Back in the late 1970's, my good friend Alan had an apartment in an old building in the Western Addition of San Francisco. There was a late model 30" gas range in the kitchen that said "Frolic by Brown" on the back splash. What a cheap, "chincy" thing that was. Fortunately for my friend his cooking adventures rarely went past boiling water. The other thing I remember was the dinky Kelvinator refrigerator built into the wall. The compressor unit was located in the building's basement and apparently serviced several, maybe all, of the apartments. The little fridge no longer worked and smelled pretty awful inside, but it did have this very cool chrome knight on the door. We used to have great fun exploring old neighborhoods and occasionally would pass by an apartment building that had a plaque embedded in mortar that said "Refrigeration by Frigidaire," probably the same idea as the little Kelvinator. Crazy the stuff you remember...
