After due consideration, washman has decided to return, plugging for Speed Queen, railing against government regulations, knocking new-age plastic laden machines, and hoping to learn about my existing machine as well as other "classic" machines. And in all honesty, there really isn't any other forum like this one.

Meanwhile, on topic, I finally got the lead out and adjusted the water fill switch. I got tired of holding down the reset knob on the main wash only to forget it during the rinse. 2 Marlboro lights and a cup of coffee later, I have the fill up to the top row of holes on the inner tub. It was very easy to do. Nonetheless, I advise anyone to be gentle with the screw and take your time. I had to go 1 1/2 full turns clockwise to get it up where I wanted it. Just go slow.

I also did more vids and uploaded them on youtube. I figured out that unless I wanted to wait 15+ hours to upload AVI, I converted the vids to mpeg which slices the size down by half with no loss of vid quality. Upload takes about 25 minutes.

Also, I have 3 old time SQ ads I got on Ebay framed upstairs on my landing area. They really remind me of days gone by when washing machines really were durable goods.

And last but not least, the SQ is certainly performing well. No issues at all. It runs like a champ. I have gone through all the cycle combinations notating how each one works.

Also, SQ is sending me some "branded merchandise" (whatever that is) along with a personal note from the national sales manager. Seems they are pleased I am plugging their machines and being supportive of new users on FB as well as those who have questions. What would be cool would be a gift certificate towards a dryer but I know I am reaching on that one!

See link for latest vid of the AWN 542 in action.

Welcome back.

Did you have any issues with polishing compound residue from the tub getting on clothes in the beginning?  I recently steered Dave's daughter and son-in-law away from any HE top loader and they ended up finding a Speed Queen pair on their own.  I didn't want to meddle too much, but she did her on-line research and knew she wanted old-school.

I wiped out the tub with some kind of organic spray cleaner she had, and the rag came out black.  Still, the first couple of loads turned out certain items with residue, but that was it.

They're very pleased with the washer and saw no reason to increase the fill level since it holds so much more than their Kenmore Elite, but have reported serious static cling on polyester/blend items coming out of the dryer, even when using fabric softener sheets.  I'm wondering it it has anything to do with the galvanized drum.  Their old Kenmore had a plastic drum and they didn't have this problem.

No rp2813 I did not

I did a check; somewhere I found a place where you can plug in your serial # and find the date of manufacture. www.appliance411.com/service/date... is the link.
Mine was made in July. In June, my dad replaced his Amanatag, his was built in April.

Neither of us have had the residue issue.

I cannot speak for the dryer, my GE profile, in spite of everything, still works. So I don't have a SQ dryer..............yet. :)

I had the residue issue

However, I never got any on the clothes. I do separate whites washes, including white sheets and never a sign. I did wash the tub out with fantastic and did a hot (130 degree at the tap) wash with liquid detergent. I guess I just got lucky. It wasn't a light residue either. It was in the holes of the tub and up under the lip and in the seam where the side walls meet the bottom. Very disappointing. However, never a problem with residue.

I was also disappointed because the ID label on the LID was put on with a crease in it. I worked in manufacturing and that would have been flagged as a defect in final inspection. I suspect a bunch of machines were rush jobbed because the demand has increased.

Incidentally, this is anything but an anti algore machine unless you modify it. (I mean no disrespect with that term.) just saying.

Shhhhh don't tell algore please

I (GASP) modified mine.

On another note, Alliance is adding capacity

"You know that we are planning a 106,000 sq ft expansion but did you know that we just finished an expansion that added more than 25,000 square feet and 200 skilled jobs."

They told me this is for their small frame (residential) washers. Either this means to keep up with demand for the AWN series OR it is for the forthcoming 2015 model that (ugh) will comply with eco-nazi rules.

From their CEO

"Alliance Laundry Systems, the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial laundry equipment, has announced a planned $23 million investment to increase production capacity for current and new products, and to purchase tooling and equipment at its Ripon, Wis. plant. The expansion will add more than 20,000 square feet to the existing assembly, metal stamping and press shop facilities. Also, it will create more than 250 skilled jobs, adding to the company’s current 1,300 member Ripon workforce.

This expansion will result in a ramp up of production rates, with project completion expected in the summer of 2013. It will not impact ongoing production.

The project is expected to increase Alliance Laundry’s production capacity for small chassis washers and dryers by more than 40 percent. This means that the company will be able to meet increasing customer demand for the most reliable and durable products available on the market today.

“Alliance Laundry is experiencing unprecedented growth across our product portfolio,” said Mike Schoeb, Alliance Laundry President and CEO. “Demand for our small chassis products, domestically and internationally, is driving this phase of our expansion strategy. We have the best distribution network in the industry and our customers depend on us to deliver outstanding equipment on schedule. This expansion will guarantee that we can continue to meet that expectation."

New SQs

combo52's profile picture
And welcome back Ben.

This past Wednesday we I installed eight new SQ AWN412s in a condominium laundry room in NW Washington DC, they replaced 8 ten year old KM Commercial DD washers. The installation went well and it will be interesting to see how these hold up compare to the old DD machines, but I am guessing probably about ten years before we see transmission and main bearing and seal failures on most of them. The only SQ TL washer that we sold that we have replaced so far is one we sold to our veterinary hospital that only lasted 3 1/2 years before the main seal went and took the tub bearing with it. This machine got replaced with another one, as unlike a WP DD washer SQs are usually not worth putting main seals, bearings and transmissions in.

Interestingly I have yet to see any residue on the washer tubs, we have now sold over 160 SQ TL washers.

Ralph, the excessive static your sister is getting is from over drying, with SQs lack of an accurate moisture sensor it is hard to get constant results. The KM dryer also had a steel drum, that is not the difference.

Ben this is not a political forum and every time you mention Al Gores name in vain, I and several others are pushing the report button. This site has a political forum if you want to discuss controversial views.

Glad to be back John

Sorry if you don't like my occasional barbs at Algore but that's they way it is. Deal with it. Use the report button to your heart's content.

On another note, I researched SQ dryers and you are right, none have a moisture sensor. I would assume due to cost/complexity? I have not contacted SQ directly as to why.
