In response to Jersey 2448, that found a Beatty wringer washer in New Brunswick, that was made in Fergus Ontario, here are some pictures of the factory. Its a pretty nice building. My great uncle worked there and I just found out my mom's cousin did the payroll. She was in a more 'genteel' office space up on St. Andrew street. She didn't have to 'muck in' with the rough factory workers or uncle Charlie.

The back end was a really great flea market, now it has kind of hit the skids.

The name is all over the town. Streets, parks and park benches. I love the Beatty scoll, just like on the rinse tubs.

The house is 89 or 109 steps to the factory. It depends on which door you use.

Downtown Fergus is very nice and reported to be very haunted.

Ten minutes from Fergus is the equally beautiful town of Elora, on the gorge. In between is a creepy old house of refuge. The building has gave me the creeps forever. I chose to pay a vist.

This mural was done by a local artist here in Harriston. He painted himself as the young boy being brought into the house of refuge. When entered, you only used the front door once. After that only the back door to the barns or when they carried you out. A funeral was the undertaker and the vicar coming to get you. No family allowed and you were buried in the poor house cemetary.

I never knew Beatty's made vacuums. Mrs French next door had the same washer. I saw an ironer last fall, it was huge.

The laundries of The House of Refuge.
Yuck!
A house of 90 people. Some mentally challenged, incontinent elderly plus the hospital. Pitty the horrors that those wringers had to wash. The washer in the back is a dead ringer (pardon the pun) to the one Jersey 2448 has.

English translation (well at least across the pond in England/UK) would have been work house. By any name or translation the idea seemed to be the same.

This was the "you can help yourself but don't take too much" idea of charity. *LOL*

Yes, we will provide a roof over your head, food and so forth but nothing in this life is free and thus you are expected to earn your keep here.

Still suppose this place was better than being on the streets. Sad they didn't at least try to teach skills so the younger persons could go back out in the world and be self reliant.

Great pics and thanks for sharing, Brian. Fergus looks like a nice place - the stone and brick buildings remind me of England. Definitely not a "west coast" look - we have so little brick and stone here.

Great photos and information Brian! I always wondered about the Beatty bros/company and if there was a museum. Thanks for sharing, but to answer your question, I don't have many catalouges going back far. Mostly stuff from the 80s.
