I picked up the manual for the 1957 Lady Kenmore washer (Ephemera) and am confused about how these machines fill. The cycle dial leads me to believe the timer advances during the fill for the wash portion of the cycle. On the other hand, there's a variable water level control (LO to HI w/ RESET) which leads me to believe there's a pressure fill.

Does the timer advance during fills, and if so, why?

Thanks in advance to the Kenmore experts in the family for sharing their knowledge!

Pressure fill.  But at about the 6 or 5 minute mark where there is the word "wash" that will have the machine begin to agitate whether the pressure switch has been satisfied.  On models without a later level control, that was a way to wash a smaller load.  Fill to desired level and then move timer to where it begins agitation.

An Adjustment!

On my 1955 Kenmore there is an adjustment on the vacuum control under the top, like a set screw sort of deal,it operates on pressure.

The timer does not advance until after the pressure switch is satisfied except after the line between fill and wash at what looks like 7 minutes.

Yes after about the six minute mark you can have the LK do dry agitation if you wish or very low water level agitation.  It's kinda fun actually to do!  Anything above the wash line in the fill area will operate just like any more modern Kenmore washer, not advancing the timer or agitating until the pressure switch is satisfied.

I never ran across one....BUT, was the Kenmore/Whirlpool lineup ever with a TIME FILL option like a solid tub?......

I know even Maytags AMP and the Highlander even had a time fill version....plus many other manufacturers.....

interesting with something like a TAG, there was not big outter tub area for an overfill/flo....you had to have the pressure just right, and monitor it, otherwise it would have a good chance to flood the floor...
