Hoover Logic 1100 A888 update and question

Partly due to boredom and wanting a little winter project, I was looking for an older washer to do up, so I could retire our old Bosch V696 temporarily. On New Year’s day, I picked up a Hoover Logic A888; hailing from 1990. Bought partly as a boyhood nostalgia trip for me, after I stripped down a broken ‘70s Hoover 800 in the late 1980s that was given to me by a neighbour. From looking at internet pics, it appears that very little changed inside these A3 series washers in 20 odd years of production.

The £21 eBay purchase originated from a house clearance, after its old lady moved into a retirement home, and must have lived next to a cooker, judging by the quantity of fat and oil that was splashed down its sides. It seems not to have done too much hard work - no rust anywhere, the print on the front fascia has not worn off and, once the top and back panels were removed, everything looked clean, leak and rust free.

Yet, there were a few jobs to do, other than a decent clean. The belt was cracked, so I changed it, plus the sump hose was both split and perished. The suspension has a fault too. From peering in via the back, the top bolt that attaches the right damper to the bracket, which is welded firmly to the outer drum, flops about. Hi Rob
Glad that you have got fixed up with a new toy. I notice in your previous post you mentioned that it was noisier than the Bosch, I'd say that it was more characterful, like the second gear whine on a 3 rail gearbox is! :-)
I've got an Electron that has suspension problems too, when it ramps up to 1100rpm with a full load the drum swings about and the pulley bolt bangs on the rear panel making an awful din. Not sure if its suspension or the rear panel is just pushed in, although it doesn't look like it. Unfortunately it's out of traffic at the moment as it's become little incontinent. Hopefully when the weather improves I might get round to having a good look at it.

Hoover Suspension

Hello lads, the symptons you describe are because the suspension rubbers need changing, you can buy a Hoover suspension kit for this job, they are very often on ebay and they not expensive, it is a fiddly job but once you get to grips with it its ok to do, the only other thing you will need is a tube of Molykote DX Paste to lubricate the parts.

If you do this job one other thing to remember is the one spring is shorter than the other, the short spring has a metal bracket on it and this goes on the soap draw side, the longer spring does not have a metal bracket on it

This is normal practise for the suspension rubbers to fail after about 3/4 years, they go soft and as a result the drum doesn't sit squarely on its mounts and will sort of gyrate around on a high speed spin.

Broken Bracket ?

I am not sure if I am reading your problem correctly or not, do you mean the bracket that is welded to the tub that suspension rod sits in with a bolt on it is broken?

Suspension

Hi Gary, thanks for the tip, I'll dig the Electron out and have a look at it when the weather gets better, unfortunately I've not got the space at the moment, that and too many other projects! A washdog that needs a rebuild, a 3021 spinner that drips from the tub to outlet spout pipe, a Bendix compact that suddenly decided part way through a wash that it didn't want to do anything other than pump out, a dead T5054 and a Hotpoint 9605 that was taken out of service 4 years ago with a transmission oil leak, and the Dolomite hasn't been started since September!
Too much work not enough time!
