From all corners of the United Kingdom - London, Wales, Merseyside. Lincoln and Derbyshire we descended on the hometown of Richard (Ricky50) in the North East of England for a weekend meetup, to work a little magic on his washers, vacs, vintage TV`s and also to celebrate Darren`s (SlowSpin66) birthday !!
Here`s the gang getting to grips with Richards Hoover Keymatic 3224 (first model)which is in great nick just needed a tune up and a few replacement hoses. Lots of tea and Tunnocks wafers. L - R, Richard (Ricky50), Darren, (SlowSpin66), Alistair (Vacbear58) , Steve (SESteve) and Mathew (Keymatic3203). CLICK HERE TO GO TO chestermikeuk's LINK

His Hoover Keymatic is in pristine condition and we set too sorting out the hoses and a sticky keyplate reader. There was a bit of a squeal on the pulsator but after a dousing with water it all settled down, (rather like the screaming of a hoover spinner until you place water in it!! The pump was cracked apart and stripped down in order to de-scale it and lubricate the drive shaft.

Its a late production run model, around September 1963 and has the latest version timer (Clear Housing) and an updated wiring loom, Hoover had 5 versions of their first Keymatic timer which was updated throughout the production run..

Here we see the clear housing V5 timer with the German clockwork motor inside, the next pic shows us the back of the timer with plug in wiring connectors that link up to the card reader.

The keyplate card reader / holder was a little sticky so a quick clean and sanding made all the difference to sliding in the Bakelite keyplate. Picture 2 shows us the keyplate switches under the grooves which line up with the spaces on the Keyplate to select the programme.

The following day after a refreshing glass of freshly squeezed oranges (much needed) and a whipped up breakfast of salmon & scrambled eggs it was time to hit the road for the garage and Richard had hired a local community centre where we could set up the appliances to set up and use. Heres the Bendix model D which is awaiting a stripdown, panels painted and hoses replaced, bearings spinning beautifully..

This model MK2, model 19, was manufactured in the Servis UK factory, exported to New South Wales, badged and sold in Australia - this model came back over here in a shipping container when the owner came back here to live. It has a linked heater / wash programme timer which heats the water then starts the set washtime programme. The spinner has an automatic timer for use with the flow rinsing.

Hi Ian, you and your keyplate / reader & timer where discussed, amazing how all those variations of the timers where produced, but like anything new updates are a must. I don't think the timer is open at the base.. ps, we discussed the servii spin cans and are sorting out a 111 , stripping a washtub for Gary`s wesher and spin can for you, am down at Johns shortly so will ring to meet!! |

It was such a lovely weekend and had the bonus of being able to pop in and see my folks who only live 5 miles away. The only downside to that was I missed out on the pies which smelt delicious.
Finally, I got to see a keymatic working and just loved how all of Richards machines a built like tanks. Mike's cake for Darren was superb and the finger fancies - well can't wait for some more of them. Hope you get them fully up and running soon Richard S :) |

It was a wonderful weekend, but as always, the time shot by far too quickly. Richard is a great host who made up completely at home in his lovely house - his vintage kitchen has been featured here already - and lots of interesting things, we could have been there a week and I doubt we would have seen all of them.
What Mike's photos dont show is the dedication of the lads to get that Keymatic pump working, although they were working under cover it was cold and wet and I was seriously impressed by their determination to do the work. It was grand to get back into Richard's lovely warm living room after. Al |

As regards the twin tubs, it depended on the machine and more particularly the heater rating - although a few twin tubs could be had without heaters most had them. With the Hotpoint and Hoover, as far as I recall it was not possible to heat the water and wash/spin at the same time. With the Servis (or at least the later versions) and other machines it was sometimes possible - you would hardly have been rinsing and spinning when heating the water from cold, but perhaps bring the already hot water back up to temperature after one or two loads had been washed. i cannot think of a single twin tub where it was not possible to be rinsing/spinning once load while washing another.
I imagine the AEG rinsing would have been similar to that on at least some of teh Easy twin tubs. The Kenwood dishwasher was designed for various locations - it is somewhat smaller that the standard 2ft x 2ft footprint but could be used on the floor (there was an additional wheel set which raised the height a little), had a bracket available to hang it on the wall, and I have seen several pictures of it built in at eye level. See the picture below. It would not be difficult to build in a dishwasher at a raised level (at least one regular poster here has done so) - indeed i am contemplating doing the same thing as and when i re-do my kitchen - I think the problem about doing so is whether you can sacrifice the 2ft x 2ft of counter space to do so. The Kenwood is unusual in that it uses a propeller action to drive the water, it must surely have been among the last (introduced circa 1966) to have used one. The community did not have a lot of hookups, but needs must and we were able to do what was needed - all our imaginations were working full time on how such a great space could be adopted for the display of old appliances LOL

Hello Jim, this Australian twinny is a rare beast as is its correspondent model produced here in 1963, it was the first Servis Supertwin to feature the automated / linked heater wash timer, 3 set programmes which where Prog Nu 1 Very Hot for White Cottons, heats water to 90d ( 180f) and then washes for 12 mins. Prog Nu 2 heats to 60d ( 120f) for colours and washes for 8 mins, Prog Nu 3 heats to 40d ( 90f) washes for 4 mins for delicates. The Spin Dryer had a timer up to 4 minutes, you could select manual boil or manual wash as well as the automated 3 programmes.
So in this resp[ect this was the only Servis Supertwin from 1959 to 1990 that you could NOT Wash / Heat / Rinse & Spin at the same time.

All other Servis Supertwins from the first MK1 in 1959 to the end of production in 1990 offered the user the ability to Was / Heat / Rinse & Spin simultaneously, the only manufacturer that could offer it - mind they were know as the "Rolls-Royce of Laundry Appliances.

I love the symbols that they used to denote the Heat and Spin actions, the heater was wired through the spin switch so as not to overload the electrics.

What a great day and happy belated birthday Richard. I love the Kenwood dishwasher and surprised to see a Western (or Northern) Electric wall phone?
Once I get over my irrational fear of flying for the last number of years a trip to Newcastle to visit the relatives scattered thereabouts would be nice, before it's too late, I'm turning into an official senior citizen next week. Go Aries.
One other crazy thing about looking at group pictures is how often you see someone who resembles someone you know.. in this case Steve is a ringer for Mike at my gym.. what's he doing there, I had to do a double take. |

On day 2 my dad said well I know you to Steve also !! I think he was getting a bit self conscious that everyone seemed to know his face. And now you !! Lol Steve you're a handsome lad with a face that must be known all over the world !! Richard |

One more message about the AEG Agilux. There's one for sale here. I have absolutely no intention of getting it, but the lady who sells it was nice to send a few pictures of it. A bit small, but it shows what the agitator is like. I am very greatful for these pictures, it's the first time I got to see the inside of an Agilux.

Well it is getting on for 10 days into my 50 th year !!! I'm still reliving the weekend . What a fantastic time on a number of levels !! Richards hospitality and kindness towards us all who descended into his beautiful home !!! I even had my own room surrounded with some beautiful vintage hoovers !!!! No sharing for me !!!
Some really rare machines to work on and the rest of the lads so generously sharing their knowledge and experience to improve the plight of the collection !!! Thirdly an opportunity to spend a weekend with such fantastic friends who enjoyed a bit of a laugh , and each other's company . I still feel overwhelmed by what these great guys did for me with lovely presents and such a unique cake !!!!! I consider myself to be a very lucky chap to have these lovely friends in my life . The only drawback is the weekend went so so quickly !!! Before you know it your back home and into work !!!!! The remainder of the cake went to work with me . There were a few little comments but everyone knows about 'Darren's little interest' !!!! So the cake was quickly chomped down by the hungry midwives !!! Thank you all for such a memorable relaxing weekend and making my birthday such a special time Darren |

did it up but good! The iron sculpture is magnificent. It reminds me of a Thunderbird. |

I've found this film on bfi it's about Consett and how they made steel it's from 1967 not long after my parents arrived in Consett. It's a little long and in depth but quite fascinating!

.... and here is a new version on me, though Mike flagged it up a couple of weekends ago. Was this early production style? Was it an available option? Or is it another, though slightly less visually useful, prototype? Paul |

Yeah, but it has been given "Great British Baking Show" prime-time treatment. Perfect layers of cake bound together by something, covered by something else and then enrobed in what looks like marzipan. I'd love to see a step-by-step on this one. You folks must still get a serious education in home-ec class.
and BTW, I loved the picture of Lady Diana and Twiggy confabbing in front of the vintage Kenwood. Was that Rigg's flat? |

It was actually Mike did all the work here (I have zero artistic talent) but from memory it was first covered in a thin later of sieved apricot jam, then a thin layer of marzipan and finally a layer of (what we call) fondant icing - you can roll out fondant icing. Once the cake was assembled it was given a light spay of edible, gold spray to get the finish. I had never heard of that stuff but Mike came fully equipped (it was assembled at my house) for artistic magic

Jon
Unfortunately we wont be able to make it this time, however we shall be enjoying the company of other collectors in Malmesbury that same weekend thanks, once again, to Jack & Jon's kind hospitality. We are planning on another Halloween gathering this year - I am just about to send my Endora gown to the cleaners. You would be very welcome and the exchange rate is really working in your favour at the moment. Al |
