not sure if this is the death knell of a well-loved old machine. not sure what to check first - how do i know if the bearings are bad or if it is something else? what do i check first?

I would think that if it was the bearings going bad, you would hear them get higher in pitch as the basket's rpm increased. At least that's what a wheel bearing does. It sounds like the brakes are wearing out. I would inspect them first. I hope this helps.

The brake is dry. It just needs a bit of heavy motor oil.

It's not a super-involved project.
