As you may have noticed from the previous thread, Richard brought down the AEG twintub as a restoration project. I've put the link in from when he first got it. It had tripped out the electrics due to a leak from the spinner. We had a look at it last weekend and discovered the bellows had split and that was as far as we got. Anyway, I had another look - here's the machine with the front panel off showing the direct drive motor on the spinner

We decided that the spin can had to come out to access this properly and in order to do this the centre post where the rinse water passes through. It has flat edges which indicates that it is screwed on

Try as I might, I couldn't find anything to get a good grip on this so out came the angle grinder ........ and an adjustable spanner was shortened - the theory behind that a few taps with a hammer would loosen it off. However no amount of tapping has so far worked so I'm a bit stumped.

I then turned my attention to the underside in the hope that there might be a coupling between the motor and spin shaft. I loosened the motor and discovered that not only had the seal split, but the can has a split in it too - there was quite a bit of loose corrosion in the outer can from the outset

Not a show stopper thanks to this stuff but unless I can get the spin can out I'm not sure how to get this sorted. Anyone had any experience of getting the tube out and the can out? Any other suggestions much appreciated.

Hi Steve

what about trying a tap (as in sink taps) spanner/wrench to use on the rinse tube, do you think the thread at the bottom of the rinse tube is sealed from the tube or is the tube just threaded, just wondering if dropping penetrating oil down the tube would do anything, but I can see how the spin drum is in the way of the repairs.

What sort of diameters are the hole in the outer tub and the seal around the shaft, just to look out for something that may do.

Aluminium mesh and Chemical Metal - the way some of my machines are, I too am going to have to become friends with these two items (under the watchful eyes of experts though).
So many weepy / leaky tubs :-(

Mathew - I did think of the spanner that Richard is suggesting but the nut diameter is 38mm and most of these don't open to that width. I've tried looking down the inside of the tube but there are cross bits in there so you can only see halfway down. If you feel the bottom of the tube there is a slight gap between it and the spin can base. I can give the penetrating oil a go. I was looking at some photos of other AEG twinnies without the tube and the design of the can looks the same and has a single central nut so it seems this has to be the way the drum is held in. I'm assuming there is some kind of screwed bush under the nut which the tube screws onto. I haven't checked the diameter of the bellows yet but will let you know. I'm hoping someone might have some AEG service info somewhere 🤞

Ian - I had thought the same thing. I should have checked which way the can span before I stripped it - schoolboy error on my part.

Paul - I've never used this stuff before so it will be a new experience and learning curve so I'm hoping I manage to get as far as to be able to give it a try.

Well we are gathered on another repair weekend to complete a few more repairs. The AEG lavalux is proving to have more than Advanced Engineering from Germany.... Does anyone know how to remove the spincan? Louis do you have any links to the lads on Das Waschmachine forum who might know? We have made a spanner adaptor to fit the ring nut, we need to know how this comes apart and then if the can lifts off the stem or is made to be unscrewed from the thread.... Any help would be gratefully received!!

Looking at the pictures, does that nut at the bottom actually hold the spin can in place, or does it just hold the rinse tube? The reason I'm wondering this are the six domes in the bottom of the can, does something screw into these from underneath, al la later Supertwin, perhaps accessible through the bottom of the outer can when that rubber bellows that's split is moved out of the way?

Das Waschmaschinenforum doesn't excist anymore. There is the other forum, but there's not much activity in that forum anymore. I have regular contact with one member of the first forum. I have sought contact with him. He doesn't speak english, so if he has some knowledge of the Lavalux, I will share that.

With a jammed, ruptured spin can and those buggered bellows, surely this machine is basically scrap? Strip it for usable parts and weigh the rest in.

Many thanks Louis for contacting your friends and searching out the info, if he has any more pages or written instructions that they can share that would be magic. We are trying to establish if the spin can is screwed onto the shaft or simply slotted onto a groove. That's the great thing about AutomaticWasher site if we need information for the hobby then all we need to do is ask and it appears !!

This AEG Lavalux twintub is rare in the UK especially this one with the Needle Spray Tube rinsing etc, we took a collective view that it is worth the time, effort and commitment to see if we can resurrect this fine machine !!

It would fantastic if this machine could be fully restored to working condition, they are great rare twinny. I had one many years ago which I collected from a couple in Bristol funny enough we held the same surname.
Unfortunately I got rid of mine as it was too far gone to do anything with but retain a few parts.

Can I echo Mike's thanks for providing the drawing. It is really helpful and hopefully will give some clues on how to dismantle it all. If there is any possibility of a better shot of the picture or a close up of the spin can connection that would be much appreciated as it is just a bit too blurry to be able to see clearly. Also if there is anything else in the manual that would be great too. I really want to get this machine restored if possible as its such a beast but will be great to use.

Did you get any use out of yours initially or was it gone from the start? Richard managed to do a bit of washing in it originally so hopefully it will wash again.

Morning Steve,

Unfortunately mine was to far gone, well that's what I thought back then and I wasn't over keen on the look of the machine, I thought it was to big and clumsy looking, with hindsight I was I had kept it as it was ok and just needed some cosmetic work. It worked fine but didn't use it, just stripped it down and kept some parts.
