I can tell you this about the timers since I grew up with Whirlpool dishwashers and had an early 80's model, it should click click as you rotate the timer from the A/B setting to the C setting and then stop. The A/B setting is usually the Heavy/Pots wash starting point with an additional W-R before the main wash setting I remember the first wash and last rinse on our machine was a heated delay if you picked the Super Scour cycle. You can not rotate the timer past the C setting until you pull the timer knob out, (built in stop in the timer)as that is the starting point for the C setting which was called "Short Wash" R-W-R-R-D.
