After messing around with this since November of last year (thread 49390), I finally picked up a Lady Kenmore Gas Dryer which I believe is model year 1960.
The unit belongs to the seller's father and was operational until a few years ago when the heat went out. Rather than scrap it, the seller put it on Craig's list hoping it would be rescued. Unfortunately, he didn't answer emails because of heavy spam and the phone number was hidden in a drop down menu I only just discovered, which is why this took six months to do. The unit is in good cosmetic condition, however, the drum as recently seized and the three toggle switches on the left are all very "soft". The pink cancel button won't stay in the neutral position at all. (the command the toggle bar is hiding is "OFF"). As many of you know, this came with a bag rather than a conventional lint screen. Lucky for me there's one left in the bag compartment. Also notice the door contains a reservoir to contain fabric freshener. Anybody remember the scent? We had a similar gizmo on my Mom's 1968 Kenmore Dryer, but it was a small vial in the screen compartment. She disliked the odor and it was never replaced but can't remember the smell. I recall a outdoor-pine scent. Sorry there aren't any more drum shots, that's when my camera gave out. Plans: Frankly this was a rescue operation only, I have too many washer and automotive projects ahead of this one and had to sneak her into the garage as it is. That being said, I guess I'm now in the market for a matching washer... |

Yay Bill glad you rescued this dryer, Grey in Omaha Ne. has an electric one that he found in never used condition several years ago.
This was a very rare machine, and unfortunately the chances of finding a matching washer are slim, but this is what makes this hobby fun looking for such rare machines. The drum bearing is not likely locked-up but rather the blower bearing is locked or the belts are just stuck to the pulleys from sitting, [ on this style dryer it was never easy to turn the drum by hand because of all the reduction pulleys ]. The reservoir inside the door is to put water in if you want to dampen clothing for ironing, the built-in air-freshener system has the little bottle you remember from you Moms dryer in the top of the control panel. The air-freshener smelled sort of like bubble-gum to me diffidently not a pine scent. I know these dryers very well mechanically, so if you have any questions when you get into it get in touch, I would also either be interested in buying this dryer from you or if you want the same dryer in electric I would be willing to convert it electric for you as it gets rebuilt. I have a pair of 1959 LKMs and I wish the dryer was gas because I am running out of electrical capacity at the museum and the other problem we have at the museum is we are restricted to 208 volts so we lose 25% of the drying speed that these electric dryers were capable of when run on the full 240 volt power. well |
