I just checked and saw that it airs at 6 AM here. Yeah, not happening. That means I'll be watching it on the CBS web site or via a link from someone among us who has recorded it.
While cruising through the CBS site, I did see that back on 8/30 they aired Bill's report on the vacuum convention and I recognized some familiar faces. If that segment can be used as an indicator, the washer story should be respectful, educational, and most of all, fun! |

I see what you are saying but be that as it may, on balance, things should improve as more machines that shouldn't be crushed will instead be saved. Perceived value is key for people to bother placing an ad rather than call the scrap hauler. Which brings up a thought. Has anyone here contacted said haulers and offered a bounty well above the recycle value for desirable vintage machines? |

Excellent thought as I was thinking the same.
The next thing I think we'll see is once the show airs, IF what you predict starts to happen, you can be sure the CEOs or whom ever at the Helm at Whirlpool and whatever other Appliance manufacturers are left, they'll immediately start offering retro vintage colors on Crappy POS machines to capture the audience at astronomical prices. Thus the end of the reign of Stainless Steel which I would gladly throw a party for. My personal biggest reason for my detest of SS is I have worked in a commercial Food Service environment my whole life. And I'm surrounded by Stainless. It is so pleasant to come home and look at my White, Black, Harvest, Coppertone, appliances and not worry about smudges and glaring Stainless.
I will be at work but will check in here as soon as I can hopefully watch it here via Link.
I think and hope the show will be a smash !!! And what a cast of Characters !!!
What Fun. |

Jon, Just a quick note to say thank you. The story will be on tomorrow and we are really happy with it. The story was a pleasure to work on and you were a pleasure to work with. Thanks for opening your home – and laundry room – to us. And thanks for all the help. Please extend our thanks, as well, to the other guys. Best, Amy

BILL GEIST: Keep it clean Most people consider doing laundry a chore. They obviously don't belong to The Washing Machine Collectors Club. Founded in 1984, the group's members collect old and rare washing machines dating back to the 1940s. And when they get together for what they call a "wash-in," the agenda includes -- what else? -- washing their dirty laundry while marveling at the inner workings of their beloved antiques. Part collector's club, part support group, but all fun, as only our Bill Geist can show you. CLICK HERE TO GO TO stricklybojack's LINK |

OH MY G-O-O-O-O-O-O-D that was freakin' AWESOME!! All of you did a great job representin' the AW family. So many cool machines featured; especially those Blackidaires.
Not having met any of you in person, it was great to hear your voices. I was hoping a box of Rosalie's Zero Suds would make an appearance...and it did. Wow. Just wow. Gotta watch it again! 👏👏👏👏👏👏 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐 🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁 |

a wonderful job of representing the club and our hobby! Bill,Amy, Henri & Andy were a pleasure to work with and I love the fact that they had most of us talking on camera. I think it gave a good slice of the club. Glad you all liked it , I was told they had 6+ million viewers!!
So we are now OUT there !! LOL.
And yes I am so glad Rosalie's got a cameo shot with Paul saying "Oh its like Christmas" while opening the box !!!
Launderess , thank you - you must come with laundry next time !!

I finally got to see the segment. They did a good job on the piece but I kinda wish that they had Jon look at it before airing so that any mistakes could have been fixed before airing. That "Blackstone washer and dryer " kinda made me say ...what?! I should have not worn that shirt since my gawd I looked huge in the video as they say that video cameras add 10 pounds. The part where I was interviewed was good but in my head when it was being done, I didn't think anything of the camera until that little voice in my head said...hey you your going to be on national tv! Then it went downhill from there...lol

I have tested a lot of detergents worldwide when I was developing Rosalie's Zero Suds.
I did have several boxes of OMO from my terrific Cuz up in Coff's Harbour.
Thank you bluejay for finding and posting that link, I couldn't find it!!
I was thinking on camera, I should have mentioned our UK contingent and our NE contingent.

Guys,
This was wonderful, really wonderful :-) I was watching it on my phone at work this morning whilst making my coffee and my workmate came and watched it with me and just "ok, i get it now!". After over a year of making a joke out of the fact I have made the laundry room at work 'my territory'. Above this segment really showed the fun and the true passion for what we do in a non judgemental and friendly light. A very special moment to treasure. Thank-you for making it happen :-D Matt. |

What a great segment! It would have been nice if it was more than 5 minutes, but then 5 minutes is better than nothing. It's really great they approached it from "human interest" perspective, rather than trying to make us look like a bunch of whack jobs. Now what the viewing public think however may be a different story, but I thought it was a wonder piece!

This was a fun segment, could have watched those machines going for the whole hour if they used all the footage they filmed. Meeting Bill and his crew as well as some new faces of our own group was a real treat. While Jon was busy with the crew, the rest of us had lots of time to sit and talk, and grow closer together as friends.
I wanted to extend a huge Thank You to Jon for hosting everyone and opening his home and life to the cameras. I'm sure we all agree that this fascination/hobby was well presented and a fine tribute to many who have been derided and laughed at for their unusual interests. Thank you again, Jon! We're all very grateful and proud of your many contributions to the group. |

I came to work this morning, one of the girls said Do you ever watch CBS on sunday mornings? I said no. She said well there was a segment on there that made me think of you. I said Oh? She said yea, there's this group of guys that get together and watch their washing machines.. And they collect them....
I said, Oh, I wonder if that was AutomaticWasher. She's like, oh that website you always talk about? I said Yea. She's like well I dunno, but there was one guy that only collects turquoise machines and, (I interrupted and said, Oh, Turquoisedude) yea, and they showed this beautiful black pair that ... I said had the controls that looked like alarm clocks? The control tower frigidaires? She jumped, Yes, them!! Must be the same club! I said I'd come on here and see if anything was posted with info about a segment. LOL. |

Jeff-- I would love to read the history of AW and the groups that led to what is has become.
Years ago I, for reasons that elude me, erased my profile and started it again from scratch an hour later. I'd already been coming here for a number of years, but all that was lost in the erasure. I'd love to know when I first posted. I'm sure it was one of the classic, "I can't believe there's a website dedicated to washers! I thought I was the only one into them!" posts that we see from people when they first discover AW. I've been here through a couple of format changes; it's been fun to watch the website evolve and grow over the years. AW is by far my most frequent (and favorite) stop on the internet. 😍 This post was last edited 09/22/2015 at 21:11 |

I know Greg that we are not nuts but some people are still biased as what is for men and whats for women. But as a kid I was told I was a sissy for liking washers and play with only boy toys like trucks and sports. I wished I had the toy washers I had that were thrown away I had because it was for a girl only. OK, its alright for girls to play football now and I despise football, and wished I had all of those toy washers back, but I am not spending $200 for a toy washer that cost 2.99 when I was a kid.

I like his segments, Bill does some nice interviews, as in this 'Right to Dry' segment, if he only knew of us then.....
I got a ticket for this once while living in a HOA area, actually from car mats hanging over a fence while I was washing the car....... but whats more AMERICAN than line drying clothes....that's right up there with an apple pie cooling on a window sill.... |

I was the same way! I used to look at the Sears wish book, and they had a toy washer and dryer set...the washer had a handle on the side to make it wash and spin...I wanted it so bad..along with an easy bake oven! Heck, I knew how to do laundry and load the dishwasher when I was 3 years old, and my sister who is 3 years older than I could not even turn the washer on! I'm so glad I'm not the only nut job who watches videos of washers on Youtube! But, we have come a long way...my marriage is recognized now. |

I never thought our little segment could reach so deep into Applianceville as to bring up some of the same memories I had about toy washers, and Jimmyb your story about the new found support of your "washer-widow" as we like to call them is the second story I've heard about "washer-widow" support for the collector-in-house this week and its only Wednesday.
I have people I haven't seen in over a year coming up to me to congratulate me on the show. I guess it really did reach 6 million viewers!!!
Bill really did a super job with us, I wish Tom & Chuck & Robert could have been in the segment because they were there at the start too.

Watching this video again tonight brings some emotional moments for me. Allowing me to tear up a bit with pride of belonging to such a unique group. It is amazing to think we are part of this world wide "family" of washing machine collectors. we are now recorded for the 2nd time on television thanks to J. Charles. you need to post our first Boston episode in you famous lower level!
Jon you are such a natural in front of that camera, you are the bestest spoksman of this club. I have shared this CBS video with many friends & family,"there now you see I am not the only one" I say! LOL. Thanks to you Jon Charles, John Lefever and Chuck Diel from the 1980's People magazine feature poping out of the dishwasher. Who knew! Most of all thanks to Robert Seeger for the greatest web sight, without none of this would be possible. Thank you,Cheers to you, may the Tide always bring you back in the morning. OMG it's amazing how many people I know that has said something to me about being in the video . My neighbors saw the segment and wanted to know how many washers and dryers are in my basement. I thought that was funny that they asked. Then I was at Walmart yesterday and I was in the detergent aisle and two people asked me if I was the guy that was on tv Sunday morning and my gawd the questions I got!

That's great, Mike! CBS Sunday Morning has a huge audience, so I'm not surprised by your detergent aisle encounter.
My sister and I have a lengthy phone conversation every Sunday, and she asked if I'd seen the program because "There was a story about guys who collect washers! I thought of you right away." I said, "Yeah, that was really interesting." 😉 |

Hey Jon
That photo was taken in the nose of a British Airways Boeing 747-400 when I was flying from London to Phoenix. I have found these photos to show you how the windows are configured (the motorized shades are behind glass).
Note: it wasn't my seat; I was sitting on a "buddy" seat. The footstool of every seat has its own additional seatbelt and can be used as a companion seat for dining etc. (cannot be used for takeoff / landing).
All the best Mark

Or perhaps a lifetime of your Frequent-Flyer points...
I imagine if you had a Credit Card with the airline's FF program, paying a full-fare return (econony) might get you enough, but I have no clue. |

Brad, were you able to view it in the last few days? Here, I can't! (but I have recorded it). Of course, I know there are ways with VPNs and other things but it won't work with my Canadian address. I just noticed that the video that Martin posted in the reply #98 above can still be viewed from Canada! |

The video is up to 48K views on Youtube already! I just tried both the Youtube and the CBS link. Both worked here but I think the Youtube link has better streaming resolution.
I assume that CBS holds the rights to the piece. I wonder if we could obtain permission to place the video here on AW? I have a good off air copy along with others that have recorded it. |

I guess I survived the end of the world. I just now saw the CBS Sunday Morning Segment for the first time. But I was traveling in Michigan, running around crazy. Oh well. Late for the party. I try and watch the show each Sunday(it became a better show in later years). What a great segment Bill did with you all and for the first time, I got to meet some of you collectors.
Jon Charles - Nice job on camera! I enjoyed seeing your machines and a basement that reminds me of so many I grew up with. What a great collection of appliances you have. Nice to see and hear Paul and some of the others. I love the old washers and dryers with their style, lights and design. It was a fun, good segment that promotes your interests. I wished it was a longer segment, that's all. :-) Phil(B)R. |
