14067@yahoo.com Thanks,Walt

The Flair can be pulled & locked with only the two front surface units out, there is a cut out switch that prevens the back two from working in this position. I have three Flairs, one in storage & two hooked up, on one, both the speed heat & heat minder work perect, the other, speed heat works fine but indicator light is shorted & stays on all the itme, heat minder never worked but most of then don't, it's the control, not the unit going out. by the way, does yours have the rotisserie in it? It was an option & rare.

Hey Walt-good to know about parts for the Flair. Mine is working like a top right now but I will certainly keep your info in mind. Thanks.

Patrick-The fridge now has a new thermostat and is working just fine. Thanks for asking. Chris looked at the original one thinking he might be able to fix it and put it back on to keep it more original but to no avail. At least the refrigerator is cooling and cycling properly.

Terry, the house is coming along nicely and pix will follow. Not that many pix have been taken lately as there has just been too much going on. ((--:: Had to take time out the other day and bake an apricot pie. The right oven (the large one) did a wonderful job and is only off about 12-13 degrees. The pie was so good I had to make another one! Now to try out the left one.

Yes, the two front burners work when the cooktop is pulled out only halfway BUT I don't have the rotisserie option. I am so please with the working unit that I'm not even bothered by that.

Once again, thanks for all the kind words of support and to Blondie-I appreciate the link and your thoughtfulness and NO you were not too late. It's always good to have thse to refer to.

Well, the house is ready to move into. The only thing that has not been done is selecting the vintage color scheme/s, trim color and painting the outside. Any ideas??? ((--::

I am still totally excited about this house and how grandly it represents the "period" I love BUT I do have a big problem with this move. I guess to make this short and sweet, I am having a huge problem moving out of the "cabin" I've called home for the last 23 years. Now I know that is crazy but the more I think about the move, the more I dig in my heels and lean more toward staying in the cabin. This daily emotional turmoil for the last four months is starting to make me sick and I can't reach a decision how ever hard I try. I'm evening thinking of seeking the help of a therapist. This is totally weird behavior and thinking on my part and I'm nuts for not wanting to move into such a great period house.

Have any of you gone thru something similar to this, and if so, what have you done to relieve and correct it.

Your moving anxiety probably is due to the fact that this new house is just that. A house. The cabin has been your HOME!!!

Yes, I've had....

..that exact thought running thru my mind quite often since I became the caretaker of the house-that I have been so fortunate and lucky as to become just that! I will be moving in shortly and most likely everything will start falling into place and I will stop missing the cabin so terribly.

I am now out scouting and searching for furniture for the house. I have been told just to take up my furniture from the cabin on a temporary basis while I look for "period" pieces but I can't see any merit in going to all that work. Man, danish modern is totally out of sight when it comes to cost but I am finding pieces in the most funky little shoppes and out of the way places. Since the picture of the DR I've attached was taken I have found a side buffet and am thus finished with the DR and moving on to he living room and Master BDR.

Terry, I think of what you wrote and will try to look at this move in that light. I just hope this all works as this is the kind of house I've dreamed of all my life.

I have followed this thread since you posted the first pictures of the Flair, and it has just got more and more interesting. Personally I think your home looks beautiful and I hope that I will have the chance to do something similar in my lifetime.

My advice would be to take it slow rather than rush to get everything done as a piece. To my (largely uneducated) eye the dining room set looks in keeping with the style of the house and I would say that you are entirely on the right track checking out smaller places and building things up gradually. That way you can appreciate each new piece as it arrives, and gradually build up the same feeling that you had for your cabin, as everything will come with your own "story" - just like the Flair has already done. And if the cost of the pieces is modest, well if you decide something is not quite right then you can easily change it.

I wish you good luck with the rest of the project and look forward to seeing more pictures as it goes along. And thank you for sharing it with us.

Al

Dick,

The new dining room set looks great. It sure looks like the house is coming along quite well. I like what Vacbear58 says about taking your time to find just the pieces you want and like without rushing to fill every room at once.

Great to see some more shots, that Kenmore set looks AMAZING. Did you have those already or buy them for the house. And the great record player (in the UK it would be known as a "radiogram" or in your case "stereogram") too. Do you have many records still?

I am convinced that this whole project was "meant" for you. I am sure it really is a labour of love (and maybe at times hard labour) but you are doing such a great job of it. Keep the pictures coming please when you have the time.

Wow ! Very impressive place. I am so glad you were able to find a good repair man and have your Flair fixed. Beautiful refrigerator too and those pink ladies look gorgeous. I really dig your groovy console stereo as well and would love to see a photo of the turntable close up. Congratulations on what promises to be a fantastic new chapter of your life. Good on ya man.

I am happy for you and your new home. It is a dream house and your taste in restoring and accessorisizing makes it even better. More than all that, is opening a new chapter in your life and embracing flexibilty to make new friends and nest with a community. I know you will be sought out because you are such a kind, loving and interesting fellow. When you have time post more, its fun to see the pictures.

Yes Al, I've had the "pink ladies" since 2007. The washer was only a "cabinet shell" when it arrived. I found all the parts for the orginal 57 and made a new wiring harness from scratch and put her back together again. The dryer was found in Missouri by another member who alerted me. They both run super.

Oh, and you asked about my record collection. I still have the first record I purchased in SF way back in the very early 50s when I was a young boy! In other words, I have zillions of 33s, 45s, and 78s and I still love pulling them out and listening to them!

I'll be listing more pics soon and thanks everyone for your continued interest. And Kelly, it was so nice to hear from you.

A closeup pic of the Garrard turntable in the Packard Bell. It has a floating cartridge and NOT a floating head as I mistakenly stated in an earlier post. The cartidge is in surprising good condition. I won't have to replace it.

It plays very well and will recognize a 7 inch and 10 inch record but won't recognize a 12 inch when used in automatic record changing mode.

Thanks Rick and Brian.

I will venture an educated guess your machine is about a 1963 or 64 vintage. I bet that it could be made to work correctly again with just a thorough and deep internal lubrication. Thanks for showing it.

My flairberry pie

Thought I'd try a mixed berry pie in the flair as I go nuts over blackberries and raspberries. Well, I was out of crisco and didn't have enough butter to make the crust but my neighbor was very obliging offering me some Farmer John lard. Well, I made the pie and took the whole thing to a friend's house yesterday. By chance we took the first bite at the same time and we both looked at each other. I think it's the best pie curst I've ever made. It melts in your mouth!

I thought of forgeting about crisco and just using lard until a friend told me that is a big no no and that my arteries would be clogged worse than they are now. I finally made the flakiest pie crust I've been trying to make all these years and am now told that it's not a healthy choice. What a shame.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can achieve a very flaky crust without making the pie totally unhealthy?

Hey, any chance of getting a close up of the panel on that lonely washer off in the corner in the post above the pie (that looks very good too...)?

I've been enjoying your "journey" to your new home and all the things you've done with it. Keep the pictures coming!

Blard or Lutter

Dick the pie is perfection and shows what an artistic Flair you have X2. If you use Crisco brand shortening and a European butter with higher fat in a blend of 2/3 shortening and 1/3 butter you should have a flaky and short crust that will melt in your mouth. I am so impressed with your house and am just as hungry for pictures as I am your pie.

Post# 473303 , Reply# 80   11/3/2010 at 22:02 (4,931 days old) by Dick_S. ()

Kelly-Many thanks for your kind words (always) and your tip for the pie crust. First time I ever heard about European butter -- and the higher fat content. I will certainly try it Kelly and let you know. In my little circle of friends, I'm sort of known for my pies and I'm always striving to make them better. Thank you,

And congrats on your new home. I can't wait to see pictures of it and of course I will be posting updated ones of mine. Take care my friend.

And Matti-I've posted a pic that shows a closer up image of the panel. Let me know if its okay. It was listed as a 53 when it was for sale but I do believe it is a 54. It runs great (sudsaver and all) but has developed a little leak in the discharge hose which will have to be recreated and will take more than a little effort to change out. So.....for the time being the leak is under control and will stay that way for awhile.

Post# 473318 , Reply# 81   11/4/2010 at 00:35 (4,931 days old) by MattL (Flushing, MI)

Thank You! That is a beauty!

One last question or two --does the panel light up and is the tub lit? This is the closest I've seen to the washer I recall from when I was a little kid. I recall the black dial with a back light, the temp selection with various color lights and the germicidal lamp in the tub.

I've seen some that came close in others collections here, but this looks like the same model my folks had. It was a suds saver too.

What a great looking house. It has a fireplace similar to what was in our house but the previous owner removed. As well it had the planters at the front foyer and she removed and covered those.. I'll have them put back some day. You're so fortunate to have found the place intact and not ruined like ours.
Coincidentally it looks like that yellow wall color is almost the same as what our previous owner chose to paint when we bought it. I found it made the house to0 dark inside and had it all repainted universal gray this past year.. what a huge improvement. It goes really well with "modern"

Post# 475379 , Reply# 84   11/15/2010 at 21:49 (4,919 days old) by Dick_S. ()

Hi Matti-You are right on all counts. The temp selections light up, the tub, and there are two bulbs behind the black cycle modifier dial and the light seems to follow and illuminate the pointer as it clicks off the minutes and moves toward the end of the cycle.

Yes, the wall hangings are wood.

Just got around to the fireplaces yesterday and had both chimneys inspected. One was fine and the other needed cleaning. I was told I wasn't going to get much heat out of the "insert" in the living room but was I surprised yesterday when I built a fire in it, turned on those fans that are built into it, and sat back. The heat is unbelievable and will be most welcome over the next four month period. Now on to the pot bellied stove in the family room.

You are so right about that yellow wall color. I agree most wholeheartedly with you--I truely believe it makes the surrounding areas dark but it will have to stay for the time being.

I plan on taking a new batch of pics to show update of what I've done. I will start putting them up soon. There is still a lot to do but will be slowing down here to take in the holidays and enjoy family in the new house.---

Hi Dick. I`am a fairly new member, and I just wanted to let you know that I have enjoyed your journey thru the posts and pics, you have a beautiful collection, and I was happy to see that everything turned out O.K for you, and the Flair, but how is the fridge doing? Is it still running without cycling off? . Stan

Hi Stan- Thanks for asking about the refrigerator. It is running fine now and cycling on and off. I couldn't find any info on the machine or anyone who knew anything about this particular model so I got my hands on a "generic" "one fits all" thermostat and bypassed the old one. Everything is fine at this point. The only thing that amazes me is the small capacity of the unit, especially the refrigerator section. I can't fit that much in it. Granted, I grew up in the same era and in a rather sizeable family. I don't know how my Mom managed.

Pie Crust!

Pay no attention to the health nuts...if it tastes good, its probably bad for you, My next door neighbor where I grew up has 2 eggs and a slice of fried fatback every morning...She still lives by herself and turned 100 in August!!!I truthfully, dont use lard, but it does make flaky pastry,My Grandmothers recipe is wonderful...but it is hard to handle..
Sift together
3 cups plain flour
1 tsp salt
cut in 1 1/4 cups crisco
mix and add
1 egg
1 Tbsp water
1 Tbsp vinegar
Flaky, tender, but also very hard to handle.

Hi Dick. Oh good I was hoping the fridge would be O.K glad to hear it was only the thermostat. I noticed the the freezer was sort of small by todays standards too, but with something that beautiful who cares right? My mother did`nt have a refrigerator til I was born (two older brothers) so she would have committed highway robbery to have had one to have to manage, that was that nice! No washer either, she had a top of the line washboard made out of thick glass, LOL. Keep up the good work. Stan

The holidays

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas. Haven't posted in while as I have been so busy I only have time every now and then to check in to see what is going on. I really miss my old "every other day or so" schedule but hopefully one of these days it will come back. ((--::

Thanks norgeway for the crust recipe. No I haven't tried it yet but it is on my list. I do now use the food processor which does totally cut down on the work and doesn't really alter the flakiness of the crust. At least I don't think it does.

I know it's a reproduction (but I don't care)! Here is one thing I got as a gift for the house. I love it and it will look great when it is hung above the chesterfield.

Warmest wishes to everyone for a wonderful happy and healthy 2011!!!!!!!!

Looks like a perfect '60's house. Great work. Don't know if you have any historic preservation groups in your area but soon you could qualify as a historic property. It is great to see someone buy an 'older' house and not immediately throw everything out. Here in Cape May the first thing people do is gut the house and turn it into something it was never meant to be. Fortunatly they cannot change the outside of the Victorians even thought some would like to tear them down and put up McMansions.

Another shot of the master bath and the original (I do believe) plastic pull curtain to cover the frosted window. The M/B also has a slider in it which is kind of nice. It opens out to another patio in the front of the house.

I'm not taken with the aqua color as there is too much blue in it. I want more pastel green tint in it.

Thanks Rick-I'm sure having a good time with the house. So nice to hear from you.

Harry-funny you mention that as some time ago the town chamber of commerce hinted that I consider making it into a B and B.

The master bedroom....

....Spotted this dresser and two night tables almost buried in the sand along side the road on my way home thru the upper desert outside of Lucerne Valley. The Silverado came to an "almost" immediate halt and they all jumped on.

It took a little doing in cleaning them up but they did so nicely. At least I think so.

Dick your inherent good taste, attention to detail and hard work are making a museum quality home.  Now, sand the old bug a boos in your head and give the reisitance to moving a good scrub.  Move in the house and you can still go to the hills to hang out with the old days, but embrace the new for all our sakes.  This is crazy making to see such a fabulous sit empty waiting for your sunshine to brighten it up.

Easter Reserrection

Dick, my Flair was trashed by the time dinner was on the table. I did a Leg of Pork in the small oven, measuring it to be sure before I bought it. There was a 22 pound Turkey in the big oven. I have no idea what went on while I was at church, but the turkey, nested well within the confines of it's roaster, shot a puddle of fat in one corner of the oven. When he turkey was ready, it came out to bake the Vasileopita (Toggles, please correct the spelling) while I mashed the tropic blend potatoes, onions, garlic, apples, sweet potatoes and white potatoes. The onions wrap around the beaters turning them into clubs which spatter orange glop everywhere. In the last hurrah of pulling stuffing, steaming asparagus, thickening the gravy and carving the Turkey and Pork some one rolled the stone away to reveal a Flair covered head to foot with every kind of culinary overspray. While guests were filling their plates all the pans were washed, the stove wiped down and the burners stowed. Like any veteran Flair owner, I killed the oven lights so no one would see inside. After the guests went home, I pulled the glides and racks and sent them through the dish washer while the oven got polished with SOS and Windex. By morning it looked no worse for wear. I am gratified to see a Sunbeam mashing the potatoes.

OMG Kelly....

....what did you do? Bring home the entire church congregation for Sunday dinner?? ((--:: From what you write makes me think I was at the wrong house for Easter dinner. (Yes, I will always remember that beautiful dinner you put out back in '06)And washing all the pots and pans before sitting down to dinner? Now I'm a total believer in washing and cleaning up as I cook and go but when the food is served I'm right in that chow line to get some along with everyone else and take my seat and enjoy the fruits of my labor. And when dinner is over I've got a bunch in that kitchen helping on clean up detail and another bunch helping to wrap up and put everything away. Of course I'm right in the middle. ((--::

I used to LOVE to put on dinner parties like you do and if I say so myself, I was quite good at it. But most of us change with time and I must say that I am one of those who now keep things simple BUT always very nice and very pleasant. I had five at the table and that was plenty. Time usually changes all and I must say that I've slowed down quite a bit lately. Being on the short side of 70 has had a lot to do with it I believe!

Washed the Pots?

We had 22, mostly family for Easter dinner.  14 sat in the dining room and the remainder at the breakfast table in the great room.  There's a center island which held a walk though buffet.  It allowed me to clean up the pots and clear the counter to lay out the desserts.  I would have been last through the line last regardless.  The guests did load the dishwasher and stack the excess plates.  It is very casual here in the barn made into a house.

It is good to see you at home in your new home, Dick.  I wish my Flair was in as good a shape as your's but there's always one more over the horizon waiting to be found.

Thanks to you both....

.....for your nice comments and wishes. The house just keeps growing on me and friends and I are constantly looking for more "period" pieces to furnish it with. I've been having lots and lots of company lately and entertaining them all in the house has just been a breeze. More like fun than a chore which it has been at times in the past. And cooking is delightful on the Flair. Gave it a good workout two weekends ago with a 24 pounder and various casserole side dishes baking in both ovens and numerous foods in pans on burners, all at the same time. Oh, and I musn't forget the pies. The stove was going all day long and just took it in stride.

I'm just amazed........

...at what I'm gathering together in my "travels" for the new place. And much to my surprise I find I'm not alone in this venture. I have come to realize that a number of my friends also share my passion and are calling me with items they've come across that they think will compliment my home. And they do!

My dear friend Cheryl who I "adopted" as a sister years ago came back from Wyoming with an item that I couldn't believe. It looks great in the master bedroom and to think she carted it all the way down here for my place. I consider that something. And a picture will be "forthcoming" as I just realized I left the camera at the other place! What a dunce I can be at times! ((--::

.....what my dear Cheryl found in a thrift store 1800 miles from here, thought it would fit into the "period" theme I am doing with the house and hauled it back home. Needs a little sanding and staining but otherwise it is fabulous. She is on another trek right now and I can't wait to see what she brings back this time.

Love Comes From the Most Unexpected Places

Dick, this thread gets more exciting with each new pictured acquisition.  Once people and things come into your healing power and touch they are transformed, just like this house that is now a home because you're in it.  I know the past months have taken a toll on your body. The emotional drain on the psyche from care giving is mind numbing at best.  It makes me feel better knowing you have this oasis and sanctuary for your own renewal and to invite your closest circle in for your TLC.  This home has become a vehicle for you to continue your life long gift of nurture, encouragement and love.  You are the brightest light in a desert filled with light.  This project allows you to massage and heal the wood into it's once glowing patina but to also use one of your machines.  Like an artist you will create a new canvas (literally) for the chair to occupy a place of pride in a house filled with spectular artifacts of the Mid Century.  Rest with in and without and be ready to live this house to it's fullest.

So Dick, are you tired of hearing people tell you that you're living in their ideal Palm Springs dream home?  Because is sure it that to me!

Our next door neighbors had a similar Philco fridge when I was a kid.  I think it was a little older than yours.  It had a pedal to open the freezer door but I can't tell if yours does.  It seemed so huge compared to our single door '49 Westinghouse.

Just a beautiful house and a beautiful job you've done with it.

Thought I'd keep posting....

....items of interest that are going in the house. Like this Voice of Music portable phonagraph. I had one just like it when I was a kid back in the 50s. The button in the lower right corner of the face is of interest. When records are playing and the lid is closed, you can push on it to reject the record curently playing and start a new one playing. I think that's neat.

You are right Ralph. The rather large freezer compartment on the bottom has a foot release lever but the flat ribbed part your foot rests on to push open the door is broken off. I welcome thoughts and suggestions on how to remedy this situation. I also need to put a new door seal on both doors but as far as it working -- it works great. I love it.

And Kelly-once again, thanks for your nice thoughts. ((--::

And by no means....

...could I ever forget to take along my GE tube combo unit that I purchased new in 1963. It works well but does need to be taken apart and all contacts given a good cleaning. The old record players are great for playing my 78 rpm records.

I love those GE systems, I had a GE console with the VM changer instead of Garrard, and it had that same (wrist-action) tone arm and record overarm. I wish I still had it. The TOL GE portables seem popular on eBay.

I can't stop....

....hauling home things I tell myself I can't live without. I think I have a problem! I swear, everytime I go out "browsing" in thrift stores and garage sales, which I tell myself is just for fun-something to while away a few hours, I come home with the truck bed at least one third filled. (The other day it was a full truck load of old vacuums.)

But for now, it looks like one of the bedrooms will soon have a "theme", and that will be "The Phonograph Room".

I just brought home another GE combo. It appears to be around a 65 or 66 model and transistorized. The changer is not a Garrard and it doesn't work but the radio works perfectly.

It's just so much fun bringing home old linens, dishware, records, furnitures, old 50ls, etc., etc., I guess this is just a part of me and I'll never stop until the day I die.

Now, I have to focus on a color scheme for the exterior of the house. I want colors to make the house really stand out and alert everyone passing by that it is there.

I'll bet it is so fun to look at the glass doors and stainless steel every time you walk into that kitchen.

Yes, Patrick...

....I am glad you brought that up. I am needing to focus on that issue next as things will come to a standstill if I dont't have the back of the guest house closed in so I can line up and display my "chosen" washers out there. The washers are house presently in the three adjoining room of the guest house which I will need free when I start setting the rooms up with things from the cabin. It's going to be so much fun out there in the guest house with all the washers in a big room behind it.

I seem to be moving in a lot of different directions lately and not concentrating on what is important. Did I really need to run off and buy that Easy Spindrier last Monday? ((--::

For Cleaning Your Contacts And Pots

Look for Blue Shower II in search. Don't know if it's still acceptable to be used everywhere anymore or not. Has CFC's in it but works well. Don't get it on certain plastics, paints or back painted translucent glasses. It can remove the finish, but cleans really well.

Replace the lubricant the Blue Shower takes out with Caig DeoxIt lubricant. There's several different kinds. The gold kind has gold particles in it to help rebuild scarred pots. There's also regular lubes and cleaners too. You might be able to get everything in one place so you wouldn't have double orders. Or if you're near by a big electronics parts store you might be able to pick it up yourself.

Any cleaner that removes the lubricants needs to be replaced. Don't know if you know this stuff or not. Just thought I'd offer some information.

The moving and collecting...

...is still going on but now it's coming time to cease all that and start preparing for those wonderful holidays. The house is coming along just fine but I still am searching for more old wall hangings and period art.

Here's something I spotted in a friend's garage just gathering dust. In fact there are two of them (different styles tho') I brought home and he was thankful they are out of his garage. Little does he know!!! Yes, I know that two of the boomarangs are not all there but it still makes a nice lamp for the living room. I found the globes on ebay. The three of them only cost me a dollar! What memories I'm forming in trying to furnish this home!

I've been quite busy the last couple of weeks to ensure that the house is festive and happy for the 2011 holidays. Last year the holidays weren't all that they usually are so this year I'm making up for last year's loss.

The tree is live and will be planted when I finally decide to take all the ornaments off of it. Guess I'm funny but I seem to enjoy the tree and all the decorations AFTER the holidays a bit more than before.

Just about time to say good-bye

Just want to say how much I have appreciated all your comments about my new place during the run of this thread which has been rather long. I am constantly adding and doing things to the house which I'd love everyone to see (especially my old vintage cars at the house) but I'm thinking there might be another way to do this. (I am sure that Robert will heave a sigh of relief when this thread finnaly bites the dust!((--:: I do think he's been quite patient with its lengthy run.

Sometime soon I will look into one of these sites that store personal photos like phot bucket and Picasso. I plan to post already existing photos plus new ones showing my never ending progress in making this "dream home" of mine a reality.

I will certainly let you know when such a thing occurs.

....that a lot of you enjoy my little updates on this house I never thought I'd ever have in my lifetime and want you all to know that I will keep on posting until, well..........! Thank you all for your support and encouragement.

I thought I'd have more things at this time to show you that I have come upon since the first of the year for the house. But sadly the only thing that has arrived so far is the model 12 Sunbeam. I still can't believe that just a short time ago such a beautiful mixer arrived literally in pieces. I'm sure hoping that I will be able to find a black 12 speed modifier or another small/large bowl change lever which also broke off in the mail. AND both bowls arrived shattered! Picture is attached.

Still in the mail is an aqua melmac set and JC Penny and Fieldcrest pastel blue, yellow and seafoam mint green percale sheets and pillowcases right out of the 50s and still in their original plastic wrappers! I go nuts over those pastel colors.

More to come. ((--::

Good to hear that you will keep us updated :)

And such a shame about the Mixmaster - still you are in the right place for spare parts and the bowls will be easily replaced. I will not go into a rant here about packaging, but I had the same thing happen to me just before Christmas so I know just how disappointed you must feel over that. Still at least the bed linens cant get broken - just the thing for your vintage washers :)

I just saw this post and can't believe another ebay shipment gone wrong. I have had the same thing happen when ordering highly breakable items that weren't packed well enough. I used to send a note to the seller to ask them to please pack carefully and have had mixed results. Once the seller said I didn't need to even mention it as they shipped highly breakable items all the time. That set the stage because the item arrived cracked and broken even though it was wrapped well in bubble wrap.

Sorry this happened to you Dick and hope the seller will refund your money.

Mixer Parts

Dick, I have any part you need and extra bowls in white. Email me your address and I'll send you the parts you need. Robert downloaded a Sunbeam repair manual for models 10, 11 and 12 and you can access it if you have an upgraded membership.

Wanted this pic to be different....

...like Al said--just the thing (50s pastel sheets) for those old washers of yours. I wanted to picture these being pulled down an around by one of those big old roto swirls but am excited at their arrival so a group shot of them all in their original pastic bags with the Penney's sheets displaying a price tag of $2.98 for a Pencale double pastel colored sheet. They fit amazingly well on a queen size bed. Now that I have them, I want to open and wash and use only a couple at a time and save a few packed away for the future. Man, will I ever learn.

And a load of thanks to Kelly who is sending me all the parts for the Mixmaster. I'm so glad that it will soon be mixing up a storm in the kitchen.

And now I wait for the aqua Melmac!

OKay, one of my.......

..baby's is up at the house. A 69 442 convertible that believe it or not, I bought new in San Francisco in 69! There is quite a story behind the car (and a hell of a lot of memories) and for those of you who by chance saw it at the cabin, well......
I parked it at the cabin in 1986 with the top down and it was not cranked over again until October 2009. It sat all those years with the little critters having their way with it, (eating the wiring, the seats, the top, right down to the glove box cardboard insert!
I wanted to do something special that I'd remember back on that year to mark my 65th B-day so I took three days, shoveled out all the critter stuff (three lg garbage cans full) and had it towed to town where a friend and I worked on it and got it running again. It still needs a lot done to it cosmetically (it is still totally original) but mechanically it is to the point that it will cruise at 80 on the I-10 and still want to get up and go. It sure doesn't feel like it already has 265,000 on it that I put on in a rather short span of years--69 to the early 80s.
Yes Stan, I did remember. ((--::

Dick, I have watching your progress on the house. It is very similar to the house we had in St.Pete in the late 50's. Great look. I even had the same stereo console! My bro had the 442, his was a hardtop. I am having trouble believing your being truthful about your age, you look terrific! If you ever get to GA or Oz Campground, look me up, I'll buy you a BDay cocktail (oh, I can also spit shine your boots if you'd like!)

Thanks for remembering, and as promised I'l show you a pic of mine, as soon as it stops pouring down rain up here, and I can get out to photograph it. Keep up the good work! Started to think.....

....that just maybe I was beginning to carry my fascination with the 50s and 60s a little too far until I recently saw a segment on just that on TLC. It gave me a real shot (of renewed enthusism and gusto) in the arm NOW I just might be well on my way to becoming the male counter-part to Doris Mayday! I think she's fabulous! AND I've got the 55 Chevy parked outside.

Can't believe that at this point in my life I am bringing so many things I grew up with and couldn't care less about back into my life. The picture I'm posting shows only a small part of it, but I've now got enough Melmac to sink a battle ship! On to other things. Now it's Corning Centura white coupe I'm after. I think the e=bay police should arrest me and lock up my account for a good six months until I recover my senses. I'm sure you all saw another thread I posted about the aqua Sunbeam Mixmaster I got, again arriving with smashed bowls and speed dial. Now I'm after a Sunbeam vacuum coffee maker-I guess a C-50 which I hear is the largest capacity of them all.

Cuffs-thanks for your nice comment and YES, maybe someday I just might take you up on that B-Day drink! And that's a threat! ((--::

Stan-I look forward to seeing your vintage car when you get the chance to snap a pic or two. I know how that rain is in N. Cal. being a native of SF and being raised in Marin. How I wish some of that rain could come down my way!

I took a chance on this C-50

and I do think I lucked out. It runs super. However, the bottom pot has a few coffee stains in it that I have tried repeatedly to remove with vinegar and baking soda. I have met with no success although I remove a bit with each treatment. I just found DipIt in a hardward store and am going to try it. I sure hope it works.

My dear friend Patrick (p-dub) spent a week with me after we both attended Kevin's wonderful washin and he was the major player in getting this fabulous GE 12# mini tub machine in fabulous operating condition once again. I have the matching dryer.

Stan, you were right...

....DipIt cleaned the pot! I was really surprised. I thought it might take a bit out BUT it cleaned the pot beautifully. It sure made a believer out of me. The pot now makes a very fine, robust cup of coffee. Now of course, it won't be used as a daily driver with the amount of coffee I consume in a day but used for those "special times".

Something I must share with you.

I had a dear lady friend who passed away 3 years ago. For years and years on most afternoons after work you could find us sitting in her dining roon drinking coffee, smoking and solving all the problems of the world. We'd talk food, recipes, sewing techniques. everything under the sun! She was so much fun to be around.

Well, her middle daughter Tina came up to the house recently with these big bags in tow. She said that her Mom would really be happy knowing I had all her things that were in the bags. Among other great things mostly from her kitchen was all her old 50s tupperware containers in assorted sizes round and square with the aqua, yellow, blue, etc., colored tops! I treasure them and they live on already being used in my kitchen. Thank you my dear Carole.

By all means

I plan to drop by that hardware store and pick up a few more packages of it just to have on hand. It is becoming scarce around here although I'm sure I could still find it online if I tried.

I did come to realize after using it in the C50, that from now on I will adhere to the instructions. They say that after the brewing cycle ends you should leave the pot sit for 15 minutes and then discard the contents and rinse well. I decided to leave the pot sit for a bit longer (that it couldn't hurt as the pot was quite dirty) and when I finally discarded the liquid I could see that there were two small spots that looked like they were beginning to "eat" through the top plating in the pot. Hmmmmmm. But alas, by luck I guess, I emptied it before any serious damage had resulted. I won't do that again. Whatever is in that stuff must be pretty caustic BUT it does work well!

The house has seen considerable company over the last couple of months and now things are quieting down as the summer approaches and the temperatures start rising. I'm anticipating a long, lazy summer without much action. Let's see if I'm right! ((--::

it the diligence and care that you have put into your house over the last two years! I have always loved the mid-century stuff-even though I arrived in the mid-sixtys. My family was frugal enough to have much of that still around in the 1970's when most of my memories start.

I have really enjoyed reading through this thread and it is my pleasure to bump it up again! All the best!

I'm trying to tell myself that everything...

...happens for a reason. After two yars plus of having the most wonderful time with this home it looks like I am about to run into a snag mwith the city and the installation of sewers. I am hearing horror stories from people who have already gone thru such an ordeal and I don't know if I want to deal with all the added extremely high expenses, monthly hookup charges, the devastation to the landscaping, etc., etc.. Thus I'm saddened as of this writing with possible thought of selling the home. I comfort myself in knowing that if I do go thru with giving up the home, at least I experienced a most wonderful time in having it as long as I did.

Washerman-thanks for your input and I do admire that Danish Modern console. Very nice.

I'm still thinking about that video!

I hope you have already exhausted all alternatives to having to give up, and sell/move your home!
Don't really know you, but somehow also have a feeling that this is, or was a huge stretch for you to settle into THIS house, let alone to have to do it again... unless your the adventurous type... don't get the" feeling" you are (I'm not)
The landscape will grow back!
Are you sure there is no other way to work it out ?

Dick, I'll bet you are hearing most of these "horror stories" from people that live up in Cathedral City Cove. I have several friends in that area that went through the change from septic to sewer a few years ago. Most of them say the ugly part was the 2 years of construction...streets dug up, yards tunneled through, etc. The expense was spread over many years. I believe it was tacked-on to the property tax bill, still an added expense but easier to stomach than one big bill. Are they offering you this option? You might want to check with the Riverside County Assessor's Office and see if your proprty has been reassessed for the approaching property tax statement. It probably has which should result is a reduced tax bill.

pie crust, septics, Flairs

Hi Dick --

I stumbled onto this thread while looking for advice on my broken Speed Heat burner and wound up reading it from start to finish. I LOVE your house and everything you've done with it. Oh to live in the Palm Springs area and be a guest at one of your dinner parties! Thought you might get a laugh at seeing my Flair, which lives in our cabin in a dusty Oregon cow town -- sort of the country cousin to your meticulously maintained beauty. Gives new meaning to the phrase Home on the Range! (Believe it or not, I once lived in an Eichler and had good taste like you!)

Re pie crust -- well, yours already looks heavenly, but I thought I'd pass along a tip I learned from my favorite 90-year-old pie baker: replace the water in the crust with vodka. The booze evaporates, resulting in an even flakier crust. (A little for the cook along the way can't hurt either)

And funny you should mention septics...we've had houseguests at our cabin for 2 weeks, and the area above our tiny tank is looking ominously green...We've been through septic miseries at our place down in Marin as well, and getting onto a community sewer system turned out to be the best thing that ever happened, well worth the year or so of being dug up. When the whole thing was finally done, we were so ecstatic, we had a parade, complete with a plunger drill team and a Septic Queen, seated on a porcelain throne. So hang in there!

Hopefully you've found answers to your speed heat burner questions. Great suggestion on the pie crust too. Sounds worth trying!

Yes Dexter, that is one place (cc the cove) where I got quite a bit of feedback about the sewer conversion the cove went thru a year or two back. One friend (usually laid back and everything taken in stride) said that if he knew that was in the wind when he bought in the cove, well, he would not have! And that speaks volumes especially coming from him.

I will be speaking to a realtor next week after I get home from a trip to Tehachapi and see what his comments are on the whole mess. Still speaking to a lot of folks up there and I must say that the general feeling is not all that good.

To Ms Flairfanatic- I really enjoyed your post and kind comments and yes, I must agree with you that a sewer system is the only way to go BUT a pre existing one, NOT a new one. I'll bet the place is tied up for a couple of years and that would do me in big time.

I don't believe I ever heard of vodka in a pie crust until I read your post and then, (possibly because it was fresh on my mind) I read about it again. I believe that Cooks Illustrated puts vodka in their pie crusts. I can't wait to try one as I bake a lot of pies and enjoy doing so. Thanks.

So funny that you mentioned Eichler homes. I used to spend a lot of time in one of those Eichlers in Lucas Valley back in 62 and 63 when I was going to COM in Kentfield. The house was great but at that time in my mind it was nothing special. NOW, OMG to live in one of those! How things change in the mind as we age or at least some of us! ((--::

You must let me know whenever you are in the PS area. Would love to show you the house, that is if I still have it. And your flair is anything but laughable- quite the contrary standing out so handsomely and dominating the corner as it does. (Love the tea kettle) And that dinette set is fabulous. Thanks again for writing.

Stan thanks for your words of encouragement and support and thanks Patrick for your positive thoughts. Hope it all turns out okay.

Dick,

I think the homeowners who attend the meetings should insist that the project be done in the least disruptive manner possible.   There are ways to mitigate or reduce the inconvenience, but unless people put pressure on the overseeing agency to take the necessary steps, they won't be forthcoming about doing so.

In the long run you'll be pleased with a sewer connection, and if you ever do consider selling you won't have the drawback of a septic system that will scare off some potential buyers.

Also, I've heard superlative comments about the vodka pie crust from a few different sources within the past year or so.  I'm all about convenience and have never had good luck with pie crust from scratch anyway, so I buy my crusts at the supermarket.  My pies would be an embarrassment otherwise.

Ralph

Stan-I do believe you hit the nail squarely on the head! How perceptive. I've seen my Doctor and I'm currently taking medication to reduce my anxieties and am to see a specialist in the area of mental stress. AND all I can say is that the house with this upcoming problem is the major factor in my discomfort. I do think that age has a lot to do with it, in fact I've been reflecting on my life and things I've gone thru in my younger years. NO WAY would I ever consider them now. I need to be enjoying life and the lovely house that I helped create. I am not doing so. Regardless of how much I love the house, my health and happiness needs to come first.

And Ralph--Thanks for your input. I have attended a few town meetings at this point. I also realize that the sewer system is very much needed for the future well being of the town, its residents and the environment. Once again, I don't know what the outcome will be. I'll keep you all posted.

I tend to think that the majority of Cathedral City Cove residents are happy now that the sewer system is up and running. I'm sure your friend has valid reasons for his unfavorable feelings for the CC Cove conversion but your experience may be very different. Is your home situated where equipment will be passing by daily or is it more isolated? It's true that a sewer connection will add to the value of your house and think of the freedom...you can flush to your heart's content. Try and relax a little and take things in stride...especially situations that you only have limited control over. Did you ever check to see if your property has been reassessed for tax purposes? It may ease the financial part of the conversion.

When the septic thing was going on here in West Marin, the never-ending meetings (where some neighbors nearly came to blows) turned out to be far worse than the actual construction phase.

Still haven't dealt with the burner problem on my Flair...pulled out the Speed Heat and found burnt-out looking wires underneath. Scary. Will be back on the board for technical assistance as soon as I'm ready to tackle this. Bigger fish to fry (but not on Speed Heat!) at the moment...including installation of a mound system SEPTIC at our cabin, as our soil has failed the perk test. Sigh.

Meanwhile, I'll keep checking in to see how things are going down your way.

And not only...

...can I flush to my heart's content as you write tweintubdexter, but I can also use clorox to my heart's content! Clorox is very hard on septics. I am taking your advice and calming down a bit here. Thanks. Will surely keep you all updated.

And to flairfanatic- I also had the same problem with my Flair and ended up changing it to a regular burner which works swell. And my friend Chris did a wonderful job of rewiring. When you are ready to attack it, I will be here to offer you any little tidbits that might be of help.

No Stan, unfortunately the work is not behind us at this point. Believe me, I wish I could say otherwise. The whole mess is becoming more convoluted with each passing day and residents are getting restless and some are becoming quite hot under the collar. The agencies handling the conversion can't seem to agree on some issues and now they are changing the boundary lines of the different phases and including more homes. I am really trying to stay positive but it is geeting harder by the week as I read about the "new" changes written about in the newspaper every couple of days. I just might end up putting it on the market and forget that damned town all together.

And yes, twintub, I do realize that. That would be the only saving grace if it came to me giving up and listing the house.

Not Happening

I can't believe this thread is two years plus old- being new here, I am finding alot for the first time.
Congratulations on all the work you did, Dick, on this home...I'd love to write more thoughts, but there's enough here in this thread to read, but just wanted to express my sincere sympathy for what you are going through. (A long-time friend of mine has G.A.D. - general anxiety disorder- that has, in his later years-we are two or three years behind you-beleaguered him. So I know a little of what you might going through.

You mentioned that you should be enjoying your life at your age(we agree) and if the house and the sewer issues are just mounting your anxieties, then it's understandable, despite all the wonderful work you put into this house(high fives), that your health must come first. I know that no matter how much support you get from people, with anxiety, you are alone...so telling you, "just hang in there", things will improve and by the way, so will the value of your property.." has less meaning when each minute and hour is challenging to deal with. I wish I could impart some magic and say that if you just hang in there, all will be better. But you have to live with you first, in calm and happiness.

Good luck , Dick - whatever you choose to do, in time, do it and don't lament, right? You don't look 65, incidentally. Wishing you the best....

(applause for the job you did on this house)

I took a little time out....

....and celebrated my 68th! I shut all my worries out of my mind, jumped in the 442 and had a wonderful day going everywhere (all 146 miles worth)! I went down on the valley floor and had lunch with friends then on south where I visited with more friends in Indian Wells and Indio. Just a lovely day to remember.

OvrphiThanks for your thoughts and comments. That is exactly what I'm planning on doing. Life is just too short to be taking on a mess like this at my age!

Will check in with you all when I hear back from a realtor I've been talking to.

twintub....

....you were right! With my focus being on the upcoming sewer system installation I was not keeping track of the real estate market. It looks like if I did consider putting the house on the market, I could stand to make a pretty penny. Still considering my options.

At the present, I have taken on a temporary (but lucrative) position 50 miles away from home and am commuting daily. I really did need to take this on for many reasons. As such, my focus has been redirected for the time being. Will keep you all informed.

My friends at Coldwell Banker tell me houses continue to increase in value each month and that properties are moving quickly since the inventory of short sales and foreclosures is rapidly drying up. The longer you keep your home the better. You may end up finding yourself on the other side of the septic-to-sewer conversion and staying put. Congrats on the new job. A 50 mile commute isn't too bad provided you're not using the Olds 442...rocket fuel is expensive.

I will have it easy this year. I will be doing the turkey, dressing, pots, yams, and rolls--friends will be bringing veggies and assortment of pies! I'm getting smart in my golden years.

Patrick- Thanks for the belated B-wishes and all the effort you put into that delicious looking cake. It looks wonderful. Everything down here is going swimmingly and I hope you are not being flooded out up there. ((--::

And yes Dexter, I hear the same thing and am beginning to quiet down.

Everyone have a wonderful day.

My hubby and I listen to vinyl over cocktails with a very similar VM phono. That thing will outlast us!
Yes, the reject button on the front is really handy, especially when listening to Yma Sumac LOL !
Can you post the model # ? I may have some service lit if you want.
And of course if you need any support on it, be sure to contact V-M Audio Enthusiasts...
Actually a picture of your unit is posted on the first page of their site.
( I was part of the gang that cleaned out that factory that ultimately ended with that new V-M website. I am not affiliated with that site but I do have lots of VM materials to share ).

Thanks so much Paulg.......

.....for your great input about Voice of Music. I have always been a fan and have really loved their changers that seem to be indistructable and just keep going and going. I had one in a Symphonic table model back in the late 50s and it ran forever.

I really like this VM table model and am really taken by it's tone and acoustic contour controls. I do think it was really a bit ahead of its time.

BTW, the model # is 557. I will be looking for a new cartridge soon.

Oh, and thanks for your nice comment on my home. I've already changed out some of the furniture and just yesterday brought home another new truckload! OMG!What am I doing.

Will take some updated pictures soon. I think you will admit that the changes only tend to enhance the home. I hope that is what you'll say! ((--::

Happy Holidays everyone

Thanks Al for your positive comment-it is much appreciated. However, there were a couple of items I had placed about the living/dining rooms that I wasn't quite happy with. I am taking pictures on Christmas and will post a few to show you what I did. I am now completely content with the new changes and will leave as is.

I also want to thank everyone who urged me to hang on. It would have been a very tramatic experience and great loss within my soul for me to sell the house at this time. I am too connected to it and love how it makes me feel when I'm in it.

Once again, a very Happy Holiday Season to you all!

See if you can find the "changes" that have been made.

On a sad note-my beautiful Philco refer is on its way out. The compressor is starting to go and it won't cycle. I hate to think of looking for another ice box and wonder if anything can be done to keep the old dear running. I assume a compressor can't be fixed but I wonder if a replacement is something I might think about. Don't know a thing about compressors.

And a wonderful, happy and very healthy Happy New Year to all.

You might want to post a new topic about it, so it will catch the eye of experts here! ( I'm not ) but have had the same thing happen with my old girl ( was not cycling ) only to find the it just needed to be recharged.
409 A was the refrigerant the appliance guy used to recharge mine.

Thanks for posting more photos, it was great to see how your home was looking over Christmas. Looking at the photos I was surprised (and impressed) to see how well it looked. Truely, it could have graced the pages of any home improvement back in the day and yet by todays standards it still looks quite fresh and modern. You have done a REALLY good job with it.

Sorry to hear that the old Philco is giving up the ghost, I hope you can get it running again. If not I guess it will have to be a bottom freezer Frigidaire to go along with the Flair, just like Mrs Stevens :)

Wow Stan......

.....what a looker! Absolutely beautiful! Yes, I will have it checked out but at present, with me spending so much time away from the house, I unplugged it to avoid any disasters while it sits unattended. What I've gathered up to this point is that the compressor is getting tired and ......well you know what that means. I will post another thread specifically for the old gal. I would love to keep it going.

And Al, it just dawned on me-my last name would be Stevens if it weren't for the addtional "on" tacked on to the end!!! AND, thanks for you great comment! ((--:: I need to post pics of the other rooms and tell you what I've changed.

Does time ever start passing faster when you are not only having fun but also packing on those years! ((--::

This project I took on late in life has become the love of my life--a dream that I never thought would materialize in my lifetime and become a reality-and what a wonderful one at that. I am living my dream to be taken back in time to the 50s and 60s. Well, as much as I can that is. (Wish I could do something about the price of gas!) a Big Ha! on that one.

I want to thank each and everyone of you who tuned into this thread for your continuing help and support and ever so nice comments along the way. I do believe it was all your great thoughts and suggestions that kept this going all this time. There is a "little" of all of you in my home.

Thank you all for being so kind and giving.

When I worked in the Charleston, SC area, One of our High School Career Centers had classes on HVAC and Refrigeration. They loved fixing and repairing Refrigerators and I saw many older units. You might check to see if the local high school has such a program. It would be a great teaching opportunity for them. Refrigeration has not really changed that much. And you could get it repaird for the parts. Who knows they could solve the problem for ya. Don't give up on it!.

P.S. I love your house! I have a Flair I'm going to save this summer and build a vintage kitchen in my outside shed.

House and life

ovrphil's profile picture
Some of us are so tied to our houses..haven't owned any in terms of what the bank calls OWN, but have built two and moved 12 times. Reading ozzie908's message, I can't help feel a little the same. Not sure where we'll end up, but hopefully back in a house and back to a blended mid-century look in and out. We've had our big houses, so your house looks just right, Dick. I especially like how it looks like a time-warp, like going back into a house in the early to mid 60's...and like the dividers that , to me anyways, look like water (ever see a Hokusai Japanese print with water - they remind of water every time and then, a little Frank Lloyd Wright-ish. Everyone here extracts something differently for sure, but all enjoy what you've done. For a while there, I thought you were decided on leaving...but glad you managed through the turmoils, whatever proportions. It's like art or music - you put your soul into the house and it's giving back to you and everyone who has an appreciation of house.

Keep Going...the ride is far from over and Ozzie908...hope you get a surprise or six along the way - life is still full of them.

Just wanted to let you know that a "hardstart" will be put on the Philco very soon. hardstart

Hi Phil-A hardstart is not a recharge to the compressor system but rather help and support via an electrical boost which is attached to the relay on the compressor to get a tired old compressor to come to life again. Each time it is needed to start up it gets a jolt of electrical stimulus to get it going again. It hasn't been installed yet-I'm hoping it will be next week. I'll let you know.

And John it will be great to see you again this summer. Looking forward to it very much. Glad you like the house.

Oh.... I don't know... perhaps these little things you may have heard of called "E-mail" or a "telephone" or.... this is a real stretch here... maybe you could just drive across the valley and VISIT him??

This thread has drifted ALL over the map for so long and it's not been about the Flair for 2 YEARS now... how about just letting it drop into the archives (which CAN still be accessed any time, in case you were't aware) and start a new thread called:

"Dick S's life in Desert Hot Springs"

~OR~

"How the Desert Hot Springs Turn"

~OR~

"Life in a Desert Hot Springs mid-century modern"

Wouldn't that be a little more appropriate?

After all... this thread has turned into a "personal Facebook page" for the going's on in his life.... it's not about appliances anymore.

And follows it already knows that it's not about the Flair anymore, and its O.K.
There are other threads that are about Flairs, if that's what someone's interested in.

I think this thread is about more, as it should be.
It's about a home!
And about the man who is pouring himself into this home.

So it's about recovery, hope, health, and heart!

The thread doesn't néed go anywhere. It's fine just where it's at (IMHO)

There is nothing wrong with a thread about.....

kenmoreguy64's profile picture
A man and his home, about health, heart, and all the good and bad that goes along with in everyday life. And yes, much of this thread has been very interesting to read. BUT, if we follow the criteria under the "create a new thread" tab, the Super forum is not supposed to involve these matters, it is for kitchen appliances, detergents, and some automotive topics. Kevin is correct, this thread reads like a Facebook page. Almost the verbatim definition of what Stan mentions above is what applies to the criteria for the 'As The Tub Turns' forum.

Click the 'Member Profiles' button. At last count there are 2,623 registered members here. Unless all 2,623 members can have the option of having their own self perpetuating status update thread in the Super forum, then this thread shouldn't be here anymore. This thread is supposed to be about a Flair range. Even if it drifted, the drift topics should still apply to the Super forum.

I think this thread would be most appropriate, following AW.org guidelines, in the A T T forum.

Gordon

This thread harms no one. While it may be a bit off the forum rules there is more value in it than many others. If we are to appoint a thread Gestapo many threads would disappear and the side effect would be a much less hospitable site.

If you don't like the thread ignore it. No one forces anyone to click on anything.

Curiosity has often gotten the best of me when I've seen this thread once again hanging near the top of the list, and I'll open it to take a look.  I think I'm over it now.

Regardless of its content or the obvious bumps from the OP to keep it alive, this thread has gotten way too cumbersome and takes longer to load than the picture-laden bear threads, and I find that annoying.  Maybe my connection is slower than average, but the bottom line is that AWO is not Facebook.  Robert didn't just create the ATT forum for this type of subject matter -- he created a whole web site known as Friends and Husbands for threads like this one.

My brother who operates a successful appliance repair business in San Jose has stockpiled several "parts" for Flair ranges, among them cookmasters and control knobs. He's had a few customers that were very unhappy upon ordering a surface unit control knob and discovered it worked but looked nothing like the originals...my kinda folks.
