We bought a house and this dishwasher came with it, and its been great(other than teaching my wife she can't put pot handles into the top spinning washer), but she broke the bracket that holds the top spinner. I have tried to repair it, but it never lines up correctly with the water inlet tub on the back of the tub. Any clue where I could find another, or ideas on how to make this work?

"PIC"-ture this...

Jeremy, I probably have just what you need for that repair. Can you just take and post a picture of the broken part or email it to me?I will gladly rummage thru the boxes in the attic and let you know.

Does your top rack have the China Guard on it? That would have prevented the handles from doing damage.

Ok here is the picture of it. I need that round support that holds the washer, and those clips ideally that hold it. Can I move the washer part over or does it all come as an assembly?

Here is one more picture of one of the corners, of the round support.

just a thought...

I see you are local in the KC area as I am.
You may have already attempted, but if still available - you could call Marcone Apppliance Parts in OP or Marbeck which has a store in Independence - in case you can't locate what you need via a member of AW. Sears parts direct also has done well getting parts - through the mail. I usually check online for Sears - get the part number - then call Marbeck and Marcone - to find the best price of the three - which sometimes varies significantly. Ebay is another source. Just a thought. Good luck - that's a great dishwasher, well worth the investment.

KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED

I will take a look and see what I have for you. Your upper washarm and the related parts were replaced with the longer style arm when the 19 series was introduced. It does a better job of washing since it is longer and has jets angled up to get into the corners better. I am almost sure that the larger china guard will fit your old style rack, but I need John Combo52 to verify that if he can. But I will check none the less. I will have to do it on saturday nite when I get home from work or on Sunday if I am not running around like crazy.
At the worst, I am sure the 19 arm and hardware will fit even if it is without a china guard. That was actually omitted on the lower level models thru the years.

I've tried putting the longer arm and china guard on the earlier 18 series rack and it didn't fit. The rails of the 18 rack didn't line up with the 19 clips and parts. I was attempting to do this on Terry's 18 and I only had the longer arm and guard.

I successfully switched the China Guard and upper wash arm on my KDS58 when the 19 series came out. You do have to order clips specifically for the 19 to hold the new China Guard. They are longer and I think they are NLA. John probably has the whole rack assembly he can sell you. If you don't go that route, the China Guard could be held in place with those locking nylon wire tie things

My

brother had the same thing happen to their KitchenAid. I recall he simply removed the broken "spokes" of the china guard. Leaving the center hub, where the wash arm mounts. Worked fine that way for a long time.

Leslie, if you look at the underside of the upper wash arm, there are openings that are angled to spray against the spokes of the China Guard to help the arm turn. I am sure that they also serve to drain the arm, but since they line up with the radial supports, I think they were designed to help with the rotation. It is true that the damage done to the China Guard in the KDI58 probably would not affect performance, but if the whole thing were eliminated, the loading that caused the breakage would probably block the rotation of the upper arm completely. That was one of the great things about the China Guard; it prevented items in the lower rack from blocking its rotation, unlike in a WP where you have to check to see if tall items in the lower rack will stick up so high as to block the upper arm's rotation.

Have you had a chance to look for those parts?

I guess I am going to have to go new dishwasher shopping.

You can email John directly, he is combo52 on the forum here. Just go to the member profiles section. This is quite and active forum so not everyone sees every post. Best of luck with your machine!

By Jeremy, I think I've got it!

Jeremy,

I just went up to the attic and found a complete china guard and washarm for a 19 series including the clips you would need to attach it to your rack.
I thought I had the smaller one from an 18, but I remembered I had tossed it a while back because that China Guard was broken too.

Let me know if you want to give it a try and we can make arrangements to get it out to you.
Steve
