So after those scrummy cornish pasties its back to work, Timer - Check, Tub - Check, Motor - Check, now for the wheels, suspension, pump and back together!!
First up new wheels, which had flattened from sitting 30 odd years....We can now see the extent of the dripping water down the tub and onto the side chassis. CLICK HERE FOR PART 1 CLICK HERE TO GO TO chestermikeuk's LINK |

Now for the new Anti-Twist suspension kit...the drum is mounted on steel rods connected with a rubber block and steel washers at the tub end and a nylon shroud at the baseplate, the large suspension spring is on the outside, a simple but very effective way of providing strong suspension - over the years they tend to twist with wear causing the drum to not be centred.

Well there we are, another Hoover restored to glory, thanks to everyone who took part Gary, Mathew, Lee, Harry the dog and Richard & Ben for those motorway services meet ups to transport the machines from Leeds to Cardiff and back via Stafford!!
I will leave it to Richard to post the final pic of the Hoover A3110 washing machine back in its rightful place - and pretty good it looks in situ!! |

Well having read both threads now part 1&2 I didn't realise how much work had actually gone into it. I am truly grateful for all your time and efforts that weekend. Mike I would like to thank for making the arrangements to make it happen and meeting me on the motorway services both times with my boy in tow who thought it was a day out somewhere haha. Gary thank you for your expert knowledge in this particular machine without you the timer I think would never have been replaced as it's something I just couldn't have done myself or followed instructions to. Matthew for sorting the motor out, the brushes are now bedded in and silent as it ever has been. Lee not spoke to you personally over phone or email but thank you for your time and effort they are very much appreciated.
That pair of underwear left me feeling violated lol, to think my fine small a have been soaking next to that for this long lol. Most definitely not mine. The machine is now back in it's rightful place, for another 30 years. (Will I be repeating they journey again?) I'm now using Calgon as per advice and the machine as a whole looks and performs like new with majority of major parts replaced. I can't tell you how pleased I am to have it back and not worry about leaving it running in case I came back home and it stuck on a spin cycle. Once again thank you all. Here's a picture of her back in here place... |

Hello Richard It was good to get this excellent machine up and running again, a very worthwhile exercise. The two days went very quickly and it seemed no time before we had stripped the machine and then it was back together and we were testing it. Mike Was good to see you and share in this experience without your management skills this probably wouldn't have come off, plus your hands rarely left the washing up bowl, the smell of Happy Shopper Strawberry washing up liquid will stay with me for ever Mat And of course thanks to Mat for breaking his very busy work schedule at the local Gala Bingo to let this all happen at his place. Lee Again good to see you and thanks for the help with timer, pity you raced off so quickly in your car, by the time I got to the front door all I could see through the tyre smoke was a white box with a purple coloured door in the back of your car screeching off down the road The Pants Well we didn't know what to do with them, so Mat being the middle class "Eco" type insisted he would wash them and pass them onto the needy...............hung with pride on his mega high washing line in the picture. Gary |

Evening all
Well I had a great time, when is the next one booked in for? Richard, you have a great machine and will serve you well for many years to come, absolute privilege to work on. All joking apart it was a fantastic treat to work with such talented engineers with a vast wealth of experience and to work on such a fantastic well built machine. As ever I did not leave empty handed as mentioned above as I did not the time before that which will be under restoration soon too. Just fantastic, more, more, bravo Thank you Mathew, Mike and Gary. PS The Cornish pasties where delicious Gary. |

Hi Richard, looks fab back in its rightful place, much better than the back of my car - the funny thing was just as I pulled into Burtonwood Services on the M62 to park up in our usual spot to swap the washer back into Richards car there was a swarm of police cars and a convoy of lorries turned off the motorway - turned out illegal stowaways, what they thought of us lot swapping weshers I do not know!!
Matt, will have to see what happens when Chez Riply comes online!! perhaps we could do a Logic workshop Lee pleasure to meet up as ever and glad you made another space in the rubics cube of Mathews space. Robbie - yes but we are hoping another 34 at least, have you ever owned a Hoover!! PaulC Ta, thought it would be good to show just whats involved - having seen the anti-twist suspension done I would be fine doing it myself now - hopefully thats how we all learn a little more.. Gary, double eggwash and 140 is stuck on my brain ha ha And poor Mathew is still in shock and hasnt been seen or heard of since!! |

Fantastic overhaul there chaps and great to see all the pictures. Just like the original production line! Makes me want my Hoover Electron vented washer dryer all the more!
I should imagine that it make take Gary's eyes sometime to uncross after swapping all those wires - I know mine would be looking at each other after that mamouth task. Love the picture of the "smalls" on the line as well. Wonder how long they had been there. Great job anyway and I bet you are one happy owner Richard :) |

It's one machine that's never really took me. We had hotpoint growing up. That was my childhood machine. Virtually all the family had the same machines cos they were pretty well built. I've used a few older hoover washers in the past. Being a care worker with the older people I've seen some really old machines and been impressed with how clean they get the clothes with the high water levels

Hi
The problem is the timer sticks, it wont advance at various places, the cause is the gear drum that drives the internal timer cam, several teeth shear off so when it gets to that place it wont advance, on later timers this drive method was abandoned for a sort of arm that pushes the timer cam round. I made inquiries with a guy who makes parts with a 3D scanner but it would work out too expensive that way at present to have new ones made A blurry picture of the gear/drum |

Its the best way to keep these machines working, just use them, empty the sumps if they are to be left for a while, also turn the drums so the belt doesn't get fixed kinks in it. The 3203 is the one I would run the most as its that much older I am glad you went all automatic with them, washday? forget it :-) Well you might be right that's its a keymatic not one you would know I am sure *grin* |

well my bet would be the south African Hoover dryer that matches the A3110 he has could possibly be next doing 70mph through Cardiff side streets.
Well it would be good to get that going as they are great machines aswell, and its good to see Mat sweating his balls off in a hot and humid kitchen making dinner :-) Well we will all have to organise it mike There will be a slow cue for these old Hoovers to be sorted I reckon thinking of how many there are out there needing attention. Hmmmmmmmmmm |

So it looks as though the time has come for me to part with the A3110. The reason being is that for practical reasons the A3110 has been sat in the shed since last winter, covered up and protected the best it can be, however this is not the same as being in a heated house and in regular use.
Over the weekend I decided to take it out of the shed and bring it back into the house for regular use relegating my Maytag to the shed for a bit. I love the Hoover and I have emotional attachment to it but its not getting the use or enjoyment being stuck in the shed. I left it sat in the house overnight to come upto room temperature even though we haven't hit winter yet and temps have been mild still. I plumbed it all in on Sunday and noted the cold water valve was noisy. The timer didn't seem to happy either and didn't make the usual clicking sounds. I put it on a 40C wash (E) and went out and did my shopping. It seemed to be doing ok and all heated up ok and drum turning fine and draining out. I got back and the RCD had tripped out and the machine was full of water and sat at cycle G. I took the machine outside and emptied this out and noted as I was moving it there was silver foil (it looked like confetti) all over the floor under the machine. You'll see the pictures that when I moved the machine there was also some places on the floor where water had dripped onto the floor. I was going out so didn't have time to look properly as I had drained and disconnected the machine by this point but there was water dripping from the bottom of the tub but this hadn't got anywhere near the motor or anything. Upon taking the lid of it was clear the mains filter had blown. I know these are not needed any more due to the world of digital and I could potentially bypass this and get it up and running but it was the water on the floor that has put me off. You'll see in the first pic there is a gap in the wooden floor panels where there is just floor boards beneath and you can tell the colour tone difference from the wet and dry bits. I think its possibly time I donate the machine to the museum, I really feel attached to it and would be a shame to see it go but unless I bring this back into daily use in the house its going to end up deteriorating in the shed. There is rusting around the door which was previously patched up and the back panel is rusting too. I don't want the machine to get any worse. Its a shame as I was going to bring the machine back into daily use and possibly give my maytag to my brother as they are in desperate need of a washer. See pictures below. |
