Would anyone out there be interested in this Maytag A407? I purchased it last spring at a local estate sale, where it likely spent its entire life until the sale. It appears to be a 1972 vintage, and came with the Operating Instructions and Laundering Guide. My original intentions were to locate a matching dryer, but some things have changed here and my plans have taken a different route. I am not aware of any problems with the washer. I cleaned it up (nasty lint filter) and polished it, and removed the Dymo labels on either side of the timer. I have had it hooked up in the basement and have used it several times to wash the dog's blanket (since it is a large capacity model, and my 85 Maytag is not). Since acquiring the washer, I have bought a 1972 Maytag "Helical Drive Automatic Washers Service Manual" and a 1972 Maytag "Halo-Of-Heat Automatic Dryer Service Manual" - and they will go with the washer. I am in Birmingham, Alabama (35209) if you want to investigate shipping, etc.

If you're interested, lemme know.
Lawrence

appnut

A407 was a single speed motor washer
deep tub like the 606 but not a 2 speed
dial had only one wash cycle, soak only(indefinite time) cycle, and a 20 some odd miniute timed soak cycle

the 3 buttons to the right of the dial are regular, perm press and delicate

**regular ran as a normal cycle
**perm press ran with a cool down where the regular cycle would spin drain , spray and spin
** delicate washed at normal speed but would wash soak wash soak( during the selected wash time)

this modle was the first of what was to become the Fabric Matic line

Thom, thanks. I just never knew the model # for the original Fabric Matic. Very familiar with this machine.

Shipping

Jeff,
I'll ask around and see what I can come up with. When I had a washer shipped from Minneapolis, C&F crated it and set it all up, but the washer was actually delivered by Yellow Freight. Maybe someone else here has a suggestion.

C&F

Uses Yellow Freight quite allot, IIRC. C&F's prices vary depending upon how far the local franchise is located from the item being shipped. This is because they pick up the item, take it back to their location for packing/crating/shipping. Often times C&F's main website will say there is service to a location based upon the zip code entered, but the nearest C&F franchise may be several hours away. This can lead to very high shipping costs since they bill for transport to and fro as stated above. Finally some areas are totally lacking C&F franchises, (parts of New Jersey for instance), leaving a wide gap. So if one wants something from say South NJ picked up, it usually falls to the Philadelphia C&F to do the job (if they will take it on), and of course they are going to bill for all that traveling back and forth.

Beltmann does lots of work for Sears and other large shippers, and their prices can be pretty good, and sometimes much less than C&F. PinBall machine collectors rate Beltman very highly.
