Just picked up a huge (300 oz) vat of Tide HE liquid at Costco.

Washing some throw rugs (cotton, mostly, used to keep toes warm in bathroom). The aroma is pleasant (the Tide, not necessarily the toes) and it appears to be relatively low sudsing. It's not particularly concentrated, though, getting only 78 uses out of all that juice. That's about 4 oz per large load (I measured how much the cup holds). The medium dose is about 2 2/3 oz. I actually haven't ever used Tide HE liquid before, having found the powder to be a good cleaner but with too many optical brighteners to work well with darks. But I couldn't resist the big jug for the usual low Costco price ($18). If it leaves the rugs soft, not stiff, after line drying, it may be a winner. Otherwise, it will go into the ever growing detergent collection...

I used Tide HE for several years and found it worked well in my front-loader. I have softened water, so I rarely used a 4-oz. dose except for highly stained loads.

However, I've recently switched to Tide Cold Water (powdered version) and think it's the best-cleaning detergent I've ever used. And in cold water, too. Who'd-a thunk it?

Do you use the Tide Cold Water in an HE washer?

Or does it come in an HE version?

So far I'm relatively pleased with the performance of the Tide HE liquid. It did not oversuds, and it seemed to get the soiled throw rugs clean enough. I couldn't complete the drying part of the test, since it got dark before the rugs dried completely on the line, so they wound up in the dryer.

sudsmaster-- There is no HE version of Tide CW. In fact, on the inside lid of the box, it says "if you have a HE washer, we recommend you use Tide HE." However, I've been using Tide CW for months (medium load dosage) in my FL.

You have to remember, many of us used FL washers for years before the advent of HE detergents.

Up to this point, Tide HE was the best-cleaning detergent I'd used. It has been surpassed, in my experience, by Tide CW.

I'd recommend trying a box. But use the powdered version. The liquid version is not as good at removing stains.

I bought a bottle of the liquid Tide CW and found it to be about the same as Tide regular powder.

One question though, what is the overall concensus on Tide CW powder?...I mean is it better than Tide's regular powder?

CR rated Tide CW powder an excellent detergent when used as directed in cold water. In fact only Tide w Bleach beat Tide CW (TwB was #1, TCW was #2), Tide HE was a bit lower in the rankings.

So far Tide CW when used in cold, cool or warm water shifts stains/soils many other detergents have not, even with boil wash temps. As I've stated, if they come out with a unscented version I'm IN!

Only use about 1-2 tablespoons in my front loader, and while things can get sudsy, the suds quickly go by the 2nd rinse, and the third rinse water is quite clear. Clearer in fact than with Tide HE or many other detergents I've tried.

Persil - Where can you order the tablets?

A friend of mine when home to Ireland this summer. I asked him to pick up some laundry tablets. He brought back a nice box of persil non-bio tablets. I have been conserving them by using them only for the main wash (using Costco He detergent for the autosoak before the main wash). Any case, at the rate of 3 tablets a week, my supply is rapidly disappearing.

Has anyone seen anyplace on line to buy the persil tablets? The places I have seen only offer the powder.

It is a funny thing about my washer (Kitchenaid fl). You can use liquid detergent for the pre-soak or auto-soak before the main wash. You must, however, use either powder or tablet for the main cycle (if you try to use liquid, it all leaks out before the main washing cycle starts).

Frontloadfan - have linked you to a site that will ship you any British detergent you would like!

I would recommend Ariel liquid & Persil bio & non bio powders as my favourites, although Daz is nice too - plus with powder & liquid you get more washes out of a box too (even in my hard water, I can make a 10 wash box of powder last me at least 20!).

Take care! Happy shopping!

frontloadfan......

If you have an authorized Miele dealer in your area, give them a call...they usually have Persil on hand. That is a wonderful detergent! :)
