Hi All, so, the Servis finally had a timer, I just need to adapt the knob to the spline which is bigger....
So all I miss now it's the other 2 knobs, Mike is going to send me one...I hope I can find another one....
There is maybe a big problem though, since I had the timer working I could not wait to run some loads in it in these days, (I'd like to wait to have it "completed" before making a video to post here), well, tonight I was doing some laundry with it again, so transferred laundry in the spinner, ran the first spin after wash, all okay, so then I raised the lid to stop spinner and added water for soak filling and rinse spin, but got this bad surprise: trying to close the lid it didn't go down...I tried to push and lift the button but the lid just won't close, and spinner won't run of course, looks that the device got blocked, broken...who knows?
I removed the back panel and tried to see how that device looks like....I removed it's screws (screwed on the top) one of the which had a wire twisted on it, it should be a red/hot wire (black and yellow) and looks it gives current to the internal thing...it's really weird that device and honestly I have no idea of how it does work nor how to remove it in full, it does have cilinder inside that would go up and down and or back and forth...not sure...will take a pic tomorrow with daylight...someone knows what could be wrong with it? How to fix it?
Eventually how can I do to remove the top panel? I'm scared to do that though, because the boot in the spinner tub is very dry and could break very easily if I renmove it.... but them still available? That would be nice to replace it if posssible...
Thank you in advance!
Freddy

Hi all, I have disassembled the top and removed the thing that holds the lids to check the internal mechanism, I could not fix it but at least now I can close the lid, I will  just jump the wires to make  spinner run, so it will run even with lid raised (I will just have to turn it off before opening), I made sure the mechanism keeps it closed during spin, heck it spins really fast!!!
Someone knows how many rpm? I have to make sure to do not let laundry too much in it or I will get alot of wrinkles!

Will post some pics.

Re-assembling everything after  gluing tub seal and internal  lid seals with  transparent silicone......

Wow! What a job join the worktop back! It took 40 mins! Hope also the front panel will not require as much as the last time, I needed the help of my sister and we spent  30 mins before get it perfectly framed, those rubber strips kept slipping and falling all the time.

Glad to see you like a challenge Freddy, the top is a real pain to get off and put back on, actually when you know what to do I`m told by the engineers its easy, but if you had seen me and the gang trying to get it off and then back on I was all ready for ditching it...LOl

With the top off check all the gaskets, these are what stops the water from spraying over the inside and shorting the electrics....those gaskets are non existant unless you have a donor machine so its crucial you keep it preserved, we used a spray silicone from a car parts place, spray on and rub it to re-supple the rubber parts, also the washer top gasket was starting to crack, if yours is the same rub some waterproof clear sealant onto it, then with the top back on it will seal well..

The spinner drum spins at 2,800rpm its very fast, is it smooth when running?, are the spin mounts good?, does it move around at all?

What was the original problem with the lid? was the open lid lever broken?

Glad to see you are getting stuck in, your postman should have the control knob with you shortly!!

Mike

Hi Mike, nice to hear from you!
The top actually came off very easily, it was the reassembling it  back the pain, but I managed to at the end.
The spinner gasket was in good shape, at  first I thought it was in worse conditions but it was fine considering age, it is still elastic but seems  a little dry on the external surface..... so spray silicon would help? That is a useful advice thank you, what brand or type did you use?
Now top is already re-assembled but next time I'll remove it I will surely give a spray  of silocone to the spinner gasket, it should be fine for awhile  even without  anyway.
Even the tub  gasket was fine and soft, it was just detached from the tub on the left side so I put silicon to join it to the  tub again, I checked with a small mirror  and a portable  light bulb from the tub ( Could  not fit my head into due to  the shaft)  if the gasket joined the  top  surface for perfect sealing, and it looked so.

The spinner works enough smotthly, so it is almost 3000rpm, thanks for the info! The mounts looks fine, at least I believe so, I can bend   the drum  left and right  but looks hard like it should be....it produce some vibrations for the first seconds, but then runs smoothly unless  bad distribuited load occurs. Never heard it banging though.
The lid lever problem was that it got stuck mid-way, lid also was stuck mid-way and couldn't close or open totally.
I do not know what was the exact problem with it, I did not understand how that mechanism worked.

Thank you so much Mike for the knob, I'll let you know when it comes, now I miss just another one.

Thank you for the great help!

Hi Freddy,
Hope you are well, and Happy New Year & all the best for 2013.
Looks like that Servis is being a challenge, hope you are getting there one way or another.
How did you get on with timer ? Did you manage to get it fixed ? I went down the garage yesterday and had a good rumage around. I think I have found a pump knob, but it hasn't got the chrome inset, also i think I have found a timer !! They were made by Smith's of Cricklewood London. I will confirm when I have had a better look.
Anyway catch you soon
Keith

Thank you Keith! Same to you! Happy 2013 to all!
You're right guys, it's a challenge for me and had to be so since I pad good money to have it here! I cannot give it up nor I will in the

future! I want this machine up and running!
I finally found a timer that could fit the machine and it's original wash knob (with a modification om the knob hole) , even the timer time  pattern that should follow looks didn't change much! So 15 minutes will actually be 15 minutes of washing.

Yes even the broken timers I've here says they're made by Smiths Clocks Ltd.
That is nice you found a knob! Thank you ! No problem if it does not have th metal insert, I would detach mine to fit in it without bending it too much.
Thank you Keith!

I'm here trying to get that damn front panel back in place, it is about an hour that I'm trying but no success...... I guess that if I hadn't my aching ribs due to  my strong cough it would be easier, now they hurts so much I had to stop..... now I'm taking some rest, will have dinner and try again later, maybe a dish of pasta will give me some forces! LOL
Jokes a part! Servis are really built strongly and very good but I can't say practical sense was a skill of their engineers.

Will keep you posted.
Thank you!

Hi all, everything assembled finally! After others 30 minutes of pains! The Servis is ready back  for a wash tonight.
Mike, Postman came today but didn't have the knob, just a package off an online purchase (Mexican Ariel Detergent), I asked for the knob and he said there should be another load of post for tomorrow so maybe will receive it then.
Thank you!

(Sorry for the messy background)

Buzywoman: Mine is a 1964 model, it was told me so from the Miss/Lady? Who sold and shipped it to me, also removing the top I found a stamp on the bottom it was half deleted it stated something looking  like a date ending with "964" so all makes think that it is a 1964 model.
The Mike's green one with knobs in horizontal order, is a servis Mk1 and is earlier as machine, I guess 50s right?
Anyway I'm a newbie into these, others members surely  can give you  better  info about them if you wish.

Damnit!!!!!!!!!

kenmoreguy89's profile picture

Bad luck is fòllowing me with this machine!
I was using it tonight to wash a few white things, well, letting alone the pilot light of the heater that just blowed and made the electric plant security switch shut off,  as expected, means it works thanks god,  I can replace the pilot light, that's not the problem.
I kept using machine with warm water (our central heater is under manteinance), at the time to spin the clothes for the second rinse spin I heard a loud "stang" and then a werid noise, I got there turned off the spinner and it just kept  turning forever, it stopped after two minutes! So I got a broken belt, right?
Are they available?

Where can I find one that fits the machine?
I've seen on ebay are available ones for Servis Mk111 and later models, would that belt fit the mk2?
At this time I think would be best replace even the pump belt, any suggestions?

Thank you!

I should be crossed, cursed or something like that.....

kenmoreguy89's profile picture

Someone must be doing some kind of hodoo to me or my machine....
Really!
Well, okay,  lid switch, pilot light broken,  that's okay, spinner  belt broken that's okay either...it's an old machine it needs attentions I say, but hell the new timer no! no! no!
Today a friend of mine came in bringing a t shirt stained of mold (she forgot gym wet stuff in her bag)  and asked me how she says "Laundry man" to try  get it out as she washed it 2 times and didn't get out...I said no problem an hot wash with a good detergent will solve the problem.
So since I needed a good hot wash and our water heater is still producing warm water only I took the Servis for a boil wash, washed the t shirt , let water get warm all the afternoon,  when I came back I pulled out the  t shirt to rinse, at the time of empting the tub the timer didn't work anymore!
Mechanism is gone, it just idles, no ticking!

Paid it 30 euros!
Luckily I did not even started to modify the knob to fir into, I was still using the pliers....
Every step I do ahed for some reasons I return 3 back!
Sorry for the outburst!
But really nothing goes to the right sense.

P.S
I removed the broken pilot light this morning, front panel got back in place with not much fatigue this time,  anyway I've noticed is  a all in one piece thing......I'd like to keep the original one but I believe it is not possible, I hope to find a round one similar in orange to fit also the chromed ring....
That the minor of the problems anyway now like now....

You might be able to get the timer repaired. There are places in UK that repair timers for automatics but not sure about the simple twin tub ones. There may be similar firms in Italy. If it's clockwork you might even try a horologist.

Hi fido unfortunately not...
I disassemled the front panel again today and brought the timer to the same place I brought it's original ones asking to fix them, it was the most able of the watchmaker in my town ( an I live in one of the most important  worldwide centers regarding gold,  jewels and  watches  manufacturing and sell...) he said he is not into timers so he could not help even this time ....Actuallt first I called the place where I bought it for a return  and exchange since it was used barely 3 times and they said it is not possible  arguing it was my fault...ha ha...not the junky chinese timers they sell, no! My fault! It's original one made in Uk in the 60s lasted 50 years and only reason it got broken was probably by the 80kg of machine on it during a careless shipping travel.
And this stupid china junk lasted 3 times and paid it 30 euros!  Anyway I then realized that even if  the watchmaker could have helped he would have charged me alot more than what I paid for.....it was just a try, I imagined he could not help even this time   since the last experiences.
Anyway  I've now received a timer that my sister purchased for me from ebay as a surprise  trying to help me,  she bought it  in secret after I showed it to her  one day I shared my concerns to her about finding spare ones, initially I hoped it was good also posted a link on here in the other old  (expired) thread about my machine , later I realized it would not  have fit the machine since  the spline was too short but she never knew this then,  in the meantime I did already buy another one, she wanted to keep it a surprise,  after she told me already bought this one for me and she  hoped it would have came quicker,  I had to say her it was no going to be good anyway   ....so a funny  story and I thank my sister so much for trying...but as said actually this timer is of no help, not  suitable for my machine, but is very nice and also have a bell.
I'm at starting point even with the timer and feeling frustrated for everything... I'm not going to purchase timers from those people again so have to look elsewhere and already went in all the places selling timers in the area...
I can read  that Keith found an original timer and if it is fine for him I would ask him if he could sell it to me along with the knob, that would be nice to have an original one and it will just fit into the original one without modifying it, I was  at trying finding ways to do that, I unscrewed the internal metal plate of the broken knob and tried to fill it  with  a hardener plaster  to get the new spline shape, it was a try to see if this method worked,it didn't, the plaster got broken  immediately when I tried to turn it, (you can see infact that in the last picture it had the broken knob on it),   anyway if Keith is willing to  I will offer to send him  the one that my sister purchased maybe he can fit another twin tub if he has others,  it unfortunately is not going to have any uses for me,  it would be nice if it can be useful for someone else, it is a nice timer and I like the chromed finish...I'm posting pics later.
Thank you again!
Freddy

Hi Freddy,

We will get this machine going one way or another !! LOL

Here is the Timer & knob, I think they should be indentical to what you have, apart from this timer does work...well saying that i haven't tested it, but it certainly did when it was taken off them machine, and it ticks nicely :) As i mentioned before the knob doesn't have the chrome insert, tried looking everywhere, but to no avail.

Sent me your address, I will send you a private email as well.

Regards
Keith

Thank you so much Keith! I'm going to send you an email now, thank you!

Yes the timer looks identical in shape,  only difference my original one does not have that sticker but of course is the same thing,
If the mechanism works that the important as the contact is a really simple mechanism and eventually if it would be broken I always have my broken one to fit the terminal contact part.
Thank you for the knob also!
Iwrite you a pvt message right now.
Thank you again Keith!

You all guys are so kind and  helping me alot, you make me so happy, thank you infinitely!

Hi Freddy,

No Probs, I glad i can help you out...I will package it up and send it off next week. I got your address through. The wires aren'nt marked but there are only two, so hopefully you will get them round the right way.

Your machine was the first twin tub i obtained, that was nearly 20years ago..I really liked though, especially the "Deep Rinse"

Anyway, I will gett the timer & knob off to you early next week :)
Cheers
Keith
