Okay....This is gross!

I found this helpful video on Youtube of this fella trying to figure out why he was getting a "Suds" error on his Duet.  Watch what he pulls out of the sump strainer.  It blew my mind!  I also love the comments below the video thanking him because they had the same problem with their washer and they had to clean theirs out also.

When I replaced the pump on my HE3T that was about 14 years old at time there was not even a spec of lint in it.

This is a testimony to "user failure"!  I also bet most of these "failures" go online and bash their machines and how lousy they clean.

YUCK

Not unusual.  Similar bunch of debris reeking with mildew was in the Duet HT I refurbed a couple years ago.

OTOH, my friend Debbie's HE3 (non-T) which is older than the refurb Duet was clean other than a couple candy wrappers and small screws when I changed the pump ... and she has 13 dogs and several cats.

Suds error can be caused by debris in the pump trap that obstructs free flow for draining, not just from using non-HE detergent.

As soon as I started the machine, not even any water filled.

Repairman came out and replaced the pressure sensor, everything has been fine since.

Gross. I have seen stuff like that pulled from sinks in a bathroom, but never a washing machine. Wonder why top loaders don't seem to have this problem? I guess the quantity of water flushes a lot of crap through the machine.

Once I learned by video's how to clean my Duet's drain trap, for the first few years, I periodically would take it off and check it. But Whirlpool does NOT make it easy at all....But when I did check it, there is hardly anything there. Maybe a small piece of lint, but that's it. Almost clean as a whistle. So I haven't checked it in probably 3 or 4 years now.

When I added the recirculation pump to my Duet washer, I opened the drain trap for the first time in 13 years and found it to be very clean. I have cleaned many traps for customers that looked like the one in the video. Jeff

Suds Error

By the time you get this era code there is usually quite a few foreign objects in the trap, all this crap in the trap really shows a lot about the housekeeping in this household. Actually this trap was cleaner than many we have seen when it comes to mold and slime. And yes TP Full fill washers do get stinky and full of mold and slime. I have seen plenty of GE FFs, WP DDs, and even MT DC washers full of slime and mold.

All it takes is bad laundry procedures, cold wash water, cheap ineffective detergents [ Sears, Arm&Hammer, Purex, Amway, most Environmental brands and many diluted dollar store offerings, to name a few ], add this to using too little detergent and excessive fabric softener and you can have a real mess.

Yikes!

Amazing that this trap could get so nasty!

I understand the cold water washer and the cheap detergents causing lint build up from slime and oils and other crap!!!!

How in the world do screws, paper clips, hair ties all work their way out of the tub?  I don't get that point.

Is there some secret exit in the tub that I don't see?  I have never been able to figure out how this stuff ends up in the drain trap!  (thank goodness)

I bet you guys see the most nasty and smelly stuff!  And the owners I bet look at you cross eyed when you tell them why they are ending up with a clogged pump stainer.

Blah!!!!

Things In Outer Tubs

combo52's profile picture

Front Loading Washers have ALWAYS had a lot of trouble with foreign objects [ coins, bobby pins, screws, nails, small Jewry, collar stays, tiny socks, thin scarves and on and on ] getting past the gap at the front of the cylinder.  As I mentioned in my last comment it has a lot to do with the way many households are run today.

Hi Brent, try every time you do a load of laundry in your FL washer taking a hand full of junk from your household Junk Drawer and add this each washer load and I will guarantee you will eventually find some junk in the pump trap, LOL.

A couple of weeks ago, I heard this odd scraping noise in my Speed Queen front-load washer while it was spinning. Not really a grinding, just scraping noise. Sometimes loud, sometimes not. A couple of loads later, I decided to check the pump. My '04 model does not have a sump in the outer tub per se, but there is a strainer/cleanout port on the pump itself. I pulled out two dimes. No lint, hair or any other junk, just the two dimes. One of the coins was still in the outer tub and had not made it's way to the pump trap but I was able to jiggle it down there and now the problem is gone.

I had a WP Duet and after four years had almost nothing in the pump trap, a few strings was all.

I just saw this a few days ago on a CL ad for a GE front-load washer. I would imagine they had a little trouble with the junk drawer ending up in the washer, too. Lol. I wonder if they had to buy each letter individually or there is a whole kit you can buy...

What on the green earth are you doing looking that up anyway? OMG, plain nasty.

combo52 said it best about "household's of today". In the business that we are in, (as I have commented before) you'd gasp for air on the sight/smell of some of the things we see. Of course I always find a way to check out the washer. Best estimate, 87% nasty folks, 6% will work, 7% clean. Say it to the employees all the time "Very Few Give a Damn About Anything"! Not at my house sweet friend. Honey please, dog food in the storage riser under the washer. AND he calls himself out on it. One word. NASTY!

and I always check EVERY pocket of shirts and pants. Yes, I have made a couple of mistakes and missed something in the past a couple of times. When the wash was done, I found a quarter and another time a small screwdriver. I was so MAD, but they remained in the tub and didn't seem to damage anything. It's REALLY EASY to miss these things with all the hidden pockets in clothing.

Not only washers but dryers collect all kinds of things also. I have a set of early Maytag Neptunes in a rental house. One of the Tide pens went into the washer and dryer. The large part of the pen ended up in the blower of the dryer. How this made it that far is still a mystery to me. Never found the top cap or the dabber. Don't know where those pieces ended up. I also have a set of Duets and have filled the tub completely with suds accidently, thought this is going to be a suds lock. Nope it went right through the cycle, no delay or suds lock. Needless to say I was impressed.
