Hello everybody. I am curious about dishwasher pumps. I noticed that every dishwasher I have heard sounds different as far as pumps are concerned. What can you tell me about pumps? I am talking about the design, sounds, and how big and powerful they are. Every dishwasher I have heard has a unique sound. For example, the whirlpool point voyager and power clean has a swoosh sound when trying to circulate the water. When it is full of water it has a steady humming. Why do dishwasher pumps sound different? Please Explain.

Not everyone that has the knowledge you want about a specific thing you post is on this site all the time. If someone knows and wants to reply, they will.

motors used on main pump of dishwashers include:
-split phase:used on most American dishwashers for decades, run at 3450 RPM
-shaded pole:used on late-60s-1990s GE dishwashers and '70s Westinghouse dishwashers-turning at about 3000RPM,these motors are simple but inherently inefficient, requiring oversize cooling fan to keep temp in check-on GE dishwashers with shaded pole motor,a strained sounding magnetic whirring can be heard as motor speed varies some with varying loads on motor as pump sucks a little air at times.
-split capacitor:run at around 3300-3400 RPM and used on a lot of later model dishwashers
-PM synchronus AC:used on sealess "magnetic" pumps, sometimes omnidirectional pump is used, but have seen them with electronic circuitry to make them start same direction every time so directional pump can be used.3600 RPM.
-brushed DC:seen on some late model dishwashers, speeds well over 3600 RPM and variable speed are possible.
-brushless DC wet rotor sealess:my 2010 Bosch dishwasher has this type, driven by electronic circuit, varible speed and RPM over 3600 are possible.Very quiet since there are no external moving parts.
Basicly 3 pump types:
-centrifugal:radial vaned impeller,most common type
-axial:ducted propeller, like a jet ski pump-'60s vertical shaft GE,also found on thermador and some others-usually quite loud :)
-turbine pump:used as drain pump section on some reversing motor pumps,
-mixed flow:horizontal shaft GE including recent models(2010s)

westinghouse dishwashers

I have yet to hear what the Westinghouse dishwashers sound like. I do love the sound of GE's.
