Hi,

I have a Maytag washer model A410 that I bought new around 1980. My repairman is suggesting I buy an A512 to replace it. I really like the sliding water level selector on the machine I have. Do you know what later models had that water selector?

Thanks!

Problem

Hi Malcolm,

I have spent a fair amount on it this last year. Now during the wash cycle it stops and I hear clicking. If I shut it off and wait a while it will resume washing. It doesn't do this every time.

Thanks.

Problem PS

Also during the wash cycle the motor changes and makes an awful noise. I got a rebuilt motor last year. My repairman thought it might be a good idea to upgrade to a slightly newer machine.

The A512 has the sliding infinite water lever selector, along with the A612 and A712, but the A512 is more commonly available used.

The clicking sounds like the motor overheating and cutting out. This could be due to improper belt tension, worn belts, or motor slide needing cleaning and lubrication. It also could be more complicated like the transmission putting too much load on the motor but I would check out the belts and make sure the motor moves freely on its slide first. Also make sure there isn't an oil leak underneath that could be gumming up the belts.

Best of luck.

Patrick

Thank you, Patrick. That was my first thought too. My repairman thought I could buy an A512 for what it might cost me to fix this one. He also said the 512 was a better machine than my 410. What do you think?

Dig A Pony, can you tell me the differences between the 512, 612, and 712? Is one better than another?

Thanks!

I don't know that one Maytag would be better than any other....for the most part, they are all the same internals, give or take a newton or orbital tranny......

the only difference between models would be capacity, cycles/options, and speeds....

a BOL unit is not built any less than a TOL unit as far as internals, especially when it comes to a true Maytag....

this link from one of our members will give you a good idea of features from each model in general....

He also said the 512 was a better machine than my 410.

Aside from the motor and controls, mechanicals and tub size of A512, A612 and A712 are identical, all have the bleach dispenser.

The A512 is a one speed machine, the A612 and A712 are two speeders, the A712 being Maytag's the top of the line (TOL) at the time.

Craigslist is the best bet to find a good used machine, preferably under $100, but you may have to hunt a while and deal with some flakey people until a nice one pops up.

I have learned so much from this thread! I did not know the A512 is a one speed machine. I have two speeds now and want the same in a newer machine so the A512 is now off of my list. Thank you so much for the information.

Where are you in California?

I think there are some members out there who are Maytag fans and perhaps could be on the lookout for a two speed machine you might like.

Where are you in California?

I am in the San Francisco Bay area. I would love it if there are local Maytag fans that could keep an eye out for me.

Thanks!

More problems

More problems with the Maytag A410. Yesterday it would not agitate in the wash cycle. The timer just clicked. When I advanced the timer to the spin and rinse cycle, it worked fine. This makes me think it is not the motor. Any ideas from the experts?

Could be the timer, but I'll leave that to experienced troubleshooters.
In the meantime here are few used Maytags in your area.
The A712 is overpriced and looks well used.

Harvest Gold (A710 I think)- sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/app/3883...

Another A710 (or 610) - sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/hsh/3899...

Personally, I like the harvest gold A710, a two speed machine, no sliding water level control but 4 water levels and three speed combos, if in good shape I'd offer $50, could be a nice score

Thank you DigAPony

Thank you for the links to Craig's List. I have a white dryer so need to hold out for a white washer. Something will turn up eventually. In the meantime, I have called my repairman as I don't want to get stranded without a washer. I hope it doesn't cost too much. I actually like my A410 as it has all of the features of an A712 just not the extra capacity.

I ran a load this morning. As soon as it started making the loud noise I shut it off and waited a few minutes. When I turned it on again it completed the cycle with no further problems. Mysterious.

Problem is electrical

My repairman was here this morning. He says the problem is electrical. The motor overheats and shuts off. He did not check the belts or anything else. Shouldn't that have been done first? What do you think?

Post# 688311 , Reply# 19   7/9/2013 at 20:53 (3,943 days old) by DigAPony ()

Sounds like the repair guy is either unable or uninterested in fixing your machine.

I'd suggest grabbing another used machine in the meantime.

That A712 is still for sale, might be worth a call. Another possibility is swapping over the console controls, wire harness and motor from the A712 onto a nice A512 like this one:

I'd suggest grabbing another used machine in the meantim

Hi DigAPony,

I also got the impression that my repairman is not interested. I thought he should have at least checked the belts, etc. I am shopping for another machine. Something will turn up eventually.

I am not capable of changing the controls or the wiring harness or anything like that. I would have to find someone to do it for me.

Thanks for the link. That particular machine is far, far away so I need to find something closer. Not sure how I would get it home.

Thanks for your help.

Loud noise

I can stop that noise by changing the button from Gentle/Fast to Gentle/Slow. This is when it is agitating. Any ideas?

Update

You were right DigAPony. I had a different repairman here this morning. It is the timer. He knew right away what the trouble was. He thought the machine was in remarkably good shape considering it's age.

I will still watch for a 712 but at least it is not an emergency.

Thanks for your help everyone.
