The rods, at least 2 of them look defunct.
The good news is that the designs on those are very, very similar to the thin twin stackables sold for decades. The suspension rods are still available for the thin twins and Im mostly sure they will fit your compact portable: www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/S... |

I was afraid about the suspension rods, but they are affordable, thanks for the link. Well I put a temp cord on it and tried a dry run. Nothing but a humming noise. Hmmm. Either it won't engage without any water or maybe the water pump is jammed. It hummed with all cycles. Anyone have any ideas? I opened up the lint filter and it was clogged, the fabric softener dispenser had a thick covering of gunk. The tub and agitator are quite clean though. Stay tuned. |

Obviously the motor or part of it is getting power, but no rotation for some reason. Several things could be doing this, and the only way to check is with some dismantling.
Pull the pump off and see if the impeller can be rotated and nothing is blocking it. At this point with the pump off you could try running the motor again. If still nothing take the motor off check that it spins freely along with the transmission. The transmission should turn with great ease counter clockwise (agitation)and some minor hesitation/resistance at first in clockwise(spin). If all rotates freely by hand without stalling run the motor by itself off of the transmission and pump. If it hums than the problem is electrical or with the motor itself. At this point a known working DD motor might help, and a volt/ohm meter will come to the rescue more than anything else. Hope its a quick fix, best of luck here! |

I ran the machine on the Super Wash cycle, wow, it's not kidding. I dunno what that would do to clothes. It's not connected to any hoses or drains yet, so a full test is coming up. The water overflow bag has a small tear in it. While machine was off for about 20 minutes with some water in tub,I discovered a small leak. Seems to be coming from the outer tub, will have to take closer look. There is some rust on that side of the pan, so this leak was going on for some time I suspect. I hope the source of the leak isn't anything serious. |

While the machine has a smaller capacity than my Maytag 107 (my daily driver), it certainly has more cycles. So far, it is going to need a lid bumper, a spring replacement kit, a new overflow bag, a seal (I hope) to stop the slow leak, the knob that selects the water level (the escutcheon is missing), a new, correct, quick connect faucet hose and drain hose, some POR-15 to stop the light rust on the right side of the pan and some touch-up paint. It's got a new power cord, plug and grommet. |

Yes, am adding something new to my collection thus following the advice of sage elder collectors, something must go when something new arrives.
Suppose if one had the room would keep the WP as it completes the matched set with the dryer, but alas space is at a premium laundry appliance wise. Besides never really used the WP that much anyway. Maybe once or twice every month or so, of that. Guess just am not a top loading sort of person. *LOL* Real push is due to wanting to take the workload off Big Bertha (Miele W1070). Am getting tired of MieleUSA's attitude about repairs and or spending a hundred or more every year when this or that part goes and requires replacement. My main worry are the bearings and motor, once either goes BB is toast. So think its better to give her a playmate. My machine is a bit older than yours and has the same "Surgilator" as it's big sisters along with the "bed of nails" waterfall lint filter. |

These are very tough little machines, the lint filter in these washers is a great design, it is easy to clean, effective and it is completely out of the way. Outer tub center seal leaks are VERY rare in DD washers, I would look carefully before tearing the machine all apart. The plastic overflow bag-tube can just be thrown away, it is very unlikely that it could ever serve any important purpose. |

When I worked at Whirlpool from 1985 thru 1989 I borrowed one of these from the Wet Lab" and used it when I living in an apartment. I returned it when I left the company. My model did not have stepped-down agitation and an Engineer warned me not to select too long a wash time. It did a great job. I was able to get a full size set of sheets in one load. Two weeks worth of whites made a full load as well as a week's worth of towels. Presently I have a Kenmore version of the machine that my next door neighbor gave me. I seldom use it but it brings back fond memories.......

The good news is that if this machine is leaking at the center post seal this is a much easier repair than the older BD machines with a metal outer tub. I mentioned earlier I have almost never seen a leak at this seal and when we did it was usually because the screws that hold the plastic outer tub were loose or the suspension tri-pod was broken.
All you need do to fix this is remove the white plastic cover, agitator and inner wash basket. Then un clamp the drain hose from the outer tub remove six 5/16" head screws that hold the plastic outer tub to the suspension tri-pod and lift te tub out of the washers cabinet. then if it looks like it has actually been leaking at the center-post seal remove the old seal and clean it thoroughly. Normally this seal can be reused unless the rubber has deteriorated. When every thing is clean and dry apply a small bead of 100% silicone sealant on the grove where the rubber seal meets the outer tub and push the rubber seal into the plastic tub. Then apply two rings of the same sealant around the outside of the center post about 4" and 6" up from the bottom of the center-post column and push the tub and seal down into place and screw it in place, it will never leak again, John. |

No this is the way a real washer is supposed to work Louie, you have just gotten to used to watching a MT.
These are very effective little washers. It does look like your leak is coming from the center-post seal, this type of failure was unusual but easy to fix. The shocks and springs are one part on these machines, hopefully replacing all three will improve the centering of the tub assembly, but the slight out of center condition yours shows usually does not cause any performance problems and we usually leave well enough alone on these washers. Many times even with three new shocks they will still lean a little.
The reason most cords get cut off old electrical items is that people sell the copper wire for MONEY, I cut the cord off every appliance that I send to the scrap yard. If an old machine is sitting on the curb it is easier to grab the cord than the entire appliance for scrap. The old cord can be worth 50 cents up to $2 or more for 240 cords from ranges and dryers. |

Continuation of the above cycle, after the Super Wash. Regular cycle. The odd thing is that the spin won't engage until I remove and replace the pair of pliers I'm using on the safety switch. I haven't run a full cycle with the lid closed yet. The machine jiggles a bit during agitation because I removed one of the side panels. |

Far back as one can remember persons have been doing this in our neck of the woods. My father, uncles and every male one knew did so before chucking any electrical appliance away from a table fan to fridge.
Seem to recall the reason given had something to do with children not playing around with discarded appliances and harming themselves. As for copper and other scrap metal of value in appliances; too true. New York City must see precious to little revenue from appliance or anything else with metal recycling schemes. Any item placed on the curb for collection by sanitation will be gone in |

Well I confirmed it. The machine will not go into spin after draining. You have to lift and close the lid for it to proceed. The timer is still advancing, like the spin had engaged.
When the spin did start, the load became terribly out of balance. Had to rearrange the load. Still, it struggled, oscillating a bit too much for comfort. I guess the shocks are really gone then. Maytag to the rescue! |

Did a little research. As some of you may recall the Whirlpool fills, washes, drains and will not advance to spin unless I raise and lower the lid. I've read the following may be wrong: Bad lid switch, bad timer, bad tranny. Now before I order any parts, I'd like to know from you experts out there if I am missing any other possibilities. |

Hi Louie, After a FOUR minute Hi Motor speed drain period the timer should stop the motor briefly [ 3-6 seconds ] and then the timer will restart the motor and the transmission will kick into spin. Are you waiting long enough for this to happen ?, but if the timer is truly not doing this pause it would be a bad timer and while anything is possible this is a very unlikely timer failure.

My final update. I've decided to give the Whirlpool to Yogitunes. I really wanted to finish this machine, but I am just too overcrowded at the moment. And I know it's going to a good home.
I hope to get another, older version in the future when space permits. Hopefully in Coppertone or Harvest Gold.
