Nothing Like A GE

Up until the time I moved into my last apartment complex in El Paso from '94-'97 (they had Maytags), the majority of the places I've lived in had GE washers and Huebsch dryers (although I may be mistaken on the dryers) in the laundry rooms. There were also a few laundromats I ventured to when the laundry facilities in the apartments were overwhelmed with people (I was always told at one I frequented to STOP lifting the lid).

I've NEVER had any problems with them. They always got the clothes fairly clean.

"vintage" laundromats

it's cool when laundromat operators keep classic machines running for decades
-in'89 i was at a laundromat that was still running turquoise mid-'60s era
speed queens-that was a real delight!

What Was The First Laundromat You Remember?

We lived about 3 blocks from a Poly-Clean center. It opened in 1962. It had Whirlpool top-loaders, front-loaders and dry cleaning machines.

Your welcome Dan and everyone!
If I make a special trip to Brooklyn, there is a Laundromat in Bay Ridge that has the real ole Wascomats with the Green, Yellow, Red lights on the left with the timer on the right surounded by the blue control panel. Lets see what happens in a few days??

I even like the vintage lettering on the outside...makes me think of the local store near my house back in the late 70s.

That is VERY very cool. Thanks for sharing the pictures, I enjoyed looking at the vintage machines. Looks like there is 18 GE washers and 7 dryers?

Its interesting that some of the washers have bleach dispensers and some don't. Also it looks like one of them is out of service, as it's cord is wrapped around the coin box.

Fascinating, thanks again!

Gordon

We had a Norge laundromat in my hometown in Ark. complete with Norge Ball just like that one outside. I remember being fascinated with their huge green (?) "Heavy Duty" FL machine back in the 70s.

We had one too!

In Lenoir NC, long gone now, but the old laundry in town still has several Norge front loaders, as well as some ANCIENT Cissell dryers,

I've written here before about the Norge Village that was built here in the '60s. It still had all the same machines when I used it during my college years in the early '80s. Standard-capacity and large-capacity top loaders, a few front loaders, dryers from Hades, and... coin-op dry cleaning machines. And a laundry sink with a wringer! They also had drop-off service.

Correction - the machine I remember was actually a Philco-Bendix "Double Load", pictured in the video in the link below.

The old laundry down the road from where I work here has those same (color and all) Filter-Flo's. I grew up around these things. Nothing like the sound of 6 machines clack-clacking to a stop all at once. They still have a majority of the machines, they're standard capacity believe it or not and all are ramped Activator models.

Correction: These are a little newer, or maybe just lower end machines. I checked and the ones there are 2-speed and some have the bleach dispenser and some don't and have the filter flume at 7 o'clock. Weird.

-Tim

From the pictures, I see 2 machines that may be out of order. It's good to see these machines still going, however they aren't the most efficient when it comes to water. In a world where the operating costs are steadily increasing for laundromat owners, I'd think these GE ff machines will be taking the route of the SQ machine that was replaced by the Wascomat. Larry, was this SQ machine FL or TL?

If you look closely on the last pic, the right 2 machines have bleach dispensers and I think they are newer than the others, as the front is one piece and the others have 2 bolts at the bottom. In the other pics, it is those older ones that have the filter flume at 7 oclock.

I was more amazed that a laundromat would have a machine with a warm rinse!!

Tim: any chance you can take pics of the machines in the laundry by you?

I miss those old giant dryers. You could actually dry a california king size comforter in those and it actually tumble instead of just rolling up into a giant burrito. A lot of laundromats here are removing them :(

I know what you mean Vern, adding stacking dryers with smaller capacity is great for small loads but not great for bulky items!
